Why is Sarah Palin so disliked?
She seems to embody a slew of negative stereotypes... The hick, the religious fanatic, the not-too bright woman, the lightweight politician... she definitely is someone who is an easy target for urban sophisticates, represents what they don't approve of.
I think that her association with some of these stereotypes is partly behind her popularity with many people, and that she is not liked by these sophisticates adds to that...
Firstly, I am not a Republican/conservative & Sarah is not one I would ever vote for. Please notice, Lab Pet IS an Alaskan (& proud)! !! I live in the Interior but I'm actually from the Mat-Su Valley - Sarah's town. So, I've actually seen Sarah in small-town Wasilla (that's Mat-Su Valley).
In actuality, many Alaskans love Sarah - they find her very 'homey' since Alaskans distinctly (& proudly) consider ourselves distanced from the 'lower 48,' that is, the US.
The inside part about Sarah: In the Mat-Su church-goers are the norm.....(I am not but might be the exception; most I know there are church affiliated). Sarah does attend a peculiar variety of Mat-Su church & evangelical doesn't just describe their belief system - to me they can be a bit scary. Sarah and her church affiliates truly do believe G_d speaks to them each directly. Whilst I do not have any problems with this, per se, their ways wouldn't be congruent with being in pollitical office, as you might imagine.
Also, her family choices (again, church-dictated) are not what you might expect for one holding high political office. Where I'm from her way, even the choice of her kid's names, isn't too unusual.
Again, I'm liberal BUT I grew up hunting for putting meat on the table. So please understand/respect our way about these matters; the Alaskan ways is very beautiful and we are truly the last frontier. I do like that Sarah is outdoorsy and her family (ie: husband Todd) are snowmachiners! Todd is an avid outdoorsman; this is good and commands respect in AK. I do hate when 'outsiders' tease ANY Alaskan, including Sarah, about her hunting lifestyle. This is our way and we're not out to please others. Have lived without electricity/running water and many choose this way - we're proud of our ways.
But her politics? Ummm....scary. Her first promise is to her church, not her office. Then her family, not her politics. Another reason I am skeptical of her: She actually fired a great police chief in Alaska, Walt Monegan, for not abiding by her request that he fire her brother-in-law (which was due strictly to her own personal agenda). Doesn't bode well for one in office.
She's been slammed for her way of speaking but, again, this partly her regional accent. There is an Alaskan accent! Nothing at all bad about Alaskan accent; in fact, we have a very euphonious way of speaking with enunciating words. Many Alaskans do love Sarah. To note: Sarah is not dumb and not uneducated; that's a misnomer! In fact, amongst polilticians (not my favorite group of people, for sure!) Sarah is educated on par with them. She's certainly not dumb but she would not have that US slick flair - so? When I see some female politicians (from the States) they look so....fakey! In Alaska Hilary Clinton, for instance, would really NOT blend. Regardless of political affiliation.
I'm from where women (yes, including Lab Pet) wear long dresses with long hair, braids, shawls, and more 'rustic' style. But Lab Pet, and other Alaskan women, are pretty. One from the States who came here said the first thing that struck her was watching women in dresses and shoe-pacs (our winter boots, felt-lined) pumping their gasoline and doing routine mechanics in brutal cold, then hitching themselves back up into high trucks. Well, yes. We do. When I visited the States/Lower 48 last fall MANY thought I was not American. In some ways I am proud of this distinction - I'm an Alaskan first.
There's a popular bumper sticker here, "Alaska: Coolest state. Hottest governor."
Don't know why Sarah resigned her office! Again, she claims G_d told her to......not good for one who strives for higher political office. I hope that clarified, from an Alaskan perspective.

You got that right! The sight of Sarah of the Frozen North pulling drawing a magnum from the holster strapped to her long creamy white thigh gave some of these Republic White Guys (most of who are cover-boys for Erectile Dysfunction Monthly) the first wood they had for twenty years. Woo Hoo!

Alaska is a lot like another country - and Palin dropped into Washington from this other country. This is a sort of place featuring the sorts of out-doorsy pursuits and "homeiness" that many heartland-type Republicans like. She was chosen in a way as a result of the Democratic primaries where Hillary Clinton became the candidate of Appalachia and Obama was branded as an elitist who could not win over such people.. The urban sophisticates see her as the kind of leader to avoid completely... it ties in with Bush in a way who again appealed to the rural heartland people and rallied them, saying that their opponents looked down on them and even if he was running the economy into the ground, he was one of them and was keeping an enemy out of the White House.
me thinks she is unqualiefied to hold a national office. She even came out and said she couldn't hack governing a place where there is little cash flow problem for the budget and relative few hotbed issues. She doesn't seem to care that she sounds like an idoit (Refering to her knowledge, not dialect), take her "experiance" on foriegn policies, she said she would be great because she can see Russia from Alaska! And she is proud of that fact! If she is unwilling to learn how the goverment works and like our last prez, prefers faith to facts, she will never hold office.

Right on the money, the male/female ratio in alaska is high, women in that state have more clout than in any other. Lisa Murkowski has a political office there, she literally didn't do anything but step in for her dad to get this position, voters there chose her over a vietnam war vet with george bush connections (he ran as a democrat, she ran as a republican). Not to say that voters don't pick a political party, but the gender rules in alaska are just different, being a woman helps your political career. I don't care what you guys say about Palin though, if she ever has an opening for young male assistant with no on the job experience, I'll buy my own ticket to alaska and I won't mention that she resigned as governor
Was watching 'Confessions of a Shopaholic' last night, and when Isla Fisher goes in for an interview, she was classically Palinesque ... she was totally unprepared for the job she was seeking, and when she got a question she knew nothing about, she would restate the question, mix in some platitudes, and try to ramble that into an answer.
And shes hot.

I think a lot of it probably has to do with the left completely controlling nearly all of the media and thus a good portion of America's opinion. The reason it has traction I think is just the way she talks(and the lack of intelligence regarded with it) and her strong religious views just make people uncomfortable especially coming off the presidency of George W. The fact she is woman and not completely unfortunate looking probably doesn't help the obsession with her either. I wouldn't vote for Palin personally since I don't feel she would be the most qualified candidate and I'm not a social conservative but most of the criticism about her has nothing to do with politics. I don't care about her knocked up daughter or her boyfriend, her own newborn child, or how "folksy" she is. Just like when they obsess about when some politician has an affair, I just don't care. As long as they're not breaking the law and it doesn't effect how they do their job, it is irrelevant but I guess my opinion on that is the minority amongst the American public.
I think she does deserve criticism for leaving office early. I don't know what she's planning but it was horrendously stupid and arrogant if she's planning to launch a campaign for president. Even if she isn't and she quit because she can't "take the heat" it sends a terrible message that you can force somebody out of office like that.

I don't like her because I am disgusted by her views, she is a transparent phony politician, and because she is the equivalent of an Uncle Tom for women.
This "unlikable" women was elected governor of Alaska. She was well enough liked in Alaska.

Eh, I didn't qualify myself. Add an IMO in there somewhere.
There are plenty of people that like things that I find deplorable and plenty of things I like that others find deplorable.
