@Inuyasha

Did you learn your opinions about evolution from Glenn Beck? They are wrong, like it or not. The difference between your opinions and mine on this subject is I can present physical evidence to support my view, and that same evidence falsifies your view, like it or not.

As for macroevolution: many of what you call "bridge" species have been found that show the transition from one type of creature to another, such as from fish to land animals, from dinosaurs to birds, and from apes to human. Look up "transitional fossils" on wikipedia for some examples.

Yes of course dog breeds differ significantly from a cat, but about forty or fifty million years ago they had a common ancestor. Since they have split apart from a common ancestor so long ago, it is ridiculous to think that a dog could ever give birth to a cat, or vice versa, yet that is what some creationists claim would be "proof" of evolution. Your argument about single mutations and such creating a new species seems confused. Of course it takes more than one change in one individual organism for a group of creatures to diverge enough from their parent species to be considered a new species , but it is populations that evolve, not individuals. I thought I explained that in a recent post in this thread.

Your post is exactly what I'm talking about: when someone is so very wrong about something like evolution that has SO MUCH proof of so many different types that clearly show it happens, that lessens their credibility on any subject. Basically, if they are so out of touch with reality, and so gullible to swallow lies so easily proven false, it shows limitations either in their intelligence or reasoning skills. That is why I will always vote against any political candidate who thinks teaching creationism in science classrooms is a good idea. Besides spreading lies, what they propose is harmful to America and to humanity.

@TheBicyclingGuitarist:

I am sure you have seen my above quotes of TallyMan's posts, and this is the very kind of thing I am personally hoping we can all work together and reduce even more here on WP:

TheBicyclingGuitarist wrote:

What difference could that possibly make? And then ...

TheBicyclingGuitarist wrote:
They are wrong, like it or not.

Surely you understand basic civility and could have just said you disagree with those opinions and then possibly say why and then possibly offer your own in return ... and then leave that at that. That "like it or not" is essentially the same as "Go stick this in your ear, Motherf***er!", and we all really do need a lot less of that around here.

TheBicyclingGuitarist wrote:

Yeah, be sure the other guy really does go "stick it", eh?

TheBicyclingGuitarist wrote:

Why not just stick to the subject at hand without being concerned about other people's credibility?

TheBicyclingGuitarist wrote:

And that bit of insight from you does what to help us all with the actual subject at hand here in this thread?

TheBicyclingGuitarist wrote:

I will do the same if/when I ever vote, but there is still no need to also trash people here on WP.

My apologies to anyone I offended, especially AngelRho, Inuyasha, and leejosepho.

As is evident, I have quite strong feelings on this subject. While I may have been wrong in how I presented my opinions, I stand by them nonetheless. And for those who disagree, ask yourselves why is it that in a dozen major court challenges to evolution the past forty years or so the creationists have never, not once, been able to present ANY scientific data that either supports their position or falsifies evolution.

In a recent post, I gave specific examples of the falsehoods spread by creationists and how one can easily check these out for oneself. If you want to believe the earth is flat, or whatever, more power to you. In some ways I envy your faith. I can no longer believe the earth is flat, and I'm sorry if some people get offended when I tell them there is lots of evidence it isn't flat after all.

Great post, if I might presume to say so! The "more power to you" part might have been tempered just a bit more, but you are certainly not the only passionate one around here ... and we can all understand that about each other!

Peace.

Actually.. I agree with TBG here... Perhaps he could have said it differently, but I think he had to say it to get his meaning across.. Bible-believers worry for our soul and can't seem to understand why we don't view the Bible as truth. We get frustrated when it's presented as truth and not simply ideology... But that view that you have of us not believing the Bible, that's the same that we have for those who can't acknowledge the proofs of science. The Bible is unsubstantiated, science has been proven time and time again. You think it's scary and unbelievable that we can't place faith in something intangible, we think you're crazy for stubbornly denying the concrete proofs of science.
When we have "debates" about the Bible.. You tell us how wrong we are for not interpreting it right, but expect us to sit back silently when you dispute science with incorrect information.
It's just as frustrating for us as it is for you.

I think we need to see a lot less use of the word "you" around here. The kinds of things you have mentioned certainly do happen "from either side", so to speak, but there really does not need to be so much "taking sides" in the first place and then lumping everyone on "the other side" into "you". I am certainly not personally offended here, and I say that because I know your above statement is completely inaccurate on at least two counts:

1) I do not do the kinds of things you have mentioned;
2) Neither do many of the people within the alleged "you" you have mentioned.

1) Lee, hate to say it buddy, not everything is about YOU.
2) I think I do pretty well with the "In my opinion.." and "I believe.." lingo and you have NEVER heard me say that someone else's belief system is wrong. I will say it isn't logical. I will say I don't agree. Yeah ok, once I called a book crap... and I shouldn't have.. I would say that when I lose my cool, I'm pretty good about owning up to it an apologizing.. so, with that said... I think I'm allowed a few ambiguous "you"s...
Get off the high horse of political correctness. If you aren't offended for you, then don't comment.. If someone is offended by something I say, they have every right in the world to call me on it.

To "tisk tisk" me for something you don't even find offense with is..... I don't even know... what the hell is that?

Amen - but with a qualifier.

'Science' is an ongoing project and regularly disproves itself, that is part of it's occaisional beauty. Unfortunately rligions are generally somewhat less self critical and opting for heresy trials akin to that which Lloyd Geering went through with the prespetarian church here in Aotearoa/NZ in the late 60's. He attempted to update the christian faith by denying the resurection, christs especial divinity and even the conventional concept of the existence of god while still claiming to be christian [endeavouring to live in a 'christ' like way].

But actually, I was there hoping you and/or anyone else might take a moment there and consider how anyone at least might be offended by seeing "you" -- a word of specific and direct reference -- in front of a statement completely untrue about him or her. In days past, there have been specific discussions here on WP about how at least some of us literal thinkers just do not understand "you" do not always really mean "you" every time "you" say "you" ...

... and so with us, it is typically best to "only say what you actually mean and to only mean what you actually say"!

Recognized and agreed. But (I feel) to outright deny evolution, carbon dating, and archeological discoveries is just plain ignorant stubbornness.

Stubbornness, maybe, but I would suspect fear over ignorance since much of Christianity is driven by that.

You said that.. but then you went on to list the reasons that this didn't apply to you, therefore I think it completely reasonable that I confirm that no, I was not talking about you. I feel that I established I was talking about "Bible-believers", or people who believe that the Bible is undeniably true.. Therefore the "you" referred to those people and I think that was quite obvious.

I do not think that a mod would have corrected me on the usage of "you' in that statement, especially as I was trying very hard to peaceably plainly state different perspectives on the issue and admitted and validated that it was a frustrating topic from both sides.

There was nothing wrong with my statement and for you to pick out a word that you didn't find offense with and "correct me" on it's usage was (IN MY OPINION) a ridiculous move on your part.

What a mod might have done is not the point. Rather, to whom were you even speaking at that time?

Again, the point there was to suggest we might all be cautious about use of the word "you" ...

... and especially when it is not clear as to which "you" among the great number of people here is being addressed at the time.

I had first thought of directly pointing out the fact of the adjective "ignorant" having no business there apart from tossing a slam at stubborn people, but then I opted to instead just attempt to divert its impact a bit.

Edit: In any case, yes: Ignorance -- lack of simple knowledge -- often lies behind fear.
