I sometimes wonder if neuroscience will ever advance to the point where we can tell with absolute certainty if someone is telling the truth. It would revolutionize the legal system if we could, even though the implications are a little frightening. I would certainly feel a bit better imposing capitol punishment if I was certain of guilt, in fact I'd feel better about imposing any sort of punishment. Even with today's systems though, I have no moral problems with capitol punishment so long as the highest standards of proof are adhered to.

Artificially inflated costs, it could be much cheaper.

Only if you're willing to sacrifice whatever pathetic semblance of justice and legitimacy such a barbaric practice might have.

Out little sadistic friend obviously doesnt know what he talks about. The day he would be wrongly accused of a crime he will thank heaven that we have a justice system where appealing is possible and where we dont treat those in a court case like dirt. Not that I wish it upon anyone, but some people clearly minimalise the impact of prison life and seem to think a TV in your cell will make life comfortable and joyful again as if you were never punished. Lot of people are driven by vengeance, not realising wrongful convictions can happen to ANYONE, but many people will only realise the setup of our justice system once they or a relative need that same justice system to get themselves out of prison.

Capital punishment is only found in rather uncivilized parts of the world.
Taking a human life for whatever reason sucks.
Much can be said on how and why people should be rectified rather than cruelly punished or killed but I want to leave it at this: capital punishment is crude, cruel and a sign of a lack of civilizaton in society.

Agree 100 percent. Ironically far right parties in your and my native country (I am from Belgium, where the Vlaams Belang is doing more or less the same as Wilders is doing in Netherlands) are the ones who would want the death penalty back in Europe, ironically while saying how uncivilised the countries applying Sharia law are. The pot and the kettle...

The USA is in great company as country retaining capital punishment: Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Pakistan, China, North Korea, Iran. What a great company to be in, party party :P Although the country with the largest number of executions per capita, is Singapore.

Like a life sentenced to rape or be raped can be any less barbaric.

Sadistic... that's a funny word for you to use. You're ok sentencing people to years of rape and abuse in prison, and I'm sadistic. Yeah. I do know that I'd much rather die than to be somebody's b***h for any period of time. You go ahead and turn a blind eye with everyone else while patting yourself on the back swelling with pride.

I'd much rather do one of two things. Either kill murderers and rapists no matter the cost, or give up the death penalty and put that money to use stopping all the rape in prison. Because I think torture and rape are more barbaric acts than painlessly killing someone, and it makes me sick that society and the prisons turn a blind eye to it making lame excuses. I guess you'd prefer to live your life someone's b***h than to die, maybe you'd even enjoy it, and that's a ok for you, but keep your non-barbaric practices away from me and my body, thankyou.

My step father was in prison, and I can honestly tell you it f****d him up mentally and I'd seriously rather die.

The latter is obviously the more humane choice.

Obviously. Too bad no one cares, they'll just pretend we're non-barbaric and feel good about themselves.

I am against the death penalty completely. Even if the person being executed is gulity of murder(s), the state has still committed murder by executing him/her. How does that bring about justice? Executing someone who has committed murder is morally questionable. I believe it makes the state as much of a murderer as the criminal.

I am against capital punishment for six reasons.

1. I don't think the state has the right to kill a human being.
2. It isn't a deterrent.
3. It doesn't cost much money to feed people in jail cheap food.
4. Sometimes the wrong person is executed.
5. If you want revenge, life in prison is a fate worse than death. Ted Kaczynski admits that he'd rather be dead then where he is right now.
6. People like Ted Kaczynski and Anders Behring Breivik need to be kept alive so they can be studied. We could learn a lot about human psychology from them.

I don't understand capital punishment. I see it as revenge. I think killing them escapes their misery from being locked away. Some inmates who decide to die after giving up is like committing suicide so it's not really a punishment then is it? I have even read somewhere how some inmates will purposely kill another inmate just do they can get the death penalty because they are afraid of suicide. I read about an inmate killing his cell mate just so he can get it because he was too afraid of suicide and he did want to kill himself. This was decades ago. I can't remember where I got this info at.

I think it's more of a punishment when they are locked away forever and their activities are restricted and they are confined to a cell 23 hrs a day.

Plus putting an inmate to death costs two million dollars and it's a lot cheaper than that to house an inmate. I got this info at deathpenaltyinfo.org

Plus sometimes innocent people die from it because they were falsely accused of the crime they didn't commit. Sometimes things look ugly so the evidence falsely shows they did it and sometimes they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. But if I want to look at it another way, at least they are free from the misery in prison and will no longer be locked away. Their sh***y life is over.

I also see this as a double standard. Killing is wrong but our states and federal are allowed to do it? If someone murders my husband or child, can I please kill that person myself? It be a lot cheaper and save my state a lot of money. But why must they kill the person for me years later? It be a lot cheaper if I did it for them. There, now there is no double standards.

Not everyone agrees, to begin with.

Most people will have circumstances where they will live with the succotash.

There was a survey a couple of years ago that found that 49% of people in my country support the re-introduction of the death penalty. In 1994 it was 75%. The BNP want to reintroduce capital punishment, too.

Makes me proud to be British

Any country that wants to reinstate it would have to withdraw from the EU due to the Charter of Fundamental Rights ( I could be wrong, two states still have it legal, but I don't think anyone could reintroduce it). That's one good thing about the EU.

EDIT: Dang! I only just realised how old this thread was.

I am against it. There's no logical reason for it, aside from revenge. Doesn't deter, is irreversible, damages the integrity of a society.
