It should be legalized immediately.

Second, as a bureaucrat. Many people talk about the trifecta: legalize, regulate and tax. All well and good. But just how do you propose to go about this? A vast amount of marijuana currently produced is grown in farming enterprises operated by organized crime groups. Are these organizations likely to vacate the market quietly? This is not like the repeal of alcohol prohibition where there was an extant industry ready to resume production--this is a case where we are purporting to legitimate an industry that likely has no intention of being legitimated.

You obviously don't get what legalizing pot would do. Current drug cartels and black market operations that charge exorbitant rates because of the severe legal restrictions on the supply of the good (cannabis) would be wiped out by new, cheaper, legit growers. It wouldn't happen overnight, but within 4-6 years of ending prohibition its reasonable to suspect that marijuana drug lords would be reduced to a shadow of their former shelves.

I do not use illicit drugs and am a teetotaller, for any curious folks out there.

This seems to be something most liberals, conservatives, moderates, etc all agree on... If there is any issue that is not particularly divisive this is one and yet our governments do not seem to listen. What a world

Cool therapist I guess  I've never heard of pot triggering flashbacks... I was not aware peyote flashbacks even existed :/

It triggered mild flashbacks to a bad mushroom trip in me for years, if those can be considered flashbacks. It was the same discomfort I felt.
Doesn't happen anymore though.

All drugs should be decriminalized or legal like they did in Portugal I think it was, and cannabis should certainly be legal......seriously it should not be a 'crime' to use a drug, nor should one be treated as a criminal if they develop a drug problem, that should be treated as a health issue not a legal issue.

Cannabis does not cause psychosis. What it *can* do is trigger it in people who are already mentally ill.

Actually, the largest study ever done on the subject involved 46,000 subjects, controlled for pre-existing mental illness, and found using marijuana 1-10 times put users in a group 1.5 times more likely to be diagnoses with schizophrenia later in life, and using more than that resulted in odds 2.3 times greater. This was a longitudinal study, following participants for 15 years.
Schiophrenia in users and non-users
Other studies even accounted for other types of substance abuse, and confirmed the original findings.
Use as a Risk Factor

Other studies show a link between transient psychotic symptoms in healthy individuals and potent cannabis use.
Psychosis in Healthy People

The evidence that memory and intelligence are negatively affected in heavy users is rock-solid, but we'll assume "heavy" by definition represents a non-majority number of users.

Until people plan on getting tested for the genetic markers for schizophrenia prior to usage of cannabis (which, by the way, I believe are still only estimated to be responsible for 50% of all cases), whether the drug causes it or acts in conjunction with genes is pretty moot.

correlation does not = causation...also they have found in some people some cannabanoids in cannabis help some people with schizophrenia.

Yes. I mean, alcohol is legal and has caused a lot more trouble than weed ever has. Well, that is, it wouldn't if it was legal. I once heard that weed is bad because people kill each other over it, though they wouldn't be killing each other if they could just get it at a local drug store. Getting drunk also does more damage to your body than getting high on weed does. So yeah...

a couple of non-scientific observations and comments: here in HumCo, better than a third of the people, possibly more than half, age 40 or under smoke pot at least occasionally; probably 1 in 5 has grown at least one plant at some point, or tried to. This is based on my observations of local culture and the difficulty in finding a roomate if you absolutely disallow pot in any form and any amount- most give a quick, 'thanks anyway, bye.' There will be absolutely no difficulty in picking up the slack if the current cartel growers decide to head to less verdant fields.

Second, smoking pot should be illegal anywhere it's currently illegal to smoke a cigarette, regardless of purpose or general legality. I don't like cigarette smoke, I don't like pot smoke. I want it legal, but I don't want to have to sit in a miasma of it any time I go out to eat.

I couldn't imagine them selectively being okay with marijuana smoke in places like restaurants, public buildings, and bars but not okay with tobacco - especially with the smoke being psychoactive and small children and babies being present.

every drug should be legal the way we prosecute users and dealers now mimics very closely the way we used to go on witch hunts.
the only difference is then we believed drugs where magic and now we don't.

Yes. The war on drugs is a massive failure and the whole reason marijuana even got banned is because of economic interests and racism. The road to prohibition was paved with bad intentions from the start.

Yes. It's so commonly used it may as well be legal anyway, it seems pointless for so many recreational drugs to be illegal.

I don't get it when people say it should be illegal because some people abuse it or move on to harder drugs.

Should we get rid of bridges/tall buildings because some people jump off?
Should we get rid of hamburgers because some people eat too many of them?
Should we get rid of cars/planes because some people get killed in accidents?
Should we get rid of the internet because some people neglect their real lives?

Not a valid argument in my opinion. Rape and murder are quite common aswell. So is pretty much all other crime....

But I agree to some extent that Cannabis should be legalised, although it's not something I'd particularly like to partake in using. But it should just be the responsibility of large pharmaceutical companies to manufacture it it a safe way so people will know exactly what they would be getting, instead of it being cultivated in someone's basement or something, with all sorts of crap added in to bulk it up etc. So maybe cultivating it and selling it yourself should be illegal, but if it's produced responsibly and carefully monitored out in the open then I wouldn't see the problem with that.
