The liberal/conservative paradigm seems very American.
Whilst it is true that governments have turned bad, that have been socialist as per the above examples (Russia & Nazi Germany), the majority of the destruction that was wrought in terms of death count was before the United Nations was formed, which acts as a sizeable deterrent for international terrorism and war crimes perpetrated by different governments across the world.
Most pleasant countries to live in today are more nuanced than either/or in terms of socialism or capitalism.
I.e, a lot of western countries have mixed economies with both welfare distribution and capitalism being employed in their economies.
