I wonder when the bearded savages turn up to threaten God knows what for this insult to their religion...

I think it's awesome what this guy is doing, and I hope he and his congregants stay safe. And I hope I'm proven wrong in assuming that if anything bad happens to him, no one will give a Thomas Crapper.

Me too. I hope the French security services are keeping him safe. He needs all the blessings he can get.

Wouldn't it be cool if gay Mosques start multiplying everywhere?

It would. It would be even better if the Muslim outrage didn't come.

Unfortunately, it'll come. With every brave and good step forward, there's a negative response. We can only pray those brave enough to take that first step can weather the storm.

I'm sure we'll get one of our own coming - Newham Council (an extremely Muslim-dominated area of London) has just rejected plans for an enormous mega-mosque in the area, a building that would have been four times the size of St. Paul's Cathedral, the second biggest church in the entire country, would be considerably more spacious than the UK's largest church and would actually become the largest religious building in Europe. I never thought they'd do it, but they have - and the misgivings came from many, many Muslims too, for lots of different reasons. Good on 'em for facing down the thousands of Islamists that turned up from all over the country to whinge, and for defying the Islamist desire to have a massive symbol of their conquest.

It'll be interesting to see how Muslims respond if gay marriage becomes legal in France. If my nerd calculations are correct, France will have the highest population of Muslims out of any other gay marriage friendly country at 7.5 percent, with belgium at 6 percent, and the US at .8 percent.

Although in France, apparently 36% percent of Muslims are considered "Observant believers", while only 10% of Muslims in Belgium are considered "practicing muslims."

Islam is considered a minority religion in Belgium while in France it's the second largest religion.

So we've seen other religions deal with gay marriage in the US, but perhaps we will see for the first time how Islam deals with gay marriage if it becomes legalized in France.

They'll do as what they do now. Some will spread homophobic bile and attack gay people, whilst their apologists and many (but not all) Muslims in the public eye will make some mealy-mouthed statements about it. Most decent people - Muslims and non-Muslims - will keep their heads down in Muslim areas.

Although it's very much worth noting that French Muslims are quite a lot more tolerant of homosexuality generally than British Muslims - there definitely seems to be considerable number of more liberal Muslims in French society, although that's not at all to say that France does not have lots of its own issues with Islamic communities to deal with.

The Jerusalem Post

Muhammad Ludovic Lütfi Zahed, a gay French-Algerian man, is slated to open the first gay mosque at the end of November.

The Turkish daily newspaper Hurriyet first reported last week on the plan to establish the mosque. Zahed told the Turkish paper, “In normal mosques, women have to sit in the back seats and wear a headscarf and gay men are afraid of both verbal and physical aggression. After performing the Hajj, I realized that a mosque for gays was a must for gay Muslims who want to perform their prayers.”

The Jerusalem Post reported earlier this year on Zahed’s marriage to Qiyam al-Din, a South African, during a ceremony outside Paris in February, approved by an imam in France. The men had previously married in South Africa, where same-sex marriage is legal, but the French government under then-president Nicolas Sarkozy refused to recognize it.

This courageous fella has a long fight ahead of him with a lot of violent people wanting his head. I don't envy the chap.

Good on him and all the best - I'll drink a beer in his honour tomorrow. :)

They will kill him. He has no hope of surviving.

But, will he be afforded the security measures that Rushdie enjoyed?

That depends on who his friends are.
