So, they saved up for something nice. Or maybe it was a gift. As if poor people are somehow forbidden to have nice things. What's the point?

Meaning from social security or welfare? Only, again, if they saved their pennies. I seriously doubt anyone could buy a big screen TV in one lump sum of their benefits, and still eat and pay rent.

From the state and federal. Everyone gets taxes back every year when they are employed. When you have children, you get more back, same as when you are married.
I apologize if I came across as overly sharp in my response; I'm currently battling high blood sugar, and have been hungry as a bear - and just as moody.

Well since some countries have worse poverty issues, that obviously means poverty is not an issue in the U.S.

Of course it is important. People are more attentive to differential standing than to absolute standing. If you have only one pot to pee in and your neighbor has two, naturally you feel cheated and deprived.
