My sweet Satan! I seriously find Luciferian beliefs quite intriguing. It's their belief that god is oppressive and that Lucifer stood up for our rights or some s**t.

Pilate is pretty cool too I mean he tried to convince the crowd that Jesus had commited no crime and didn't deserve sentencing. He just didn't have the authority to do any more for him. Even Peter denied connection to Jesus even after cutting off a soldier's ear to protect Jesus. At least Pontius Pilate despite the possibility of losing his influence in the the Roman empire or his live and what not stood up for what he believed in.

And just think about where Christianity would be if Jesus hadn't been crucified. Pilate was one of the basic founders of Christianity.

Repellant if that's all you care to focus on. More often than not, the Bible teaches us to honor our parents, be respectful of authority, to not "stir up" our children "to anger," and so on. The command that husbands love their wives just as Christ loved the church is such that a husband be willing to die if it means saving the life of his wife. Or this one: A man has no greater love than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. Would we not all agree that those kinds of values are more noble than purely self-seeking motives?

You can't have it both ways unless you're schizophrenic.

If you don't kill the messenger the message will never catch on. Yay for martyrdom!

Or if you understand what those things mean and the context in which those things were said. You seem all to willing to ignore that.

Strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter. That took on a whole new meaning after the earliest recorded Christian persecution and actually had the exact opposite effect than what the political and religious leaders of the day had in mind.

Incidentally, it's been my personal mission to actually read the Bible from cover to cover. Never thought I'd finish the OT, but I made it and am now in Acts.

Speaking of martyrdom and favorite figures, there's always Stephen. Over the last few years, I've had plenty to be bitter and resentful about, and you have THIS guy who can beg God to forgive people while they're killing him. Now THAT is strength of character, and I'm not really so sure I'd have had the same attitude.

Jesus did the same, "forgive them father for they know not what they do". Though I really don't understand why he'd say that. The wage of sin is death and thou shalt not kill is one of the ten commandments which I'm sure the jews knew but were too hypocritical to follow.

Was it Lot that God and Satan had the squabble over? Where god invited Satan to make him miserable to prove his loyalty by making him suffer in an attempt to turn him? Freaking ret*d I tell you! What kind of god invites punishment for his loyal servant and lets Satan go as far as to kill the dude's whole family?

I have read the bible cover to cover countless times. In one summer I read 27K pages of books out of the church library for the summer reading program. I won by a long shot and that included several childrens bibles. This was when I was 7-8 years old. In middle school I know for sure I read a full adult bible multiple times. That bible is now held together with duct tape, every verse I liked in the new testament is highlighted for easy access. My mom freely admits that I know the bible better than her and most of the church we went to

That was Job. And the incident, if accepted as a demonstration of character, makes both Satan and God vicious sons-of-bitches and Job an idiot with no backbone.

I knew it was a three letter name at least lol. I can't believe how some people draw inspiration from it. Just thinking about it reminds me of the original Toy Story "YOU ARE A CHILD'S PLAY THING!" Mean kid on an ant hill 'nuff said.

Haha... this thread like all the ones with a religious bent has been well and truly hijacked.

Anyone want to return to topic? Regardless of whether you believe the Bible is a work of fiction or not (the OP never made a statement as to it's authenticity one way or the other) who has favourite characters? Treat it as fiction if you like, and answer the question as you would "anyone have a favourite character in Shakespeare?"

I'm going to add Ruth to my list of favourite characters. She's a great role model... generous and loving to her mother in law (how hard can that be!) hard working, and finally feisty and forward enough to nab her man. She must have been one sexy lady.

If You'd read it all the way to the end, where Elihu, and then God, start talking, you might see it differently.

though I doubt it.
