OP's hypothesis actually supported by recent scientific study which found that oxytocin, the "bonding" hormone, also simultaneously increases/heightens bigotry/racism/prejudice towards those "not in one's own group".

ie. The more "lovey dovey"/"loving" you feel towards members of your own group the more hostile you are likely to feel towards those outside it.
