Anyway, my mom told me about the guy using slurs and that he was kicked off the show. She asked if I had heard the news. I hadn't . She told me he is an older man and that's when it dawned on me this guy is probably planning on retiring soon so he wants to go out with a bang, generating the most publicity he can, since he knows he wants to retire anyway. Notice none of the younger guys made the slur?

I think it's just to get more rednecks hooked on DD. This is why he said it.

He didn't use any slurs as far as I can remember. He was asked something about his feelings about gay people and he said it's a sin and doesn't see why a man would want another man or something like that. He said a little bit about his beliefs about gay people, and those beliefs were taught to him by his church. It's obviously a very conservative, evangelical fundamentalist church, and I think I could probably tell you which denomination it is, but I won't since I didn't read it anywhere yet. It's a common belief that's taught in those churches, both up north and down south.

His beliefs aren't politically correct and even though I don't share his overall religious beliefs, I used to be a very devout Christian and I didn't believe that even then, so it's not all Christians who believe that way, but there are plenty of them who do. I disagree very strongly with his beliefs, but he didn't use slurs, call names, or anything like that. He answered a question that he was asked in an interview, which I'm sure had been OK'd by his PR people before it was asked.

I'm pretty sure this whole "scandal" is a setup so they can get out of doing the show, sell a bunch of stuff right before Christmas, and maybe get Phil some kind of side jobs speaking at churches or something. They make plenty of money in their business, so this is a memorable way to end the show, since the other boys are leaving too they said.

I just can't believe that all those people out there are acting like this is a surprise, and nobody seems to think about the fact that they could have prevented him being asked the one question they knew he would offend so many people with.

I also wonder if any of those people who are doing commentary and giving interviews and writing articles about how he needs to be taken off the show for this were actually surprised at his opinions and why people didn't start protesting after the first few shows when it became pretty obvious what his answer would be on that question.

Well, it is Duck Dynasty! People generally don't like it when rednecks make homophobic comments and this type of opinion is considered homophobic even if it's based on religion. Why not just say the same thing about people who get divorces or commit adultery? In the south, they either play the homo card or the race, it seems.

I agree with what you think about the merchandise! It is about selling and getting attention more than anything.

Walmart sold t-shirts with Shutzenstaffel insignias and dog food that was known to cause kidney failure for months on end. I doubt they're going to get rid of their massive phalanx of Duck Dynasty marketing products anytime soon. It would eliminate half of their inventory overnight.

As for this greasy wizard guy from Duck Dynasty, he has the right to say whatever he wants. But A&E has the right to conduct their business however THEY want, and he's under contract with their network. When you sign on with an employer, your words can have consequences. If I were a news anchor and I put on a Hitler costume and rode a unicycle down main street, do you think I'd have a job the next day?

A few years back at Mal Wart they had StoneCold Steve Austin stuff everywhere, and other wrestling stuff. It was a trend and you don't see it there anymore. This is also a trend,in a few years they will be old news anyway.Easy come, easy go.
I don't foresee them dumping the Duck stuff anytime soon, but I'm enjoying exercising my consumer's right to complain.

If they were Pelican Dynasty instead of Duck, I would buy

Don't forget ya'll. Duck Commander merchandise benefits Phil and them. Duck Dynasty merchandise benefits A&E. Walmart was packed with Duck Dynasty merchandise. The people who are buying it all up to support Phil are just giving their money to A&E.

Seriously, if the guy really cares about the Bible. he should speak out against divorce. Adultery is spoken out in one of The Ten Commandments. Homosexuality isn't even mentioned. Seems like adultery is the worst sin yet they never go after them.

I never watched the show, but anyway, a gay-lesbian group is experiencing a backlash for having complained about the homophobic comments

http://tv.yahoo.com/news/duck-dynasty-f ... 50637.html

Were these comments actually on the TV show?

We don't seem to get any visits from the Fox News crowd any more, but, predictably:

Quote:
Robertson’s supporters have started petitions, called for boycotts and include Sarah Palin, Sean Hannity and Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal. Currently, more than 70,000 people have signed the online petition asking A&E to drop the suspension.

Well, I'm already boycotting that TV show. I never saw any point in finding out what channel it is on in the first place.

They watch FOX news of course,Jerry Springer, wrestling, drive jacked up trucks that get five miles to the gallon,no muffler and smokes, they drink cheap canned beer, eat spam and white bread, rascist, has there ever been a black person on that show? That area is 50/50 so you would think they would have at least one black friend. And they beat their wives and dogs, listen to commercial country.Proles.
If the merchandise is flying off the shelves, where is it going?Ive never seen anyone wearing one of those tacky sweatshop t-shirts in this area.

Why do they care about "backlash" anyway? Absolutely none of the people making death threats were ever going to give money to GLAAD before. They probably would have been more than happy to threaten them BEFORE all of this. Hell, I bet a lot of the people doing it aren't smart enough to spoof their phone numbers or use proxies, so you could probably get them in legal trouble if the authorities could be bothered to do anything. If anything, it's an opportunity to have a giggle, m8.

In a nutshell, if you don't like the show then simply don't watch it. I don' t watch it only because I have always found it to be silly and boring.

A&E considered it a business decision, but because DD is so wildly popular, profits won't be hurt at all.

Nothing more than crying wolf.

My mother watches it. She thinks they are funny and stupid and likes to watch them do funny and stupid things. Now, I don't like my mother and she's an evil manipulative b***h who has borderline personality disorder (diagnosed) and makes my life hell, but I do have to say that she's anything but a redneck.

Yes, she watches Fox, but that's because she's got a thing for Shepherd Smith. She has never seen Springer or wresting - she says they are trashy and has no interest in them. She doesn't drive at all any more but her last three cars before she stopped were an Altima, a Buick Regal and a Mercury Cougar, and she kept them in good condition. She doesn't drink at all but back when she would sometimes have a drink occasionally, it was always out at a restaurant and usually some kind of complicated mixed pastel drink. She eats Spam, but so do I. It's good. We both like it fried and on a sandwich with yes, white bread, and mayo and cheese and mustard. She's not racist either, my grandfather was the racist in the family. As for black friends, she has some - if you want to call anyone that she's ever "friends" with to be actual friends. She loves animals more than people and she's not violent toward anyone except me and then only in private. She doesn't like country really, and can't stand most music produced after 1965. She's got an education as well and was one of the women in the 70's that broke the glass ceiling where we lived and got in hospital administration instead of simply "managing the other nurses".

So, no. Not everyone that watches the show fits the stereotype of the people in it. She also likes Si. She thinks he's the funniest one of them all. She actually has DD tshirts and a few other things that the kids got her. She bought one herself months ago when she saw it at Walmart, when they first started getting that stuff, but because she likes the show so much she had to get it because she didn't think it was gonna be a "thing". She thought it might be sort of unusual to have.

She's also not homophobic, is pro gay rights, pro choice, and while she's very republican, she's like me and she doesn't toe any party line, she has opinions on issues themselves, which may not always match her party's opinion.

I get that some folks just think it's a funny show.I'm just so tired of all these reality shows about the South that just make us look stupid.Buckwild,My Redneck Vacation,etc...Those redneck vacation people were at that house in Conneticut and they had beer cans all over the front yard. The back yard is the place for that,in a trash can.
That's not something you or I would do.You would have that place cleaner than it was when you arrived. Its like they go out of there way to look dumb. There are so many things that are beautiful and wonderful about Southern culture and none of that comes through in these shows.

I never watch it either, except one time because someone else wanted me to watch it. I found it very boring and incredibly fake. I had a hard time believing they filmed it outside. If they did. they managed to pick the perfect day and massively bug bombed the entire area first. I did not see one fly. How can anyone be outside without at least one? I call foul.

Anyway, it was boring *nods*.

Wasn't interesting enough to convince me I should watch it again but I can see why people around here would get into it since they look so much like they do here. The guys are kinda scabby and the women are done up like Bible belting Pentecostals. Uh-huh, looks familiar.

I watched about ten mnts of it.The show I watched a few times was Hillbilly Blood, but only to mock them :D The episode where they waded across a swampy area was so stupid. They didn't take their shoes off. There are lots of low water bridges here and if you have to cross water when they are flooded, you take off your shoes and hang them around your neck so they will be dry when you get to the other side.Another time they got stuck in about two inches of mud,I drove out yesterday in mud that would have been close to a foot in some of the worst ruts and I didn't get stuck or even slide.
Years ago I was watching that show with that Bam dude and he threw a hissy fit and tossed his parent's dresser out in the yard. When it hit the ground and busted open there were no clothes or anything in it.Yeahhhhh,it's real.

Some of his quotes:

Quote:
“We never, ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job. We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus — whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later, you see what I’m saying?”

Quote:
Women with women, men with men. They committed indecent acts with one another, and they received in themselves the due penalty for their perversions," Robertson said. "They're full of murder, envy, strife, hatred. They are insolent, arrogant, God-haters. They are heartless, they are faithless, they are senseless, they are ruthless. They invent ways of doing evil.

Quote:
Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.

Quote:
It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.

Quote:
“All you have to do is look at any society where there is no Jesus. I’ll give you four: Nazis, no Jesus. Look at their record. Uh, Shintos? They started this thing in Pearl Harbor. Any Jesus among them? None. Communists? None. Islamists? Zero. That’s 80 years of ideologies that have popped up where no Jesus was allowed among those four groups. Just look at the records as far as murder goes among those four groups.”

Quote:
Whether it was hunting, fishing, or playing sports, my children were going to grow up outside. They weren't going to be sitting on the couch inside. At least they didn't grow up to be nerds.

Quote:
What makes me happy is going out and blowing a duck's head off.

I know I'm not from the same area as him, but being from a long line of West Virginia hillfolk, it makes me cringe when someone reinforces those horrible stereotypes.
