Is it racist to accuse someone of racism? I'm thinking specifically of a situation where someone is presumed to be racist because of their presumed race.

Accusing someone of having a bad trait simply because they belong to a racial/ethnic group that is stigmatized by the stereotype of having that bad trait- is prejudice. In Texas they raise two things: steers, and queers. you're a Texan, so you must be a queer!( to quote Lou Gossette Jr. as the Navy drill sargeant in Officer and a Gentleman-hes being homophobic-not me) That's prejudice based upon your origins.

So if the bad trait in question is prejudice itsself then accusing a person of being prejudiced simply because they belong to a group stereotyped as being prejudiced would indeed itsself be prejudice. Washingtonians are known for hating Dallas. you're a Washingtonian. So I assume that you hate Dallas.Drill sargeants are known for shouting homophobic stuff. you're a drill sargeat. So you must hate gays.

So if the OP had substituted the word "prejudice" for the word "racist" in the question then the answer to the question would be "yes". It is indeed predudice to assume that someone is prejudiced simply because they come from some racial/ethnic/geographic origin group that is often associated with prejudice.

Racism (strictly speaking) is not just prejudice, but prejudice plus power. So that complicates the question.

I guess I'll take queer over steer, for sure.

We raise bigger queers in Texas, just so you know.

Don't let your governor know that, or he'll have a sh*t fit!

There's widespread speculation that our governor himself swings that way on the down-low. No one has come forward with a blue dress or anything, though.
