You wouldn't feel ashamed of crushing ants, would you?
That could be probably the case, if they have free-will a part from being self-aware, then they could choose how much value they would give to human morality, as ethics and morals are exclusively human constructs, not all of them, or perhaps none would be relevant to them.
But we should ask if their capacity would include feelings, empathy and sympathy, to feel some emotional attachment with humans, perhaps as pets.

Has anyone considered the possibility that we may already be within the singularity. Within the matrix to say. Can we be certain that we our selves are not the A.I. which an A.I. built that was constructed by an intelligence? Then again, what is artificial anyway? An artifice, art. Something built or constructed. Containing structure. We are artifacts of the Universe. And we are all artisans. Within an infinite universe even fiction can become reality. And probably is. This line of thinking seems to explain many phenomena.

I suppose if, at some point in the future, I tried to aim an EMP blast at a sufficiently powerful installation, it would send one of its servants to kill me but that's only acting on utility theory. The number crunching involved does not imply thought.

Well, I believe that computers have not gone that far to simulate accurately the complexity of a human brain yet, and if they will someday is something interesting to wonder about, currently, no computer has cognitive functions.

Uh huh. You're definition of cognitive functions (since you have failed to elucidate your terms) requires what? A particular treatment of others and the environment? Ignoring possible objections on the fact that your definition of cognitive function presupposes a particular system of value for the animal, you seem to be suggesting that to have cognitive function you need to make "optimal" choices.
That isn't the definition of "cognitive function"; it's completely absurd.
I find your sarcastic use of the word "cognition" in order to make a trite commentary on the state of the world unamusing.

In principle, yes. In practice, probably not. That's why I believe in mind-body dualism.
BTW, most computers in common use are of the von Neumann architecture. In other words, glossing over a lot of details, they have a distinct processor unit, distinct memory unit, and buses to connect the two. The entire process of computation is to fetch instructions and data from memory, execute instructions with data, return result to memory. (Brilliant in its time, but not very efficient now that we have parallel computing.)
A model of computation that more closely resembles its biological answer is neural network computing. Again glossing over a lot of detail, there are units that act like neurons, where they have inputs from other neurons which are added up and compared to an adjustable threshold value in order to determine whether a neuron 'fires' and gives inputs to other neurons. Here, memory and cognition are closely linked, as in animals. The real advantage with artificial neurons is that they are made of such general components they can perform a very wide variety of tasks. They will be a staple of any effort to provide a general AI.

hardly true. We have several levels of technology left to unpack, starting with the strong force, working our way down to the weak force, and then gravity, and then, potentially tachyons.
Each of those layers is an entire set of technological evolutionary parameters even larger than technology derived from
electricity.
It would be more meaningful to hope that we will solve the problems and quit being violent as a species.

That is not the first mention of the idea of singularity or technological singularity by a long shot.
A minor version of a technological singularity might only require for instance that we create self replicating construction robots. The effect being that the only cost to build anything else would be the cost of designing it.

The original ideas about technological singularities date back to the 1970s. The initial idea was exactly what the gravitational singularity + technology implies. If you could create, harnass, and control a singularity, you at that point become essentially the equivalent of "God". In the most literal of senses, since you can create designer basement universes which have time flows outside of our own time flows so you can build the universe in our own subjective time,
have billions of years go by in its time, and then enter the new universe or interact with it once its come to design fruition.
Others, most prominently Ray Kurzweil, define the singularity as a period of extremely rapid technological progress. Kurzweil argues such an event is implied by a long-term pattern of accelerating change that generalizes Moore's Law to technologies predating the integrated circuit and which he argues will continue to other technologies not yet invented. Critics of Kurzweil's interpretation consider it an example of static analysis, citing particular failures of the predictions of Moore's Law.

Robin Hanson proposes that multiple "singularities" have occurred throughout history, dramatically affecting the growth rate of the economy. Like the agricultural and industrial revolutions of the past, the technological singularity would increase economic growth between 60 and 250 times. Depending on who gets such technology first and how it is implemented, and what version of "singularity" we are talking about, there is indeed a very large potential for dystopian singularities, if you assume that current economic or social values still hold.
On the other hand, models of assorted versions of technological singularities tend to show the opposite; what happens is the first real chance for absolute egalitarianism; since competition becomes increasingly meaningless and since anybody can reap all of the benefits without that impacting anybody else.

The problem with this idea is that intelligence is an evolutionary trait which happens slowly over time which we still don't really understand. There are practical quantum limits to how intelligent a system can become unless we obtain technological singularities of the literal sort. And why would humans build machines smarter than themselves? there is little compelling evidence to support the idea that theres any benefit for us to do this.
A more realistic understanding and exploration of intelligence explosion derives from looking at human intelligence in terms
of its current efficiency and use socially. Currently 99.9 percent of human intelligence is wasted on sheer drivel, infotainment, propaganda wars, and chit chat. An intelligence explosion could occur within the human community, by simply organizing society to reward collaborative thinking and group process, rather than using mass media to keep everybody as stupid as possible.
