So you had an outsider tell you (a local) that you are scum. I guess you have a slight window into how millions of black South Africans felt for hundreds of years when a few thousand white Europeans tell them they are "kafirs" and their traditional homelands don't belong to them anymore (and still don't since 70% of South Africa is still white owned).

I don't think so in that instance cos I was the one descended from immigrants and he wasn't.

I just find it ironic that people get told to go home when they're in their home town and the person saying go home isn't.

If you want to hash out Irish history then I will do that ffs.

Ok sorry...I thought you said you were local? my brother in law is Irish so he despises loyalists (although he himself was born in England). I suspect the man attacking you for being a "fenian" was a loyalist.

Yeah he was.

Yeah I was local as in born in that town and he wasn't, I could tell by accent. But he did it because of my roots and that's - I don't like saying sectarian when it's got nothing to do with religion, there needs another word for it which isn't racist. Xenophobic?

The difference between racism and sectarianism is that you can't look at someone and know they're Irish (despite a lot of people saying you can). He had to eavesdrop my conversation to know. That's white privilege.

That's what happens to a lot of black or brown people too. They get told to go home even though they're in their home towns where they grew up and the person saying it isn't. I find it heavily ironic when someone is in their home town and being told to go home by a stranger.

FTR it was the F word I took offence at not the S word. Scum isn't even a swear word.

And the question was 'why aren't white people told to go home because of their background', not their race. I'm just pointing out it happens between whites.

My area was really isolated for years and the only people here were mostly descendants of the first white settlers. Then we had an influx of “back to the landers.”People here didn’t really like it so they got labeled as “ newcomers”.In some ways the two still don’t mix.I took a truck load of trash to the dump and asked the worker how much to pay and his reply was give me a few dollars.A neighbor that moved here from Kansas took the same amount to the dump and he charged her twenty dollars.
It didn’t help that the new people that moved here mostly considered us to be ignorant hillbillies.Hillbillies yes, ignorant ,no.One person even said we were all lazy because we pooped in the woods and were infested with worms.I have no problem wishing he would go back from where he came from.

They were bigots, but probably not racists since that would mean thinking of themselves as part of an inferior race.

WTF are you talking about?
First off you must have made a typo and meant "think of the other as being of an inferior race", or you meant "think of themselves as a superior race".

Second they often did view other nationalities as being inferior due to ancestry (ie its "racism").

Racism is a subcategory of bigotry. The term racism has been incorrectly broadened to include almost every type of prejudice/bigotry against a group. This trend is just lazy. A racist is specifically a person who is prejudiced against a RACE or RACES. That is why it is called racism. A person can’t be a racist unless the person is bigoted against a race or races. If a bigot incorrectly assumes the other white group is specifically another race I suppose you can argue the bigot is a racist but I even find that debatable. Being prejudiced against a ethnic group or nationality is just as bad as being a prejudiced against a race. The incorrect usage of the terms racist and racism means the terms are being overused. Terms that are overused become cheapened and lose their effectiveness.

That was not a typo but it was mistaken by not spelling out context. If a white person is prejudiced against other white groups but thinks of them as white they can not be racist without thinking of themselves as inferior. As mentioned above if they think of these other groups as another race arguably you could call them racist.

you're hairsplitting. Nineteenth century cartoons would depict the Irish as subhuman apes. So if you think of a group as subhuman then you are being "racist" toward them even if they are (what others would classify)as being of the same "race" as you.

And in the Nineteenth century they used the word "race" more loosely than now to mean something more like how we use the words "ethnicity" or "nationality" today.

U.S. government documents from that Century classified immigrants from each country in Europe as being of separate "races", and even classified northern Italians, and southern Italians as being separate "races".

At the end of the Civil War southern Whites would talk about their "hatred of the Yankee race" (the "Yankee race" being other Americans who were just as White as they were, but came from north of the Ohio River/Mason Dixon line).

Personally I don't hate yankees (northeners), I'm actually good friends with some, unless they look down on the south like my junior high school teacher did. I don't like anybody who looks down on anyone. And frankly I get sick of hearing about how horrible and racist the south is when the north has always been just as guilty of racism.

White immigrants from Eastern Europe get told that that all the time.

White American workers and immigrants abroad get told that all the time.

Americans say that to white Canadians. Canadians say that to white Americans.

But mostly that gets said to whiite Californians.

I second that.

What is ironic is that, the context in which I was told that, was when I was trying to tell a Republican that Russia is "better" because Russia is being more true to the conservative values than America could ever be (and then she said "if Russia is better why don't you go back there"). But I doubt that she ever catched that the whole context was about me being a conservative who was criticizing America for being liberal. I bet she thought it was the opposite and assumed I was trying to promote leftist agenda since in her mind criticizing the America is a leftist thing to do. But that happened back in the Obama days. I am glad Trump is pro-Russia, maybe he can help draw home the point I was, unsuccessfully, trying to back then.

My theory is that people started being looser about race (seeing it only as colour) after the Holocaust where the Nazis tried to kill off the 'Jewish race' Before then, there was definitely a perception of white races.

Also it was seen as a hierarchy with more than two rungs.

Race doesn't actually exist. If it did then nobody would be mixed race. It's not even like with dogs where it can sometimes be dangerous.

Yeah I know. It's just that in the colonies (Australia/USA) that sectarian distinction dies out within one generation. My Irish catholic brother-in-law's parents had no problem with him marrying my sister who is Church of England.

But 10-15 generations and a black American is still considered to come from another planet. It's bizarre.

Race doesn't actually exist. If it did then nobody would be mixed race. It's not even like with dogs where it can sometimes be dangerous.

The existence of "mixed race" doesn't negate the existence of race. Quite the opposite in fact. The notion of race should exist in order for us to be able to mix it. Maybe its Platonic thing about "forms" being ideals that aren't realizable yet what we see is a combination of imperfect versions of those forms. So there is a "concept" of a pure race even though not a single person is in fact pure. In order to get it from philosophy down to biology we can talk about genetic markers. And yes, ancestry.com confirms the point I just made. Whomever they test is always a mixture of many different things; yet they somehow defined those things in order to quantify that mixture.

As far as Nazis hating Jews or Americans hating Irish, I would say there is a distinction between race and ethnicity. In mathematical terms, race is a set, and ethnicities are different subsets of that set. So both Ethiopians and Nigerians are black -- which makes them of the same race -- yet they are different ethnicities. Similarly, English and French are both White -- which again makes them of the same race -- yet they are different ethnicities. And I agree with naturalplastic: rasism is only a subset of bigotry. Bigotry is an idea that one group of people is better than the other -- this doesn't have to be a race: it can be an ethnicity, or it can be religion, or it can be gender, etc. But racism is strictly about race. Every racist is a biggot but not every biggot is a racist. After all, if you are racist you hate a race, a race is a group of people, so you hate a group of people, therefore you are a biggot. But if you are a biggot you don't have to be a racist: you can hate a group of people that has nothing to do with race.

Maybe, in American context, they just confused the terms by lumping together White and American -- and they don't belong together. How can they "possibly" be synonymous unless you want to say that Europeans that immigrate to America and spend few generations here undergo some type of mutation that somehow makes them even Whiter than their ancestors that used to live in Europe. It just makes no sense.

As far as Jews this is a separate story. I have debated about it with people at stormfront and they told me that, while they agree that Europeans -- including both Western and Eastern Europeans -- are White, they don't view Jews as White. So, to their credit, they don't identify White with American (unlike most other people). But I still disagree with their opinion of Jews (I view Jews as White), but that is entirely different animal.

Just a word of caution: Stormfront is a white supremacist site, and associating with them might get you put on a government watch list, as potential terrorists of the Alt Right type frequent them and others.

I heard that Lincoln, who was Northerner, wanted to send blacks back to Africa. Obviously, northerners would deny it. But, in the same way, southerners would deny the accusation that they all wanted slavery. Modern day northerners, of course, don't want to send blacks to africa. But similarly modern day southerners aren't necesserely racist (I heard of blacks in mississippi proudly singing dixie and plenty of people there waving confederate flag and having lots ofb lackf friends). Now, I wouldn't say that on a balance northerners are "worse" or anything like that. I am just saying that there are two sides to every story, and you shouldn't assume the position of one side when you are trying to describe what those sides are.

Earlier in his Presidency, Lincoln had considered colonizing blacks in Africa or even South America, but by the end of his life he had come to realize whites would have to learn to live with blacks. In fact, the last speech he gave was about extending voting rights and full citizenship to freed slaves.
No, a great many white southerners today are not racist, especially the younger people.
