The fact that all 8min and 46 second seconds were caught on camera with Chauvin arrogantly kneeling on George Floyd's neck while Floyd was audibly struggling to breath and knowing he was being filmed might have been the trigger rather than a slow news day or COVID boredom
There have been of multitudes of videos of cops killing black people including a number of “I can’t breath” videos. While these have often caused protests and an occasional riot there has been no reaction as remotely as widespread, not even in the 60s. More than 30 states had to call out the National Guard and more then 200 cities imposed curfews. Beyond the riots there were peaceful protests everyday for weeks and protests in practically every locale including cop towns, lily white places, suburbs, rural areas, redneck towns.
