It will become a red giant star, at which time it will vaporize the inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars). After this phase, the outer layers of the Sun will continue to expand. As this happens, the core will contract; the helium atoms in the core will fuse together, forming carbon atoms and releasing energy. The core will then be stable since the carbon atoms are not further compressible - it will have become a multi-billion-ton diamond, a fitting cenotaph for the Late, Great Planet Earth.

Cool! I can hardly wait!

Miss USA just won the Miss Universe contest. So, it does seem likely.

Fixed.

Even this is barring things like coronal mass ejections and impacts with foreign bodies.

Look through this list. Read every year and the event that supposedly happens in said year and then read who predicted said event and then come back here and laugh. LAUGH I SAY!! !

I don't think it follows that because human soothsayers are nonsense, X event is therefore not going to happen in Y time period.

I know. If every prediction made in the past failed, what makes anyone think 2012 is a sure thing? I've looked into the 2012 phenomena. Nothing significant is going to happen that will result in Earth's destruction. Scientists debunked all theories. We're going to be fine like we always have.

I don't know of anyone who thinks it's a "sure thing", religious nutters aside, and who gives a damn about them?

"World" and "planet" are not exact synonyms, as I pointed out.
Nor have we "always been fine".
Do you know how close Earth came to being dominated by crustaceans?
Do ya, punk?

World and Planet are not the same. I get that point.
Man's worst enemy is often himself considering war and man made disasters and we've also encountered numerous natural disasters as well and we have always bounced back time and again haven't we despite the billions and trillions of dollars to repair the damages?
And for crustaceans as they are an invasive species, all we have to do is keep consuming them as a source of food. I just had snow crab for dinner last weekend along with shrimp fettuccine alfredo.
Your move.

I KNEW the "old" Mayan Calender was going to be just like the tear off/throw away calenders we use all the time.

Wait...what have we repaired again?

Are you making a "Has been...therefore, will be" argument?
...really?

Your dinner = moving goal post

Well you proved to be a worthy opponent. I'm gonna drop out of this argument before it drags on any longer and starts to get ugly.

It is stupid that the Mayan achievements, are totally overlooked by something that has nothing whatsoever to do with them.

Why give them creative? Well because they weren't totally stupid, their calender was not perfect, but they were considering time on a scale the was massive at the time. That is pretty advanced.

Excellent point! It's a shame that modern interest in the entire, impressive Mayan culture has been reduced to New Age hype based on a (most likely) flawed interpretation of their calendar.

It makes me shudder to think what people thousands of years from now will think was important to us.

The World IS dominated by arthropods.

Crustaceans in the sea.
And their insect cousins on land.
