religion and "mental illness"
It's a simple question. Do you believe in such things as emotions or morals? Oh, but you're afraid I might try some trick, or try to "convert" you. Nah, it's no trick. I can't dazzle you with my excellent, God-given, superhuman hypnotic abilities just because you answer a question about emotions and morals! lol
Seriously, answer the question.
If that makes you uncomfortable, let me ask you a different question: Do believe in abstract concepts such as "numbers," "mathematical formulas," and that kind of thing?
it's a trick question: angelrho doesn't accept emotions as the result of chemical reactions, but rather he believes the chemical reactions are a byproduct of (magical) emotions.
morals are as real as the number 5. i don't understand how the use of morals, any more than the use of the number 5, leads to "magic." try harder.

It has nothing to do with "magic." Richardbenson wrote that believing in things you can't [perceive] means you are mentally ill or some such.
No, I don't accept emotions as the RESULT of chemical reactions, but that's really irrelevant here.
Take your response, waltur. You believe morals are real. You believe the number 5 is real. If I understand richardbenson correctly, there must be some way to "perceive" morals or emotions (and so on) in some kind of physical way. Morals cannot be perceived or quantified in empirical terms, which is what I think richardbenson is talking about. If I'm wrong, you need to show me what a gram of morality looks like, or perhaps the chemical makeup of "emotion." I don't mean merely dumping a mixture of the same chemicals in the brain that transmit neural signals. I mean right here, right now, THIS is "emotion." The plain fact is you can't show it to exist.
The number 5 is an abstract concept. We use it to describe various things, such as cardinality (itself also abstract) or quantity (how many fingers I have on my hands). The NUMERAL 5 exists as a symbolic representation of the number, but we don't have "5" all by itself. It doesn't exist.
What I'm saying, waltur, is according to richardbenson, you have a mental illness!! ! Now, don't blame me or some "magic" for you being mentally ill. You need to talk to richardbenson about that, because he's the one calling you (and me, for that matter) mentally ill.

bolded: the answer.
the number 5 is shorthand for an abstract concept. ***** how many asterisks is that? oh, right... we invented a shortcut to answer that question. without such a shortcut, enumeration is quite difficult -or at least, the communication of such enumeration. it's a concept we invented to explain something. you know, like the gods.
as to the chemical makeup of emotion (and everything else that is part of your perception of your "self"), i recommend trying a little harder before giving up on finding answers. one of my favorite places to find information on how the brain works is neuroscience (scicurious does a great job explaining a lot of the harder concepts to anyone willing to look up words they don't understand http://scientopia.org/blogs/scicurious/science-101/) of course, you could just ask your shaman/prophet/priest/whoeveritisyouliketohear"goddidit"from.
morals, being relative, work quite like mathematics, in a complicated way that involves taking into account other persons and their emotional and physical well being. unfortunately, a lot of people seem to think "morals" are god-given (magic) and have f*** all to do with actually being decent to each other.
i don't see how numbers or comparisons = belief in magic. i sincerely doubt richardbenson believes as you imply.

Uhh, yes I believe in emotions. Morals on the other hand are subjective for everyone, and i dont need religion to be a good person, or do what is right

But you can't SEE emotions (in a physical sense). You "feel" emotions. If we're talking about empirical proof for emotions, then we're talking about something for which "feelings" are invalid. You say morals are subjective--debatable, but not the point--but you nevertheless believe in "morals" or "morality." No matter whether morality is "objective" or "subjective," it is still something that you claim exists but that you cannot, as you put it, "see."
According to you, people who believe in something they cannot see are mentally ill (you said "should be considered mentally ill"). Let's see if I have this correct:
1. Richardbenson believes that people who believe in things they cannot see are mentally ill.
2. Emotions and morality cannot be seen.
3. Richardbenson believes in emotions and morality.
4. Therefore, Richardbenson believes that he (richardbenson) is mentally ill.
Let me ask you this: Do you believe that you are mentally ill?

Emotions and morality can be seen. When someone crys thats an emotion, you can see it
When someone kills another person because of jihad thats thier own truth about what is moral
you can see it
So you were saying?
God cannot be seen. but yet people pray to him, to me thats a form of mental illness

Crying is not an emotion. Crying is a physical response to an emotion, but it is not "emotion." When someone cries, you might assume that they are sad, but any range of intense emotion might trigger crying. Some people, when they have experienced something so unspeakably devastating, will break out into hysterical fits of laughter until they can fully appreciate what has happened. IDK, call it "cognitive dissonance" if you want. But what you see is not emotion. What you see is laughing or crying. "Crying" is not an emotion. "Anger" IS an emotion. "Joy" is an emotion. There is any range of responses to emotions. You see the response, but not the emotion itself.
Like I said, I'm not going to get into what is/is-not moral. "Killing someone" is not a moral. It's an action which may or may not be morally justified, but it's still only an action. You can't "see" the morality that drives or inspires the action.
Nice try, but you have not "shown" me that emotions and morality are real in that sense.
I'll also avoid the emotion-before-neuron route that I'd normally take. Whether emotions trigger neural impulses or neural impulses are the cause of emotions, it is still demonstrable that emotions and nerve impulses are not one and the same. A nerve impulse is a nerve impulse, might show up on brain imaging, but it isn't something that we can observe in brain tissue in order to effect a sympathetic response. I can't look at a brain scan and "feel" what that person is feeling, nor would that person really agree that what they're feeling is really most accurately represented in a brain image. A brain image is a brain image. An emotion is an emotion. They are not the same.
So can you demonstrate that emotion is something you can directly see? You showed me a way that an emotion might manifest itself indirectly, but those manifestations might have other root causes. What if someone is crying because they are having some sort of seizure, no emotions involved? What if someone just has bad allergies resulting in watery eyes? I'm not worried about crying. I'm worried about "emotions." Can you trap "ambivalence" in a jar and tell me what color it is? If I had to guess, I'd say it was actually two colors--purple on one side and violet on the other, split exactly down the middle between the two. But again, I don't "know" that because I've never "seen" ambivalence. However, I've felt it countless times.
Yet you believe in emotions and morality.
So answer this question: Are you mentally ill?

Ok, well I can see this is going nowhere. The fact of the matter is god didnt write the bible
Some counsel put it together, carefully. I dont think people who see "emotions" or "moraility" as mentally ill because IMO you can see them, in action.
When you pray what exactly are you doing? talking to an invisible guy. to me, thats mental illness. and if that wasnt bad enough you base your morality on this guy

And the first 4 books of the new testament cant even be traced to an origional source.
A hypothetical document called the "Q" document suposidly exists, but more than likely doesnt. My memorys a little off but 2 or three of them seem to be copied from one of the first 4 gospels. I'm a skeptic, the testimony of someone really doesnt hold up all that much weight with me because you dont know for an absolute fact thats how it went down.
If anything, i think christianity is like any other religion. they want to snuff out the compatition and replace it with something new (wich is clearly what they tried and did to do to the pagans)
Edit: also when you have a scripture that says: We walk by faith not by sight, that throws up red flags eveywhere for me, because well I dont know about you but i like to know whats going on

But God did inspire men to write His words down. People in business and law do dictation all the time, passing that along to their assistants via voice recording and/or Dragonspeech to write down. Those words are as good as the words that were originally spoken.
Are you referring to the church councils? The OT was already in a compiled format and the NT books were already widely distributed individually by the 2nd century. These books were accepted as inspired scripture long before the councils. All the councils did was formally establish that the books already in use were THE accepted, divinely inspired scripture and establish a precedent as the message spread throughout the world. The basis for developing doctrine is not a good thing to disagree on, and heresy abounded even before the end of the 1st century.
So you don't see yourself as mentally ill for believing in invisible things (emotions, morals, etc.). Ok, good.
1. Richardbenson believes that people who believe in things they can't see are mentally ill.
2. Emotions and morals are things that cannot be seen
3. Richardbenson believes in emotions and morals
4. Richardbenson is NOT mentally ill.
5. Therefore, #1 is false.
It's not mental illness at all. Look at your own logic. #4 contradicts #1. You don't really believe that, or you are inconsistent if you do. I'm picking on emotions and moral values because, to me, that's just what immediately comes to mind. What about thoughts? Thoughts are invisible. You have thoughts, don't you? Lots of things are invisible, yet we believe them. It's not insanity to do so.

Show some proof that god inspired men to write the bible. I guess also, that before the flood rainbows didnt exist because god set it as a covenant to never kill anyone again with water?
Well, i have to say that if there was water vapor in the air and a little bit of sunlight there was always a rainbow. It had nothing to do with god, and why would he need to see something like that everytime it rained? I thought he was god and knew everything?
You can see emotions and morals. so i really dont know why you keep saying I cant see them
because i can.
The counsel put those books in the cannon because they all jived with each other. the apocriphal books had one too many dragons in them, and it was almost completely unbelievable thats why those current books are in there. God didnt inspire anything, mans imagination did
Also if the bible was written by god, or even "divinely inspired" by him there wouldnt be 1 contradiction in there. But if you google bible contradictions it looks like there are hundreds
wich would say to me that some perfect diety didnt inspire it because men wrote it

believing in something you cant see? at least schizophrenics have brain mapping imagies to back up why they are like that (through no fault of there own)
You are correct. I believe in something I cannot see. According to you, that means I should be considered to have a mental illness. Right?
Let me ask you another question: Do you believe in emotions? What about morality? Do you believe in those things?
Just because one cannot see something, does not mean it is not real. Further, there have been sightings of Angels.

Easy. I'm finishing up reading Exodus right now. Many passages begin with something like "And the Lord said to Moses, 'Say to the Israelites..'" When Moses writes down what the Lord told Him, it is inspired. Any time a prophet says something like "these are the words of the Lord," he is reminding the person to whom he is sent that what he says is not something he just made up or came up with, but that the words come from God. Would you like for me to cite specific passages? The OT is riddled with them.
The Bible never says that rainbows didn't exist prior to the covenant with Noah.
God knows everything, but Noah DIDN'T know everything, nor did his family. God merely pointed out the rainbow and instructed Noah to remember what all had happened and take comfort that such a catastrophe would never again be allowed to happen (through water, that is).
because i can.
What does an emotion look like? What shape does it have? Is it transparent or opaque? Does it have a particular color or is it clear? Can you taste it? Does it have a smell? Is it solid, liquid or gas?
The Apocrypha isn't accepted as canon.
wich would say to me that some perfect diety didnt inspire it because men wrote it
List ONE contradiction.
