This I can not argue against. However, it is seemingly futile to be involved in politics because of the impossibility of making any actual difference. Even if you assume we have fair elections (which I would dispute) one individual is less than negligible in the political process, and when it's not election time politicians do as they please without regard to their constituents. I can have no influence over how my country is run, so why should I take the time and effort to be informed on all of the issues?

You could still be involved like Karl Marx or Thomas Paine were. If the government is so bad, promote a change of regime until somebody listens (I suggest moving to a foreign country first. I plan for Australia.)

If you can get past the biggest piece of brainwashing that you ever heard in your life - ie, what I just quoted, you'll probably see that it does add up and they are talking about some pretty significant issues that can have a very heavy-handed effect on your future. Not saying that you have to analyze all sides of issues and get a real in depth understanding of what the long term effects would be - its just preferable if you want to know that you're beliefs are correct and up-and-up with reality. Everything you said right there though is pretty much the cop out that people give when they generally just don't like anything and want a catchy and popular excuse as to why they don't follow the news or choose to vote (well, unless they're anarchist, communist, or something generally pretty fringe).

Here is a man who had a vision and got used (to steal Gore's votes for W) and abused (green party=druggies). But his quotes are short, well thought and describe a liberating paradigm.

Why? Should all citizens have an interest in the way that their cars are made or their bread is baked? I think not, and have heard no arguments to say they should. Why is politics much different?

So, we should spend our entire lives protesting an imperfect government instead of looking at more pressing concerns, such as family, friends, and other greater uses of our time? Look at Karl Marx or Thomas Paine, did they *really* change society? They altered a few things certainly, but DC was never perfect and England never unliveable, and Marx's ideas have only been used by murderers anyway. There is no proud legacy of change to really point to.

Yes, and yes! When buying a car, they should research various features they are interested in (reliability, price, resale value, mpg, safety, etc). Otherwise, they will end up paying more money than they need to for a car they don't want. Same might be true for bread - there are differences between the products. When reading about the negative health effects of white bread, I decided that it is something that should generally be avoided ... that is more about the milling process than how it is baked, but maybe more people should investigate a product that is a cornerstone of their diet? I think so.

Politics are not so different. Although the act of voting is a collectivist practice that dilutes the decision making power of any one individual, it can result in significant decisions that have an impact on people's lives.

You know, there was a time where it didn't matter if the candidate you are voting for was a Democrat or a Republican. But nowadays, you the voter, have to declare yourself either a Democrat or a Republican. But, I'm just an undecided Independent. I don't care what party the candidate is in, as long as he/she is the most likeable candidate in my eyes, I will vote for them.

I have trouble standing with either party too. I would go for the constitution party except they have an isolationist philosophy I don't care for. Republicans and Democrats all seem fairly liberal this election, so it's kinda like choosing between shrimp and pork at a buffet. I'd vote for the Liberal Party in Australia, but not for the liberals.

No idea what that's supposed to mean in reference to me or my post but I'll have to remember that listing a lot of quotes from one candidate or another as if to imply that the original poster doesn't already have their own personal and well thought-out take on the issues very nicely and effectively implies that it must be true (at least for people who are more emotional thinkers and less analytical which is...hmmm...most). Not trying to start a pissing contest or anything but that's not really debate or refutation, its slight-of-hand.

It did seem without context and much to read.
