I wonder if the original actually said "virgin", and then the Jews changed the Hebrew later to "young woman" just to spite the Christians.[/quote]

yeah we do crap like that all the time

actually the oldest manuscript of Isaiah is the dead sea scrolls copy dated 100 B.C.
very sneaky indeed :)

 Matthew could have been referencing a another prophecy not contained in the cannon.

If Jesus only had Mary's DNA, then how do you account for the beard?

Males have hormones that allow lots of facial hair to grow. This would have undoubtedly been included in Jesus' genetic code. But the real reason Jesus wore a beard had to do with the customs strictly held by the Jews at that time. Jesus, born a Jew, “came to be under law” and he fulfilled the Law. (Galatians 4:4; Matthew 5:17) Like all other Jews, Jesus was dedicated to Jehovah God from his birth, by reason of the Law covenant, and was under obligation to keep the whole Law, including the prohibition on shaving the extremity of the beard. Also, at the time that Jesus was on earth, the Roman custom was beardlessness. Therefore, if Jesus had been beardless, he would have been challenged as being either a eunuch or a Roman. Significantly, a prophecy concerning Jesus’ suffering states: “My back I gave to the strikers, and my cheeks to those plucking off the hair.” — Isaiah 50:6.

I suppose that it could have been a fake beard.

Mary was a rape victim.

She was told by the angel that the deed had already been done and that she was pregnant with god's child.

Jeez, if you are going to get done over by God Almighty then you might as well get to enjoy it!

the whole virgin thing is a failed translation anyhow...

virgin = maid

as in a young girl working as a servant - not as in a woman who hasn't had sex.

There is an external source that mentions "a rabble rouser named Jesus was executed with two theives today."
Si he had a short local rap sheet. But thats about it.

So he existed.
He probably was a normal kid with a normal pair of married parents.
Who knows - they might well have been named Mary and Joseph.

The virgin birth thing most likely got tacked on ninety years later as a wonder story to help pedal the fledgling faith

Virgin birth was common among dieties back then.

Zeus's daughter Athena sprang out of her dad's head one day as a fully grown woman.
So Zeus was the ultimate "virgin mary" when it comes to miraculous births.

When was the immaculate conception thing first mentioned. When was it first written?

The Romans had their Caesars that were mortal men but divine gods in human form.
If you were worshipping JC then maybe the whole resurrection thing and the miracles and everything are not quite enough to compete with the Roman God in mortal form.

What to do?

Tack on a story about being born from God and bingo you have a human God equal to the powerful Roman Caesar and you have a better claim. I think it was in effect a case of one-upmanship.
OK you have a man that is a God well we do too and not only was his Father the God but he was also so divine he died and was resurrected and healed people and everything. Beat that!

I doubt the whole immaculate conception theory was around until well after he had died.

I think the tacked on Idea, is most likely.
The solider and rape stories smack of libel.
Although yanking believers around has it own pleasures
it does not add to the dialogue.

Yes and though I may have sounded a little flippant, i don't think it was for bad means or from carelessness. I think that there were probably a lot of things in which the fledgling Christian faith in order to become what it is to make it palatable and viable.
I would not believe that hanging it on inconsistency or damning it for not being 100% true in all respects is fair or necessary

exactly Al
There is no reason to believe that Jesus was not a nice man from family.
the idea that his followers add the deification and virgin birth etc. I think is the best fit.

Adnap:

As you may have suspected, I was not there. Neither were any of those who have reported it or commented on it. We do not even have Mary and Joseph's sworn statements.

My lawyer grandfathers would point out that this is hearsay evidence.

On the virgin birth question, even DNA samples from all concerned would not be helpful.

All that is possible here is, essentially, a National Enquirer poll: Do you think Prince William should convert to Islam?

I do not do that kind poll.

Technically she was a virgin for Jesus's birth, she lost her virginity sometime later because Jesus did end up having younger siblings so she and Joseph had kids sometime after Jesus's birth.
