Isn't that kind of thing more common with the healthcare system in the US? Doctor's seem to be less restricted by what they can or cannot describe and the system seems to be more about profit than patients, versus say, a national health service run by government.

I don't know much about US healthcare except that they tend to overtreat, which I would think has to be dangerous. And my knowledge of UK healthcare is rather old, but includes a surgeon killing a patient with a botched operation (the firm gave him a severe warning but covered up the deed), the amputation of the wrong body part, doctors misdiagnosing and therefore mis-prescribing, parking patients on somewhat dangerous medications for way too long. Usually it's masked incompetence. I suppose everybody makes mistakes.

But is there even such a thing as a competent faith healer?

Have all kinds quick quips and remarks... but sometimes being an ear, or being supportive might be something I might consider towards the OP .Especially if the OP has been a long time member here ...?

I was in two minds about posting, and will cease and desist if the OP asks us atheists to. In my defense, I'm a Christian of sorts, in the sense that Gandhi was a Hindu but also (in his own words) a Muslim, a Jew, and a Sikh. I've always liked Jesus. And I don't think I said anything disrespectful about the OP. And this is the PPR section. But maybe you're talking about somebody else, or something else.

It can definitely happen also, within national health services since the doctor's in such systems are often overworked and underpaid relative to international levels of payment for their work in private, or a mixture of state and private work.

People definitely do get parked on medications unnecessarily also, in national healthcare services, although there are moves to combat that recently with 12 monthly (minimum) medication reviews where medications can be taken away due to not being needed anymore for example.
