And now you're mixing Biblical Literalism with evolutionary history, which is just surreal.

You said that some Christians don't believe in Creationism. Please do not tell me they don't believe in Adam and Eve.

The original secret of the Bible was that Adam and Eve were apes. That makes everything work fine.

As far as I know, they don't believe in the literal story of Adam and Eve. Heck! the first woman being created literally from a man's rib is ridiculous.

Perhaps cloning would sound ridiculous, except using x chromosomes and removing the y chromosome?

What? Can you rephrase that?

God, of course, is inscrutable and his methods, not limited by reason or the dynamics of this universe, and He must remain ever mysterious. Why He could produce Adam out of mere thought but needed a rib to produce Eve must be noodled out of the obscure psychology of those ancient Hebrews who invented God. Why He had to cuckold poor Joseph to produce Christ is, again, a strange limitation of His infinite powers. Walt Disney produced Mickey Mouse, like God producing Adam, with no need for body parts. There is not yet a church of Mickey Mouse, but considering the average intellects that produced both Christ and God we probably have not long to see it realized.

I think the idea that woman is created from man's rib is great. While implying that man is first in the household regarding spiritual matters, it also shows that the woman has an equal share in family life. Man and woman are to progress through life side-by-side, neither being more "in charge" of the other.

The reason is more fundamental than household arrangements. The components made from Adam's rib are essential for the basic processes of life and are known as ribosomes.

You're right it doesn't, that's why its faith. Nobody believes in God because they mixed some chemicals and studied the results, if so, they are crazy. I have no clue why I believe in God, or why some people believe in creationism, but they do. As long as they keep it out of the science class, it isn't a problem.

Life and action are concerned with more than what goes on in a science class. The whole concept of how to deal with the forces of nature that easily maim and kill millions of people depends on a pragmatic understanding of their power and how they may be confronted. It is a life and death matter.

It just has been a notion of mine that God used the genetic material from Adam's cells in the removed rib. Also, the ribs can grow back, they are the only bone in a human body which can.

Yes, I did misinterpret AG's answer, but it wasn't deliberate.

Didn't think it was. I guessed you were stuck on one or two ideas and had so much trouble getting off them that you needed a whack with a metaphorical brick to get your attention.

AngelRho wrote:
So what DO you think? You said that you "infer the existence" from regularity in your observations. With gravity, even though we can't "see" it, we do have the evidence from its effects on objects. Ergo, according to AG, greenblue, and Binary, we may believe that there is such a force as gravity, even if we are unclear as to EXACTLY what it is. It's like arguing that the sun does not exist. I can point to evidence that "proves" the sun exists just by stepping out on a clear day.

I don't think there is much difference. If you look into modern theories of perception you'll find they are theories of statistical inference. All we ever know about the universe is based on statistical inference. The only difference between gravity and seeing and feeling sunlight is that with gravity you (or the scientists you rely on) do the job deliberately and consciously, and when you think you directly perceive the sun, your brain does the statistical inference for you without you ever noticing. The basis for the maths is the same.

That creates a little problem if you try to deny evidence for evolution because you object to conclusions based on statistical inference. If you want to be consistent you have to deny all knowledge of the universe and all you can do is mess about with maths and logic in solipsistic isolation. You'd even have to deny the existence of the Bible.

AngelRho wrote:
For you, is evidence required for belief? Or, more to the point, should something be ignored if there is no evidence for it?

If you are willing to abandon your previous preoccupation with physical evidence and the division between evidence and reasoning (or logic, as you called it) in favour of a broader meaning of evidence, and if you are willing to treat belief or lack of belief as a shorthand for a probability estimate, then yes.

Take an example much overused in creationist arguments, a protein with 100 amino acids. The number of possible sequences is larger than the estimated number of elementary particles in the universe. Creationists like to argue that makes the evolution of a protein with that many amino acids so improbable that we may treat it as impossible for all practical purposes. The fallacy is to assume that each amino acid is the result of independent random events. But let's say I saw you pick 100 amino acids randomly, independently, with replacement, to generate that sequence. Then you ask me "does this protein exist anywhere in the universe?" I say probably not. If you ask me whether a teapot orbits Mars this minute, you get the same answer. Not because either event is impossible, only because from what I know about how you generated the sequence and from what I know about teapots and what sort of objects are commonly in orbit around planets, I would say they are both improbable enough that I would ask for evidence before I believe them.

AngelRho wrote:
Or, perhaps, do you think that what these three have plainly said is absurd?

My position is probably similar to theirs. It is very different from what you were going on about earlier in the thread. You claimed it was absurd to demand physical evidence before believing something existed because the people who demand that have no physical evidence for the logic they rely on. The people who ask for evidence, in the broad sense, do not accept your division. Data can only be evidence if they are evidence for or against some hypothesis or theory, That is only possible if you have some basis for reasoning. The concept of evidence already depends on accepting the existence of the concepts you need to engage in reasoning. The people you attacked don't make the division you attacked as being absurd.

It was a rhetorical device to assert the inferiority of women. A mistake one can make is to take the Bible (or any Holy Book) seriously or literally. They are fairy tales or stories with a point or "moral".

One can ask by does the Bible start out with a creation story. According the R. Schlomo Yitzchak (the Rashi) the creation story was placed in the Book of Genesis to assert that

1. God made the world
2. God owns the world
3. And he can give pieces of the world to whomsoever He pleases.
4. Which established the claim of the people of Israel on the Holy Land. God gave it to the sons of Jacob, therefore it is theirs.

That feels me so great about being a Christian woman. Christian men are both leaders of the family and protective over their wife. It can't be better than that.

This blog claims that it wasn't literally a rib but it was a DNA structure that God took from Adam to create Eve. Besides that, I presume that few creationists believe that the fact that lower ribs are able to grow back falsifies evolution, which both explanations are ad hoc.

Oh, wow, amazing. Man, so many people are able to come up with so many ideas on how God did things. And of course, the Bible is also very obvious to understand too, despite how abstract all of these reasonings end up being.

As good ol' fnord would put it: Evidence Please?

Anyway, one issue is that practically, as ruvein said, an example of the inferiority of women in that society, God created woman to serve man and not to be an equal, the purpose of the existence of Eve was to be Adam's companion, her creation was for his sake. Genesis 2:18 Instead of creating her directly from sand as it was with Adam. BTW first man created from sand seems even more ridiculous.
