Navaho chant

In beauty I walk
With beauty before me I walk
With beauty behind me I walk
With beauty above me I walk
With beauty above and about me I walk
It is finished in beauty
It is finished in beauty

Ernest Hyde

My mind was a mirror:
It saw what I saw,it knew what I knew.
In my youth my mind was just a mirror
In a rapidly flying car,
Which catches and loses bits of the landscape.
Then in time
Great scratches were made on the mirror,
Letting the outside world come in,
And letting my inner self look out.
For this is the birth of the soul in sorrow.
A birth with gains and losses.
The mind sees the world as a thing apart,
And the soul makes the world at one with it's self.
A mirror scratched reflects no image-
And this is the silence of wisdom.

Edgar Lee Masters

According to the mainstream interpretation of predicate logic, the sentence

Quote:
If X happens, then all atheist Muslims hear it.

is always true, no matter what X is. However, the sentence

Quote:
If X happens, then some atheist Muslims hear it.

is always false, no matter what X is.

If the statement "an atheist Muslim exists" can be deduced, then any well formed logical statement Y can also be deduced. Sweet!

Painted poetry

Someone laid his brush
And took his brush away.
He left gold or blue there
he did not hope to live forever;
He left green or black there
And minute cranes were flying.
The painting was breathing
The air while drying.
He did not wish to live forever.

Jane Tassi

"War is ,at first, the hope that one will be better off;next, the expectation that the other fellow will be worse off;then, the satisfaction that he isn't any better off;and, finally the surprise at everyone's being worse off."

"Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion." -- Steven Weinberg, in his Address at the Conference on Cosmic Design, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Washington, D.C. (April 1999)

"Belief in myths allows the comfort of having an opinion without the discomfort of having to think." -- Attributed to many authors.

"Humanity has the stars in its future, and that future is too important to be lost under the burden of juvenile folly and ignorant superstition." -- Dr. Isaac Asimov; Author, Philosopher, Scientist

"Religion without morality is a superstition and a curse, and morality without religion is impossible." -- Mark Hopkins

"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." -- The Mahatma, Mohandas Gandhi

"It should be made clear that in order to live a Christian life, any Christian must be able to discriminate and hate, because that's what the Bible says." -- Dr. Bernhard Kuiper, Colorado Springs Presbyterian minister

"In the end all your knees will bow to Jesus Christ whether you want to or not." -- Kevin Tebedo, Director of Colorado for Family Values

"There is no question that deadly force should be used to protect innocent life ... I definitely feel good about what I have done and what I am doing. I think I have acted nobly." -- Reverand Paul Hill, sentenced to death for killing a Florida abortion doctor and bodyguard

... AND SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST ...

"Whoever wants to be a Christian should tear the eyes out of his Reason ... Reason must be deluded, blinded, and destroyed ... Faith must trample underfoot all reason, sense, and understanding, and whatever it sees must be put out of sight and ... know nothing but the word of God ... The word and works of God is quite clear, that women were made either to be wives or prostitutes ... Even though they grow weary and wear themselves out with child-bearing, it does not matter, let them go on bearing children till they die, that is what they are there for ... If I had to baptize a Jew, I would take him to the bridge of the Elbe, hang a stone around his neck and push him over with the words 'I baptize thee in the name of Abraham' ... The Jews deserve to be hanged on gallows, seven times higher than ordinary thieves ... We ought to take revenge on the Jews and kill them." -- Martin Luther, 1483-1546, leader of the Protestant break from Catholicism

I am the wind which breathes upon the sea,
I am the wave of the ocean,
I am the murmur of the billows-
I am the ox of the seven combats,
I am the vulture upon the rocks,
I am a beam of the sun,
I am the fairest of plants,
I am the wild boar in valor,
I am the salmon in the water,
I am a lake in the plain,
I am a world of knowledge,
I am the point of the lance of battle,
I am the God who created fire in the head.

Amairgen - chief poet of the Milesians

Two thirds of your life has passed without polishing even a spot of your sacredness.
Life devours you, your days are busy with this and that.
If you don't turn around at my words ,what can I do?

I came across this exchange... I think I'll put part of it in my sig...

William Roper: So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law!

Sir Thomas More: Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?

William Roper: Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!

Sir Thomas More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

"Where is the one whose candle burns in the dawn?
Where is the handful of dirt that somehow joins with the light of the Pleiades?"
