[quote = "LKL"]I said that guns are better tools for killing things than are knives, hammers, etc. If guns were not better tools for killing people in specific, the military would not spend so much money on them.
Depends on who’s using them and for what purpose. Shooting a gun is really not like playing COD and there is some skill involved. In some cases a hammer can be a more desirable killing weapon.
1. Quieter
2. Much cheaper
3. Easier to obtain
4. The satisfaction and sheer joy of personally and up close stoving someone’s skull in that just can’t be experienced by using any gun.
... which is why the military makes sure that soldiers have access to hammers everywhere they go, right? Again: guns are very good tools for killing things. Other tools might be used for killing as an accessory function, or might be more primitive killing tools, but guns are currently one of the most effective way for killing someone dead. I have personally seen multiple types of wounds in the ED, and bullet wounds are second only to explosives in the level of tissue damage caused by a deliberate weapon.

Yes, I get angry when people are deliberately obtuse and think that they're making a point. See above.

Most all of gun show sales are from FFL (Federal Firearms License) dealers and they go through ALL the steps for each sale. Trust me.
Most? Yes.

^depending on the study, 15-22% of sales don't use a background check.
http://csgv.org/issues/universal-background-checks/
^this one suggests 2/5 of sales use no check.

^this one says about 1/3 of sales have no check (34%), and includes some lovely sting videos at gun shows.

The ATF is not going to issue an FFL to an individual just so they can sell their granddaddy’s old Fox Sterlingworth shotgun for the money to buy a new TV. That’s pretty much what you are proposing.
No. I'm proposing that private transfers require a background check, not that anyone selling a gun has to register as a dealer. Private car transfers do not require private car sellers to call themselves auto dealers.

the fact that there have been all the guns sales there have been since your boy Barack took office and no subsequent rises in gun crime speak volumes.

Edit: another note on guns vs. knives.
The same day as Sandy Hook here in the US, a different madman armed with a cooking knife attacked a kindergarten in China and attacked the students there, slashing as many children as he could reach.
'Ah, see?' You say. 'Knives are just as bad as guns.'
But there is a catch, of course, or I wouldn't mention it:
None of the children in the Chinese attack died. Not a single one. They were horrifically injured, but don't you think a parent would rather have a scarred child than a dead one?

Also a person can get shot by a gun and survive. This is one of MANY survivor stories online. So what's your point with the knife and the children again?

I'm asking you since you brought it up. You brought up the topic so finish it.

Jesus christ on a toothpick. Are you all really that goddamn stupid? I'm talking about odds, and you keep on bringing up anecdotes and exceptions. The Chinese attack and the Sandy Hook attack illustrate the odds.
Guns and knives are 8% and 6% of weapons involved in assaults, but guns cause a disproportionate number of deaths:
https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/c ... ta-table-8
http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/wuvc01.pdf
Knives caused an even higher proportion of violent injuries treated in emergency rooms, suggesting a discrepancy in reporting that would skew the death rate even higher for guns:

So nobody gets to discuss anything unless they are the final expert?
could I not discuss the relative merits of steak vs. eggplant if I was not a trained chef or a professional food critic?
This is another example of someone pretending to be stupider than they probably really are. Would you really make that sort of demand IRL?

Look lady, don't call me stupid. This conversation between you and I is now OVER. Either debate like an adult or get the hell out of my face.

Pot. Kettle. Black.
edit: do you seriously not understand the problem with using ONE PERSONAL ANECDOTE to make a claim about the relative dangers of one weapon vs. another?

1. The USSC has interpreted it for us with the McDonald v. City of Chicago and District of Columbia v. Heller cases.
2. Do you realize what even a half serious threat of something like changing/removing the 2nd amendment would do in terms of a gun and ammo buying spree? Probably the rebirth of the militia movement, too.
3. Screwing with the constitution is a slippery slope that won’t stop where you want it to. I could write pages if I thought you were worth it.

I’ll go along with that as long as it doesn’t involve a “constitutional amendment” to the 1st amendment.

Yeah right, dealers regularly risk their license, business, and freedom to openly sell guns illegally at gun shows knowing that there are usually ATF agents moseying around looking for just that.

Justify it. You want the change then it’s on you to make the case for it.
On second thought don’t even bother. You seem to believe that our constitution should be changed just to suite you so I wouldn’t even bother to read any justification you could cook up. I’m sure words to this effect would be found in it somewhere:
“Think of the children!! ! Sob, sob, boo hoo hoo”.

Well then there you have it! Let’s nuke China.!
Call me an uncouth churl (I don't care) but that's about as much effort as I can justify with this neverending debate that will only continue for dozens of threads after this one dies.

Beats me. People whom I've pwn3d usually say that I am a troll, not that I'm not one.
Personally, I've never claimed to be one or denied being one.
Personally, I know of no other forums where the people are so obsessed with trolls.
