I used to be ashamed because I was half German when I was a stupid kid.
I may still be stupid, but I am not a kid, any longer, so no shame.

You are so fixated on Trump.
There is more to life than that bad, bad man.

Ashamed? No. The world is a messed up place.

However, am I disappointed...

...that some of the history we are taught gives us a distorted image of British figures, only focusing on the good?

...in the government and classist systems?

...in the ongoing racism and overall prejudice?

...in our education system in general?

...that we don't talk enough about how some of the greats are actually just hacks?

...in the devaluation and contempt held against the arts despite our active consumption of media?

...in the lack of support for students struggling if they do not fit into a box of what a struggling student should be?

...in overly high and out of touch expectations from the job market?

...that politicians often don't actually care and just want power, so they'll just say the most popular thing to win votes, flip-flopping positions and coming across as insincere?

Yes.

I think we're always going to have problems and bias, but all we can do is try to improve as much as possible and accept that our roots are rotten yet we still grow. We can't change the events of history, but we can change the ones unfolding to a certain extent. Anyway, I should get some rest and then get back to work. Sorry if you respond to this by asking a question and I don't reply for a while.

Ive used that "you werent alive then" argument myself. Used it both opposite situations.

Americans are prone to national vanity.

You run into individuals who go over board with jingoism about how we are the greatest country ever.

And you run into individuals who go overboard with how we are the worst people ever.

Both povs are vanities.

And in both cases I will point out that "you werent alive then so you had nuthin to do with it. So why be proud/ashamed about it?".

But for folks in between you do have to admit that you/me/everyone identify with your whatever...family country company etc.

But even then you end up breaking even emotionally because there is plenty in both columns of most countries- debit and credit. And the more there is in one column the more tends to be the opposite column as well. So it tends to balance out. A powerful nation like ancient Rome, or like the modern the US, or the UK. Will have more in both the credit and in the debit columns than the average country. Just be aware of history. And try to get histrionic about history, either way.

No, Trump only told his adoring worshipers that he wanted America to improve, but all he really wanted to personal aggrandizement, and to please the guy holding his leash, Putin.

If only that could be the case. Trump is now trying to make a comeback, and has at least half the Republican party fanatically devoted to him personally. I dare not divert my attention, nor should anyone else. Especially since quite a few of his disciples thinks he's Jesus on his second coming.

He lost a lot of support when he had the Capitol Hill brain fart.

Look at it this way.
You have 4 years of the Democrats in power.
4 years is a long time, for us oldies.
Enjoy it.

Also, at this stage, there is little reason to believe that he will have a chance of being elected in 4 years time.
All that the Democrats have to do is a reasonable job in governing the country.
Why stress out when you don't have to?

There's a saying about Presidential elections: Democrats fall in love, Republicans fall in line. The GOP will follow Trump into the abyss if he gets the nomination.

Uhhh.......yeah. Like there are parts of thie countries history I don't even know. I thought they gave a well rounded education in school but yet I keep learning all these things that I never even heard about in school. So for sure makes me question the whole freaking thing..and just makes it look like this country has acted like a monster.

So no wonder some of the rest of the world isn't so pro-american. Like I swear our country is being treated like an unpredictable dragon by the rest of the world, And well I am not so sure the rest of the world is wrong for that, because that is exactly what the U.S is like. Like man I almost would ask the U.N to intervene if they had any kind of means to do that.....because f*ck the country I thought I grew up is is turning upsidedown and sideways and all about and I don't even know what to do with myself in it anymore.

A non-sequitur in the sense I was saying you have nothing to worry about, for the next 4 years, and probably for the 4 years after that.

Feeling ashamed of my country is sort of part of the culture of the country itself. It's been this way since colonial times. I guess I feel "ashamed of it" that way as an internalized thing. It's not that there's nothing to be ashamed of. There's PLENTY, and lately it's been rapidly getting worse instead of getting better. But I don't think I should be the one to be ashamed of any of it. I was always at odds with all this stuff. By the time I was learning to appreciate the country for the good things it had going for it, those things basically vanished. I feel like this has become a hostile place.

I do feel somewhat ashamed (for lack of a better word) for being so alienated from my own country though. I feel like, ideally at least, people should strive to contribute to their own communities. I just don't see how I could possibly do that though. It's like wanting to help an alcoholic who really doesn't want to be helped. Better just leave them alone and do your own thing. If it weren't for the fact that my parents live here (and I can live with them for free), I would most likely be living somewhere else.

Seriously, in this sort of context, I am usually spot on.
People just choose not to acknowledge it.
People have always underestimated me.
