I do volunteer work and donate to registered charities, and I live a relatively simple life, when compared to others in my income bracket.


Just speaking of "we" in general. Of course there's exceptions and you seem to be one(and that's great!). I mean "we" because they don't force us to buy things but they try to "manipulate" people, like the sophists in Greece.
