Why do so many immigrants come to the US if it's racist?

I am talking about 10 years ago -- that is when I was in India.

Are immigrants just be suckered? But since you think they would notice all the racism according to the media, and social media, as it's not that hard to find, then would is suckering them then, if that's the case?

Because US is a free country where we are allowed to believe anything we want and have our own religion or no religion without getting punished by law. Plus it's better to be poor in the US than in 3rd world countries because even the poor have basic housing and a running fridge and water and electric and we have welfare programs for low income people. We don't have any restrictions like the UK does and Canada and Australia. You basically have to be rich to move to those countries or just simply be married to someone who is from there. That is the case in the UK anyway.

Plus even if we are a wage labor country and a have slave wages, this wouldn't be any different to those from 3rd world countries because this is the norm to them and the US is better than where they are from. They are thankful for what they can have here they wouldn't be able to have back in their home country.

There are a lot of immigrants through family reunions, I believe, and our refugee intake is generous, compared to our population, I believe.
I think they were talking about increasing the qualification of new immigrants, however.

Is that still a thing, in America?
If so, that adds validity to my comments about America being a lot more racist than Australia.

Again, in other countries they probably get shot by the cops too.

The OP was asking why do people move to the US. So yes, they do look at the statistics. If they know people get shot by the cops both in their own country and in the US, but in their own country they get shot a lot more often, then why would incidents in the US be stopping them?

Speaking of police brutality, in India the cops are horrible. Its part of their "job" that they would beat up anyone that is in trouble. Same goes for Singapore: I heard that cops in Singapore beat someone up for spitting on the street or something.

Someone did this to my uncle, he met a woman and they were in love and after their marriage, it turned out the whole thing was an act. She only wanted to get some green card to become a US Citizen and the only way to become one was to marry someone from the US and she used my uncle for it. He was very hurt and never again he wanted to get married. I guess that explains his odd relationships with women; never lived with one ever again, and would treat them like a friend than a partner. He did meet one woman and they seemed to be together the longest and they did lot of trips together, he even got a dog because she had one and was a doggy lover. But they never moved in together. The woman was also a divorcee.

When he found out he had a blood disorder and it's genetic, he really decided "I am never having kids and I am not going to get married anyway." He is also the only adult child in my mom's family who didn't have children. He remained childfree. I don't think he ever wanted kids anyway and he finally had an excuse to not have any to justify it without feeling any guilt. If anyone wonders why he doesn't want kids, he has a disease that is inherited is why and he doesn't want to pass it onto them or have them carry it and pass it onto their child and they get it.

It's a scummy thing to do to use someone like that just to become a citizen. In the UK that is an illegal thing to do I've read.

Because their countries are a lot more racist than US is. Think of "untouchables" in India. That seems a lot more racist than anything you would see in the US. Yet nobody talks about India being racist, people only talk about US being racist.

Ironically, the very fact that there is so much talk about US being racist is an indication that it is not so racist. Because the people that like to talk about it are the liberals.

But if the the people are the same race as the police and government in their own country, than racism doesn't matter since they would be treated the same therefore, unlike in the US, right?

I know it did, but Soviets did more. And Americans don't seem to realize that.

This an aside to that observation, but if most Americans don't realize that is it fair to expect them to be aware of how deeply ingrained institutional racism is in their society? (Or throughout the west more broadly.)

As far as the institutional racism in America, they tend to exaggerate it. As far as everywhere else, they haven't thought about it basically.

I think they assume that both good things (such as freeing the world from Hitler) as well as bad things (such as racism) are all American -- and this is a false assumption on both accounts.

One thing that is very telling is that a lot of American maps just have America on it and thats it. In Russia I never saw such a thing, Russian map had eastern and western hemisphere displayed side by side.

Same with history. I was in Russia first 8 grades and I did high school in America. In American high school I had just 1 year of world history and the rest of the time just American history. In Russia they had world history and Russian history side by side every year.

As far as racism, in American history classes they talked about racism A LOT. I would say they were pretty much obsessed about it. Same goes for American English classes, as well as much of the rest of the humanity classes. But it was all America focused. So no, they probably haven't heard about 4 centuries of European racism that you talked about. But as far as American racism they heard plenty, probably too much. So its no wonder they wrongly assume America is the most racist country in the world, they just repeat what they were taught. One question that doesn't seem to occur to them is that if America was truly racist, why would it put all this liberal propaganda into the classroom?

I think America's biggest problem is not racism, but lack of education. And no, I don't mean that lack of education makes you racist. It is often quite the opposite. Think of "diversity specialist" that was hired by Metropoliten opera ( https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/25/arts ... ficer.html ). Now, think of what other country they would do something like that? That right there shows that America is not one of the most racist countries, not by far. But it also shows something else. That Americans have no appreciation for the classic art since they don't seem to realize that other things -- such as actual performance skills -- could be more important than diversity, particularly in a place such as that.

Thinking that "diversity is the most important thing in metropolitan opera" and thinking that "Americans freed the world from Hitler" sort of feels similar to me. Both is basically about thinking that what they heard in school is all that matters -- and of course in school they only heard about America and racism.

Well, in India there is a cast system. So the ones from "untouchable" class basically face worse racism in India than they would in the US.

Now, if you say "what about countries other than India", then I sort of see your point, but then still the question should be rephrased. It should be phrased as "why do they immigrate to another country despite racism" as opposed to "why do they immigrate to America despite racism". Because the racism would be at any other country, not just America.

That might be true, but Australia is also a Western country. Basically, the only countries that might be less racist than America are other Western countries. If you look at anything else (whether it be Africa, Asia, Middle East or even Eastern Europe) it would all be more racist.

Now, the immigrants we are talking about aren't going to worry about comparing racism in America to racism in Australia since the racism they are used to is far worse than either one of those.

Wow, I am so sorry this happened to him. I really hope he reconsiders his decision, but then again maybe its too late -- is he supposed to be really old since you are probably in your 50-s from what I remember and he is your uncle?

I think the most logical reaction to that kind of experience is to only marry fellow citizens. The fellow citizens won't have anything to "gain" by deception, since they are already citizens. But then I understand that fear is often not logical. Such as the fact that I was bitten by the dog when I was 6 caused me to be afraid of dogs ever since. I just wish he could direct it to an appropriate source, but oh well.

As far as blood disorder, even if he does pass it to his children, its not the end of the world. I mean, he himself was able to live an okay life despite the blood disorder (other than being deceived of course). So if he himself isn't wishing he was never born, why would he think that bringing someone else in his situation into the world would be such a bad thing?

How were they able to make it illegal in the UK? Is it

a) They forbade marriage to foreigners altogether? But, if so, what would they do if the foreigner happens to be sincere?

Or

b) They have some ways of testing the sincerity of the foreigner? If so, how do they do that?
