Just because something must be done, doesn't mean any old thing should be done. That's the main beef about the current healthcare bill. 80% of Americans polled are at least satisfied with their current healhcare arrangements, yet congress and the admin want to change the system for all 100% of Americans, not just the lower 20%. whether they want the change or not. That's what the healthcare debate is about, not the Presidential scrotum.

And in 10 years 30% of Americans will be senior citizens and no longer income earners. Maybe they will still be satisfied with their health care, but the fact is they are going to have age related health problems, and when they do, the insurance companies are going to take it out on the working adults. Rates will sky rocket.

So its damned if you do, damned if you dont.

As I pointed out, about 45,000 Americans die each year from treatable causes because of inadequate health care. This is a very strange view of patient satisfaction.

Well you have to admit a large component of American politics stems from that era. It has ebbed a little, but not nearly enough.

50s: Plastic hair, Jell-O™ parties, suburban Americana, duck and cover, Elvis, perfection, patriotism™ and paranoia.

I’ve seen many pickets and signs. I’m no fan of Bush or Blair but there were some dumb signs made of those two. However, I am simply astounded at the number of ironic signs in these teabag protests. You couldn’t make it up.

I agree...but at least they call for mistakes that we haven't already made as a country....just mistakes that others have made. This current incarnation is calling for us to make the same mistakes we've already made a la McCarthyism.

And yes, it very much established our identity because we made our identity back then "not the USSR". We can't base our identity anymore on not being another country...that's Canada's bag, anyways.

A fair qeestion. As an Aspie, I have my obsessions. The US is one, particularly the politics. When Jay Leno used to do Jay-Walking to show how little ordinary folk knew about their own country, I generally did a lot better than the people he was questioning. Healthcare wouldn't be my argument of choice in such a subject field, but it is one of the current hot-button issues.

Also, as a rather poor guy living in a country where I have to rely on the socialised half of the medical sector, I can see the faults of public sector health provision. To have equality in access to a poor system isn't a noble goal, IMO.

Changing to an overcrowded public system where even more people die waiting in hospital queues is hardly a good option. "We had to destroy the system to save it" isn't a wise course of action, IMO.
