Actually both left and right government are guilty of make a fundmantal mistake time a time again, regenerating deprived areas.
What they do is broker special deals with large multinational companies (example of collusion) to solve jobs issue. These area are very vulnerable because there are few employers, and lack of diversity. So when the rug gets pull from under them the whole local economy collapses.
This comes under short termism, but like I say it is not atypical of either side, they have both done it becuase it is the easy option.
Actually the left were no less enthusiastic about it an promoted the "job for life" idea that became redundant concept many decade ago, if it ever was realisitc.
