If they keep the distance set by the local authorities there such assaults upon the WBC folk would be illegal and actionable. One of the endearing qualities of freedom of expression is the right to be unpleasant within limits. Pleasant Speech and Expression does not require protection. It is unpleasant or annoying speech or expression that must be protected if we are to be free. The only kind of speech that can be prevented or receive legal action is fomenting a riot or a panic or gathering up a lynch mob. That is strictly a no no and is not protected by the First Amendment. Also disturbing people who are trying to get some sleep is actionable. It is called disturbing the peace. The first move is to see if there is a legal remedy either by injunction or by tort. Failing that resorting to force is possible but that is a knife that has two edges. Whatever ye do unto others can be done unto you.

There is no legal duty to be polite and pleasant although it is graceful to be so.

I'm just glad WBC is no threat. They will never get what they want. They demand the impossible.
To me WBC are just clowns. Laugh at them.

Interesting analysis. however, WBC does not discriminate against women, peoples of colour or other groups officially.

The WBC has chosen two groups that people have traditionally been ambivalent about: LGBTs and Soldiers. And anyone can say what they want about these groups because they are seen as optional, in that a person can choose :?: to be LGBT or a soldier  There has also been much antiwar and antiGay demonstrations. Do not forget antiabortion, as well.

Not sure if they would protest against the KKK. They would find something against the African Americans, in order to justify the KKK and their cross burning (or whatever they do nowadays to harass others.)

I doubt, however, that the WBC would support Martin Luther King followers or a group of Catholic nuns who are against abortion. And the anti war protester types of the 60s would be alien to the likes of fred phelps.

I think WP knows already what I think of f*** phelps. It is unprintable. :P

the WBC's antiwar protests are different from those of the 1960's.

too bad we cannot drill some respect into Phelp's by sticking him on the front lines.
