The problem that a lot of Israelis and Zionists have with critics of Israel is that quite a lot of its Arab/Islamist 'critics' conflate Israel and Jews.

If anything i'd say its the reverse. President Amoudinejad for example has before spoken openly and proudly of the Jewish community of some 250 000 that live freely and happily in Iran. He could also be clearly seen shaking hands with orthodox rabbis in the video above. Heck, many Orthodox Jews do not want to be associated with Zionism as the above video also clearly shows.

If you believe what Amoudinejad says, when it comes to Jews living in Iran; I have a bridge to sell you on Saturn....

Iran is basically a theocracy nonmuslims are 2nd class citizens at best in Iran. The Iranian lunatic has also called for the total annihilation of Israel repeatedly.

Actually many supporters of Israel know that if the Israelis laid down their arms there would be a 2nd Holocaust. Several countries in the Middle East have tried to annihilate every Israeli down to the last infant! The Iranian regime is on record of wanting to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth.

Right, have you seen or heard of the way Israel treats Palestinian prisoners (or for that matter the way it uses military ordinance with minimal regard for civillian casualties)? Sleep deprivation, sustained custody without trial, and arbitrary beatings. Thats just what we know about since the Israeli custody system is highly secretive.

Where is your condemnation of the Syrian or Iranian Governments? The Israelis have to deal with people that try to blow themselves up in restaurants, daycares, markets, etc.

Most countries in the world would have carpet bombed the Palestinians by now; all-in-all the Israelis have shown remarkable restraint.

That isn't actually hard to do, a regular jail in Canada probably makes Gitmo look like a tropical resort...

If the Palestinians would.
1. Stop conducting terrorist attacks.
2. Actually recognize Israel's right to exist.

We would see lasting peace in a few years tops.

As I said to him - less than 9,000 Jews are still living in Iran, and those that can/want to are slowly but surely fleeing. This has been going on for several decades. The vast majority of Iranian Jews live in Israel or the U.S. Jews have been fleeing Arab countries for decades precisely because of anti-Semitic pogroms, murders, rapes, attacks on property and synagogues and so on.

It's not about Israel. Never was.

There were about 80,000 Jews in Iran before the Iranian Revolution and 100,000-150,000 before the maintenance of the State of Israel.

I would imagine that a lot of the Jews still remaining in Iran will be old and/or unwilling to move.

Where do Muslim women come in?

If you were a Jew, would you feel comfortable in a country where the Holocaust and Judaism is repeatedly mocked by official sources and all across the Arab world? Where, all over the Arab world, you can hear Arabic sources saying every day how they want to annihilate the State of Israel and kill Jews? Where the official line is for the destruction of the world's only Jewish state (think about how many Muslim countries there are in the world)?

Yup - if the Arab/Islamist/Palestinian terrorist groups laid down their arms and recognised Israel's status and right to exist, there would be a peace deal, the Israelis would give them some land and everyone would go home happy. But they can't abide the idea of Jews "beating" them. If Israel was an Arab Muslim state, no-one would care about Israel's right to exist. It's a tiny country, half the size of the Netherlands in a huge, expansive Arabian desert.

Even in the Gaza Strip, the conditions aren't quite the constant Somali-like warzone as is often made out. It's still an absolute dangerous, violent, dirty, benighted hole, and it's definitely not anywhere I'd want to live, but Gazans currently have the 7th highest population growth rate in the world. They claim they're living in awful, awful squalor, but each family has so many children that they can't possibly afford to feed or look after. Some genocide!

Gazans aren't exactly illiterate people - most Gazans can read and write perfectly well.

It does seem as though those who want a genuinely happy and healthy life move away (precisely because of the conditions that their own people and government subject them to), but then Jewish refugees have had to do this en masse throughout the centuries.

Can't do that - the evil "Zionist" big-nosed blood-drinking fat horrible wealthy dirty Jew who runs the world will then control them.

She had better not wear those earrings when going into battle. Might lose an ear... And she should put some tape on her watch band to prevent it from being stuck in some object during combat... Doesn't the IDF know *anything* about safety in military operations? AND PUT ON YOUR DAMN HELMET, SOLDIER! (typical Aspie response)

She also needs to button up her uniform. Sloppy dress is not tolerated. She also should take that small necklace off. A trim would also be more convenient in battle (the last thing you want is to have your hair blow in your face while engaging the enemy).

I actually considered mentioning the necklace... but what if it's really dog tags? I know she is wearing some other type of insignia on top of her shirt, but I can't make it out...

And by the way.... no camouflage? And why is she standing out in the open? Risky, as the effective range of a standard NATO 7.62 round is up to 800 metres...

This military stuff really makes no sense to me...

But more in line with the general content of this thread: If she walked around dressed like that in many other countries in The Middle East (or several North African or Central Asian countries), she would be at great risk of battery, rape or both... might be the reason why she serves in the IDF, and not Hamas... but this is pure speculation...

I know conflicts, religion, oil and politics are important, but sometimes I think that the main problem in the region is much more basic. The Israelis and Jews in general tend towards a closed society only marrying within their group. The Arabs and other middle east cultures tend towards closed societies too and dominate & hide their women behind veils and robes and burkas etc. This isolationism is a significant factor in the self-perpetuation of conflict. And it denies young healthy males access to some of the most attractive and intelligent women on the planet. For this is area is also the longest running modern civilization in the world, roughly 10,000 years old.

Here's a fav pic of two other Israeli Defense Force women.

I really hate to think what would happen to them if they were captured in wartime :(

Its the occupational hazard of soldiering and women are at greater risk of sexual assault then men. But many do not know that women in the military experience sexual assault about 3 times as much as that of civilian women. And that is not due to capture, but under normal conditions by their own co-soldiers. If they are personnally very concerned about being captured they do what concerned men do, which is save the last bullet for yourself. Just being in the military is a difficult and sometimes courageous thing for a women to do and one of the reasons I admire them so much. I do btw support their movement into the military entirely, as one of the necesssary steps to establishing total social equality.

The necklace under her shirt looked more like a fancy chain than something to place dog tags on.
As for the camouflage, it's cheaper than (and probably no better than) the all-terrian digital camouflage that has actually led to increases in casualties in U.S. troops. http://news.yahoo.com/pixelated-uniform ... 00627.html
Many poorer countries still favor plain OD over any pattern, mainly due to its cost-effectiveness and availability (roughly $5.00 versus around $20-30 for just a top). I personally prefer Wüstentarn:

Israel's military is more loose compared to say the structure in the US Army. Given pretty much EVERYONE serves, civilian culture permeates the army more than say in the US where there's more career officers and whatnot. Hence the off-duty soldiers carrying weapons in public and on buses etc. Remember a bunch of the middle and high ranking officers in the current military were trained by people who were terrorists and guerillas for a period of time, so they will be....influenced by that

AFAIK most IDF soldiers are treated well by Hamas or Hezbollah. Given they're used for political negotiations and all (liberation of Palestinian POWs...)

I was referring to Elinor Joseph. My Google-Fu and Wiki-Fu says she is Christian. My mileage might vary, though.

But if she indeed is Jewish, then that's all the more reason not to serve in Hamas :D. Same if she was Bahai or Druze.

I wonder if Gilad Shalit would agree after being held by Hamas for more than 5 years:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilad_Shal ... on_process

No point in asking Nachson Wachsman if he agrees, however.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nachshon_Wachsman

Oh, and when you mention liberation of Palestinian POW's, do you mean these noble souls released in exchange for the release of Gilad Shalit?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilad_Shal ... f_the_deal

I'm sure the world will be a better place after their "liberation"...
