I am a negotiator in the Treaties and Aboriginal Government Sector of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada.

Since our sector is responsible for the management of the Crown's obligations under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 it's a pretty sure bet that my work could not readily be done in the private sector.

Quote:
No doubt there are some people in government who know what they are doing. But they are in the minority.

One of the most technically advanced agencies of the U.S government is NASA. NASA is ill managed from top to bottom. And their management lies to the astronauts about the risks. That is about what you can expect from the U..S. government. Lies and mismanagement.

Perhaps it is marginally better at the state level.

I have no experience in the U.S. Government, of course. But my experience in the Canadian public service suggests to me that we are highly skilled, conscientiously professional, and relatively free from corruption. We are not immune, of course. And there are bad apples in every barrel. But on the whole I think we do a good job of living up to the values and ethics of the public service.

Perhaps you are ill served by your public servants. But when I was in the Foreign Service, my experience was that American public servants were invariably knowledgable and skilled. Perhaps State gets all the good people. But I suspect that you are indulging in a bit of hyperbole.

if this is true, its dissapointing. I always thought Canadians were more progressive and forward thinking than this.

It's not. I resurrected this old (2010) thread just to show how wrong it was. This thread was written just when the Tea Partisans won the US House and Rob Ford won the mayoralty of Toronto. Rob Ford won by playing off of regional tensions between suburban Toronto (where he won) and downtown Toronto - frequently attacking bicyclists.

Two years later he already ruined his chances. That was before a Conservative appointed Judge ordered him to leave office within 14 days for breaking conflict of interest laws.

Clearly, the rightwing's 2010 victories lack staying power.

The Right wing knows that their victories lack staying power in terms of votes but as for results, it unfortunately has a lot of staying power. After 2010, Republicans gerrymandered like mad and as a result in 2012, the Democrats won more votes than Republicans in House races but the gerrymandering gave the Republicans the majority.

I can tell you that it's hit or miss with the quality and integrity of both government and contractor employees.
Some are very conscientious and honest while others are criminally complacent. Most are somewhere just below middle so on average you have mediocracy at best.
I could write volumes on the corruption, deception, waste of resources, and fraud I've seen go down.
And, no, it won't get fixed. It won't allow itself to be fixed so the only thing left is to control its growth.
So the question is how much of your life do you really want to have run by mediocre bureaucrats?

Up until 1968 I to worked for firms contracting with governments (federal and state). I saw so much crap that it sickened me, so I vowed right then and their never to work for a firm that does business with the United States. From then on I worked as a contractor for purely private firms that did not do government contract work. I earned a good living and I was finally quit of government work. I worked for over 35 years without taking a cent by way of a government contract. I rendered myself squeaky clean.

I know exactly what you mean the people who run the government are the most ignorant inept and wasteful people I have ever dealt with which is why government should have a major down size. All they know how to do is cause problems where there aren't any and waste time and money but oh no liberals what a giant mage government that is what will save us

It's a safe bet that it's gotten a lot worse since 1968.

Says the employee of a government contractor.

Getting into the US foreign service is highly competitive. First, they have written exams, taken by people across the country. The top performers in the written exams are invited to participate in day-long oral exams/assessments. The few who do well in these may get into the foreign service, provided they pass extensive background checks. So, you have to be a really smart goody-goody to get into our foreign service.

The regular civil service is considerably less selective.

The federal government is relying less-and-less on civil servants, and more-and-more on contractors, who will hire any bonehead that will accept low pay and no benefits.

I do think the analogy is appropriate because it's not as simple as burning a draft card and not serving. The act of not serving puts you personally at risk of incarceration, or you become a fugitive and run. Either way, there is a personal sacrifice that was made on the left that remains unmatched by the right. The Tea Party has no courage behind their convictions and by their unwillingness to be out of some cash, has again illustrated that they are driven solely by greed.

In other words, you think the Tea Party folk should BOTH be taxed AND not make use of the services they were forced to pay for. It ain't going to happen.

ruveyn

Well, your hero, Mitt Romney, refused Medicare when he turned 65. At least he isn't a complete hypocrite, and has some convictions.

Why don't you guys all emulate him? You're going to have a very hard time convincing normal people that Medicare is a bad deal, if people on your side keep signing up for it.

And, just because you don't make use of a public service doesn't mean that you should be absolved of paying taxes for it. You are never going to get a ride in a space ship. Does that mean that you shouldn't have to pay for NASA? You will probably never take a trip to Iraq to see and enjoy any of our brilliant reconstruction projects. Does that mean that you shouldn't have to pay for them? Hopefully, you will never get to see the inside of a prison. Does that mean that you shouldn't pay for prisons?

First of all, since when has Canada been socialist? Second, running on a fiscally conservative platform isn't the same as being a full-blown Tea Partier. Part of being a Tea Partier is a cultural experience: a firm belief in their interpretation of the "wisdom of the Founders," a "strict" interpretation of the Constitution, a belief in American exceptionalism, liking to listen to songs like, "I'm proud to be an American!", etc. Another key component of it is the social conservatism: wariness of Muslims, opposition to gay rights, etc.

So let me get this straight, libertarians != Tea Partiers ! mind blown XD .

As I said, the state was shrunk considerably in the '90s, the unemployment insurance system was poked full of holes, all this done because right wing leaders decided to strangle the economy in the late '80s and cause massive unemployment and the resulting deficit (unemployment and high interest rates balloon the deficit) was used to claim that the social programmes were "unsustainable" and they were subject to assault through the 1990s.

A self fulfilling prophecy?

That is somewhat like burning a house down to prove that it is not fireproof.

I would equate it to the demand for reductions in social programs to somehow improve the economy.
