This PPR forum could be enjoyable, but it's oten not.
I took a look at the other thread that keeps getting mentioned and I must say, when someone is offended that other people point out the imaginary quality of their imaginary friend, it's only "being a dick" when that person is 5. Getting mad over being told there's no Santa, as an adult, is just silly.
Also: There's no Santa. Sorry.

If you want to teach science in a science classroom what possible contribution could there be by deliberately taking over an education so that you can illegally attempt to force the teaching of religious dogma?
I'm afraid the fundie lunatics stopped playing nice and reasonable a long time before the atheists decided to start annoying them.
isnt it more accurate to say that it is only in recent years religion had competition as a way of understanding the world, now they have simply resorted to their old ways of doing buisness?

Yes, that's it. We can still talk about what I would call real events and another might talk in what if ways...like maybe the basket reached into a parallel universe, and here's why I think that, etc. (True is, I have no idea, that's why I want to see it, not to believe it, but to examine it.)

Would you think ill of someone who would?
I would.
I would.
I'd probably ask if I could sit with them.
I don't believe I can "save" anyone in five minutes or 100 years, any more than I believe the Easter Bunny heroically died in that awful helicopter crash to keep us from going to hell. So nothing I can tell them is going to save them, the most I can hope for is what ever happens is good for them. Hell is not made for Man anyway, it's for Satan and his fallen angels. It's not about "saving" anyway, for Quaker it's about letting the light of Jesus reveal to ourselves who we truly are.
And for many, they so don't like what they see, they reject it.
I didn't.

On a completely different level, this is a forum for individuals on the autism spectrum. Chalk most of it up to "Excuse me. I couldn't help but overhear you discussing this topic that has nothing to do with me and felt the need to tell you that you're wrong."
I can agree with that, why just today I overheard someone with a problem and I....

Whew. Glad you took care of that. I had missed it.

What does that mean?
I have a few interpretations, tell me which is the right one:
1. People who try Quakerism and reject it can't deal with the fact that they are really blessed spiritual beings and prefer to hide in the darkness of materialism.
2. People who try Quakerism and reject it realise that they are, in fact, complete moral failures compared to Jesus, but instead of asking for Jesus's help, they snub Him in favour of embracing their lower natures.
3. People who try Quakerism and reject it are just a-holes who don't get It.
4. Jesus is kind of like acid and people who have bad trips on Jesus either deserve to, or aren't ready for Him, yet.
5. Jesus is a bit of a taskmaster and he makes you realise the absolute mountain of self-improvement that you must surmount. Some people despair of this seemingly impossible feat of becoming Christlike. Life is already hard enough for some people.
There are probably many others. and the ones I've given are probably the wrong ones. As an ex-Catholic and an ex-Quaker, I wanna know what you mean.

Depends on what timescale you are looking at.
The ancient greeks had well developed philosophies and mathematics based exploration of reality, christianity and then islam shut that down by screaming blasphemy very loudly.

True. Though we have the Muslims to thank for preserving the works of the Greeks et al, as the lovely, far sighted Christians were busy destroying all of that "heresy". "Algebra" for example comes from the Arabic "al-jabr"

There is nothing you can do, no self-improvement you can do, no help can really be offered to you. We are complete moral failures, but Jesus already knows this, and demands nothing of us, because He knows we can't do it. Many people cannot accept this, and think there must be some way to earn it. Thus you see many Christians trying to be good, thinking they are engaging in invisible spiritual warfare, and trying to "convert" as many people as they can with fear and intimidation.
It's just not like that.

I reject the concept that i am a "complete moral failure".
I am a work in progress. I never asked to be born in the first place, let alone to be put on this planet as a completely clean slate and then to be taught how to be a human being by a community of other people who are also a work in progress.
I am a creation of my forebears, and my forebears are the only standard anyone has a right to hold me to.
I don't need a supreme deity to forgive me for my failings - i have myself and my peers for that already.
If there were a supreme deity, the hard part would be forgiving him/her/it for putting me here in the first place.

I'm sorry, I meant in an absolute equation of 100% "goodness" vs. XX.999% of any given mortals goodness.

Maybe the forum needs to be retitled then.
Any suggestions?
Any suggestions?
What was the name for that part of Hell in Dante's Inferno where everyone ran towards the center of an enclosure and crashed into each other violently, only to come out to the opposite edge and do it all over again? I hope that is the book I am talking about...I remember some scene from some book that had that. I also remember it included former Popes.
EDIT: Just found it. It was the Fourth Circle of Hell.

Does the word Politics in the title hint you that you would enjoy the forum? Every republican, democrat, anarchist and communist in the forum has to go through arguing and justifying his views.
If philosophy was relevant and we cared about it then it would probably be the same about philosophy.
If you are religious or nonreligious, expect to have to discuss and defend your views. That's what a forum is for.
