Is it WRONG to own guns, rifles, swords, knives, etc.?

It seems the issue is not whether people have a right to keep a firearm, but making sure that those who do are responsible enough to have it.

Bear in mind I live in a country where they banned knitting in a hospital waiting room as a potential health and safety risk. The odds of us ever being allowed guns are astronomically low, if our government wont trust us to KNIT.

Defense against the government has been proven to be a pointless reason several times now, so we are left with what? Personal security, legit purposes as described, and the fact its just a "right."

I'm fine with the idea of guns used for legit purposes as a tool, like hunting, dealing with livestock etc. I'm even vaguely OK with armed police to a degree, so long as they are well trained. I'm also fine with the idea of antiquarian gun collection as a hobby. (Your ww1 mausers, or a musket, that sort of thing.) But its surely indicative of a police force not doing its job if citizens feel they need to be armed for security. (I'm thinking average everyday urban folk who are never more than about 7 minutes from the nearest coppers, not isolated homesteads and farms.)

Its not really abot people having guns.. its about MORONS having them, and how to stop that.

I don't care about defense against the government. If the government goes that bad we'll do like Masada, but that won't be for a while. Snake, please, I understand your point and that someday there will be mass extermination of "politically incorrect" individuals and so forth, but I really do wish you'd quit bringing that point up. I have used assault rifles before, and I have never killed anyone or any animals either. Shooting is a fun pastime the tools of which can also be used for self defense. The fact that SOME people use them wrongly doesn't mean that all people do.

I'm a little intrigued why someone who is prevented from owning a firearm anyway, is so vocal about other people being permitted to own one. Is it an altruistic act, arguing for others who might own one? Or is it a response to being disallowed the option? Would you like to see legislation changed so that you CAN own one? Or do you wish the legislation to stay the same because to change it lessens the likelihood of you ever owning one?
Are you irate at the government who wont let you own one, hence your citing the "Overthrowing the government" reasoning?

No, it's that I do not wish to see my country get taken over and transformed into some prolatariate dictatorship of the ruling wealthy class, which is happening right now as we speak.
In all honesty, I could get a firearm illegally, off the street, but my intent would only be to use it to commit suicide when the day comes where our government exacts military operations to overtake the populace and civil war breaks out on the streets as a result. It could happen as early as 2012 or 2013 at this rate.

I personally see no need to stay and fight when the s**t hits the fan, I'd rather be dead than have to live that sort of life, living on the run amidst all the chaos and confusion. Although, I still hope some of my fellow Americans stay and fight and somehow manage to win back our rights and freedoms.
But honestly I've been too desensitized to the world, and I don't feel optimistic enough about our chances and our future.

I'm really trying to just live my life until that day as peaceful as I can.... I've became quite a recluse.

I disagree, until they can put away their guns I'm not in support of us putting away our guns. And I'm not in support of our government putting away IT'S guns until the rest of the world does likewise. But this will never happen, unfortunately.
Reality is ugly sometimes, I wish it weren't. There have been times where, in the search for knowledge and truth, I have grown sick with sadness and disappointment at the reality humans have made. But we made our bed and now we must lay in it.
