Ragtime, you might actually have better luck if you were to try talking candidly and openly about your experience with religion.
No, I get the same treatment no matter how I say it. It's
what I believe which so provokes.
Nah, trust me: what provokes people is the fact that you are generally obnoxious. You could remedy this fact if you really wanted to.

The Bible predicted this. The Gospel is described in the Greek as "Skandalon", or "rock of offense" (rock that one trips over).
It is said straightforwardly in the New Testament that the Gospel is, itself, offensive to mankind, because mankind is sinful.
Notice that not even Jesus could preach the truth in a way that didn't offend (see Pharisees' reactions in Matt, Mark, Luke, John) -- so what chance have I?
His conversations with the Pharisees and the Sadducees were actually somewhat interesting, mostly because these conversations help reveal the lines along which ancient Judea's politics were divided.

You've sinned, and you need God to save you.
What did I say in those few words? The Gospel. Its central idea is impossible to convey without offense resulting.
I don't think that it's so much offensive as simply inaccurate. Try to understand that you are talking to someone who has actually read the Gospels and studied their background.
Jesus actually preached a
system of belief, and it was really a fairly common outlook for people who lived in his place of birth. It's very interesting, actually. I think you would enjoy reading about it.
