I believe in socialism, but I don't believe that socialism means "gimme free stuff."
I believe that socialism means hard work. That everyone who can contribute, does contribute. That means, if you have debilitating PTSD, you will be given therapy for as long as it takes and we will find you a job you can do, but you will do it. If you have Aspergers, we will put your special interest to work and not expect you to be highly social, but you will learn not to be an ass and you will work. If you have classical profound autism and intellectual disability and all you can do is sort pencils for the school house, you will sort pencils.
You will work, I will work, and the mayor and the governor and the president and God himself will work right beside us.
And in exchange for that?? You will have leisure time. You will have a warm home and a warm bed. You will have healthy, nutritious food. You will have medical care. If you are as profoundly affected by CP as my cousin and all you can do is writhe in a wheelchair and grunt until someone guesses what you need, your needs will be met until you die a natural death in God's time. If your needs or abilities change, your work will change to meet them-- but you will work. In exchange for your work, you will always have enough. You will have companionship, and value, and enough.
But a big-screen TV, a sports car, the latest video game equipment, all the dope you can smoke, caviar and champagne, a diet of Cheetos and Pepsi... These things are not part of "enough." These things are called "luxury." Find a legitimate way to get it yourself, or learn to find joy without it.
