Absolutely nothing wrong with the name Montreal Canadiens. That is what you are, after all. Nothing could be more accurate, unless you wanted to be more precise and go with Montreal Quebecois.

I don't think even the Quebecois would want that, in history they referred to themselves as Canadiens, and its such a cultural icon that any suggestion to changing it would probably result in riots akin to a Habs victory (yes, our fans riot when we win, or lose)

I'm sure that no offense was intended in naming the Illinois team the Illini, and in having a student dress up in a plains Indian costume and do an Indian-looking dance during the half-time show. Probably very few students ever had any idea what happened to the Illini in the first place, or even thought to ask. The whole show amounted to a simple pageantry of ignorance.

I could see how that could be insulting because for starters it doesn't sound remotely historically accurate. If I remember correctly Illinois was more woodlands than plains.

Getting back to being Serious:

It is note equivalent to the other example concerning Jewish people, because of the holocaust (and some holocaust survivors are still alive).

Riots in the middle of Winter? Well, better not change the name, then, although the locals could probably benefit from some sort of anger management training.

Suppose a team in Germany were to call itself the Berlin Hymies, and, for the half-time show, they had a student show up in a fake rabbi outfit, and do a pretend prayer and then a dance that was supposed to resemble a Jewish folk dance. Suppose further that no offense was intended, because the German students had absolutely no idea about the history of Jews in Europe.

If no offense were intended, then such a display would not be an attempted caricature but instead a sign of fondness for the Jewish people, which would certainly be an improvement in attitude as compared to the horrid thoughts and actions of the Germans as of about seven decades ago. Referring back to the article I posted initially,

Dennis Prager wrote:
The left owns the language. Married women are not to be referred to as "Mrs." but as "Ms." And the words "lady," "feminine" and "masculine" have largely gone to their graves. High school and college teams with American Indian names must drop those names because by definition, according to the left, they offend American Indians.

(This last example has always perplexed me. Why does the name Florida State Seminoles offend Indians? One caller to my radio show once responded to that question by asking me how I would feel as a Jew if some team took the name "Jews." I told him that I would be thrilled. For nearly 4,000 years, Jews have been looking for fans.)

I know its a total disgrace

And anyone who presented reasons to suggest that such a display might be wrong or offensive would be guilty of "Leftist Language Control?"

No just anyone suggesting there should be civil or criminal laws against such behavior.

So change, for example, the name of the football team "Washington Redskins" to "Washington Hymies?" Or maybe the "Washington Palefaces?"

Maybe so. "Redskins" is a derogatory term for American Indians. A silly name for a football team in our nation's capital. Especially after what our nation did to the "redskins."

But what about the Montreal Canadiens? Notre Dames "Fighing Irish'? The Boston Celtics? And is "Brave" ( as in 'Atlanta Braves') really any worse than "Viking" ( as in 'Minnasotta Vikings')? Both are legendary warriors associated with particular ethnic groups.

Just curious, what is wrong with the Montreal Canadiens name? The fan base here in Montreal is enormous and I have literally never heard anyone complain about their name, maybe some of their less spectacular games though

Well- thats kinda my point. You can name a team after a White ethnic group ( French Canadians) so why not after Indians?
Im being the devil's advocate. I do have to admit that "Redskins" is a pretty dumb ( to say the least) name for a team.

According to the original article, anyone who advocates "public opprobrium" against such behaviour would be labeled a "Leftist Language Controller."

Doesn't "Canadien" refer to all Canadians, regardless of race?

Depends on how far the opprobrium goes, there is disagreeing with someone and refusing to associate with them, and then there is actively seeking to punish those who say words or conduct themselves in a manner which offends you. Refusing to associate with them is the only acceptable response I can see at least as long as dueling/fighting to settle differences is discouraged.

Because it's really not the same. Our culture is white-dominated, and does not have a history of institutional prejudice or genocide against whites. That is why "n****r" is much more offensive than "cracker."

Anyways, I would probably avoid naming a team after any ethnic group. I've heard enough racist jokes directed at the Irish, and we don't need to continue perpetuating racial stereotypes of any kind.

What do you mean by "punish?" If you're talking about legal means, then I agree. The law must uphold absolute freedom of speech. But private citizens are entirely free to criticize and attack speech of which they disapprove.

Actually, I think a more apropos occupation title would be Leftist Language Control Advocate.

critic isn't punishment, attack could be, but i was really referring to violence/emotional blackmail/brainwashing. The kind of thing that might be done to subvert someones opinions by attacking the integrity(directly and forcibly) of the person themselves instead of educating them or dismantling any reasoning behind their opinions.(which is too say actual integrity not apparent integrity) aka to browbeat.

Two wrongs don't make a right, if you think its not okay to try offend black people, then you should demonstrate the same courtesy to whites. Both terms you used are offensive.
