‘This is what they call liberation’: Ukrainians condemn Russians from ruins
23 hours ago

Weeks of attacks from Russian forces have left villages near the eastern Ukrainian city of Izyum in ruins as residents find themselves displaced from their homes – or trapped inside.

The villages have been under constant bombardment since the invasion started with some residents admitting they feared annihilation.

Little has been reported about the situation in Izyum itself but Mayor Valerii Marchenko said much of it was destroyed during intense fighting.

The mayor escaped from Izyum on March 13 – along with several other residents, on a bus convoy.

Mr Marchenko estimated some 20,000 people were still trapped in the city.

After Biden’s latest verbal blunder, Noah Rothman makes the case in Commentary for POTUS to pipe down. “Biden undermined the entire premise of his speech with one aggressive adlib: ‘For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power,’” he argues. “It was throat-clearing that could only further destabilize the situation in Eastern Europe, as evidenced by an administration-wide effort to clean up after the president’s intemperate remarks. While it’s sometimes welcome, it is not the president’s job to be a beacon of moral clarity. His role is to establish America’s national interests in as discrete a manner as possible and behave in ways that advance those objectives. Time and again throughout this crisis, Biden has let his mouth get in the way of that imperative.”

Meet the Female-Only Carpool Keeping Ukrainian Women and Children Safe in Poland

"Ella Jarmulska is going the extra mile to help refugee women and children find safety in Poland amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The 38-year-old mom of one is the driving force behind Women Take the Wheel (Kobiety Za Kółko), a grassroots travel initiative transporting vulnerable refugees away from the Ukrainian border to the comparative safety of mainland Poland.

As the name suggests, it's a carpool service that is staffed entirely by women for women.

"We're all fitting it around our own jobs and our own family lives," Jarmulska tells PEOPLE about the humanitarian ride-sharing, which started after she completed a successful refugee fundraiser in the Polish capital of Warsaw yet "still felt unfulfilled.""

Dan Nielsen: Ukraine war destablizes fruit market
BY DAN NIELSEN 12 hrs ago
"... Because it was affected by frost and hail storms this year, the Argentinean crop of apples and pears is smaller and of lower quality than normal.

But the South American tree fruit supply is substantial. The war in Ukraine already has disrupted life for millions of people in eastern Europe, including their access to fresh fruit.

It’s not a stretch to say the war’s effects could spread all the way to apple and pear growers in the U.S., including those in Michigan. It’s possible there could be an oversupply of apples and pears everywhere in the world — except in Ukraine and Russia.

Local growers, because they tend to produce high-quality fruit, may not see any downward price pressure from such a glut. And maybe, just maybe, peace will be restored in Europe by the time local pears and apples are ready to harvest this year."

^ I think fresh fruit markets won't be as affected as wheat.
I'm especially concerned for Middle East - traditionally, a lot of wheat is eaten there, most countries are dependent on food imports and many are politically unstable.

I got a jug of apple juice from the local food bank awhile back and there was no label on it.Sometimes they are damaged or removed. It was the best tasting apple juice I’ve ever had.Not watery and with a rich apple flavor.I was curious where it came from ,so looked for the country of origin stamp and it was Ukraine.Hands down the best ever.No idea how it wound up at a food bank in rural Arkansas.

Sounds delicious & its country of origin is quite interesting.

Indeed, there has got to be a story there. :D

Playing in Google found:

"Ukrainian Fruit Juices Suppliers and Manufacturers"
https://www.go4worldbusiness.com/suppli ... uices.html

and, more importantly,

" Ukrainian Horticultural Association (UHA) represents a group of export-oriented fruit and vegetable growers with similar values and strategies. It is the knowledge centre of horticultural business of Ukraine, focusing on opening new markets around the world and improving quality and competitiveness of Ukrainian produce. Most of our growers are Global G.A.P. certified."
https://fruit-ukraine.org/eng/

Another page of above website,

"Each fifth organic roll in the EU is baked from Ukrainian wheat, making it one of the key suppliers of organic cereals to the EU. Ukraine is also exporting significant volumes of organically certified vegetable oils, soybeans, oilmeals, apple juice concentrate and frozen berries. Recently Ukrainian suppliers started exporting value-added and ready to consume organic products in retail packaging such as grouts, breakfast cereals, vegetable oils, tomato paste, etc. Nearly 100% of the organic produce is exported to the EU and Switzerland although some volumes are also supplied to the USA and Canada. All organically products are certified according to EU organic standards by authorized certifiers."
https://fruit-ukraine.org/eng/organic-produce/

Also on site above, a page worth looking at, NOTE lines at arrow emoji

" Exports
Being the largest country in Europe by territory and the most fertile country on Earth(Ukraine owns 33%of the world’s most fertile chernozem black soils), Ukraine supplied most of the food consumed in the Former USSR.
After the break-up of the USSR, Ukrainian farmers focused on commodities but are slowly moving up the value chain ladder."

"Why Ukrainian Fruits are so Special and Tasty?

Here are some scientifically confirmed facts:

Ukraine is a very dry, and, consequently, sunny country. In the key production regions annual precipitation averages from 400 to 700mm and most it comes outside of vegetation season. Moreover, thanks to its high altitude, there could be up to 15 hrs of sunlight per day in many regions of Ukraine! Thus, our fruits and vegetables are exposed to much more sun than in other countries leading to better BRIX;
Ukraine has a much greater variation between day and night temperatures than other European countries, helping to develop better colouring of fruits and deeper taste!
We use less chemicals to protect our fruits and vegetables than most other European countries thanks to our dry climate, thus, our fruits are healthier and cleaner!
 We could grow premium quality of nearly every variety of apples thanks to the very warm climate with great colouring possibilities!
 Firmness of Ukrainian apples to sustain long distance transportation is hard to match thanks to these climatic benefits and proper technologies used.
There will be more apples coming from Ukraine every year as most of our orchards are no more than 8-9 years old and we do use the most advanced technologies of production.
While we offer premium quality fruits we could be very price competitive in this category thanks to lower costs of inputs, energy, labour and land.
We have access to deep water ports in the Black Sea and could ship fruits and vegetables nearly anywhere relatively inexpensively."

/\Interesting find.
I hope the farmers in Ukraine can get back to the peaceful and life giving business of growing excellent fruit and veg soon.I used to order seeds off ETSY from a shop in Ukraine and the prices and selection were great and so were the seeds.

BRIX, for those who don't know (I wouldn't know except I grow tropical fruits) is a measure of the sweetness of fruit. A higher Brix is sweeter.

Very interesting, indeed. Thanks, kitesandtrainsandcats and Miss Lizard

Welcome!
And thanks, had thought about looking up what BRIX meant but decided to do that later, now I don't have to. :D

"‘I can’t keep up’: Russia is losing so much military equipment in Ukraine that weapons monitors are overwhelmed
The sheer scale of images of destroyed Russian tanks and military vehicles tell the story of the war so far, writes Richard Hall
12 hours ago"

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 46501.html

"... Even with that potential gap in information, the scale of Russian losses, particularly in the first couple of weeks, was “almost unmanageable” for trackers to fully monitor, said Mr Lee. That has been revealing in many ways.

“I think contrary to what a lot of people expected, we’re talking about near-peer conflict. Because of that, the scale [of Russian losses] is just huge,” he said.

“We’re not talking about counterinsurgency. We’re not talking about a policing operation. We’re not talking about a special operation, quote, unquote. You’re talking about two sides, which are not evenly matched, but not so far off.”

It’s grim work, all agree. The trackers’ work is to document equipment, but none of them forget that each of those tanks or trucks is operated by a human.

“For every killed soldier you see, a family has been torn apart, a gap created that will never be filled,” said Mr Mitzer. “Footage of a tank that suffers a catastrophic detonation looks impressive, but it also results in the end of three lives. Soldiers that probably never wanted this war. Soldiers that have a family and dreams just like you and me.”"

↑ I hope you are not expressing sympathy for those enemy soldiers.

There will be time enough for that after Ukraine wins the war.

There's nothing wrong with that, Fnord, even as the conflict rages on. Love your enemy, even as you plunge your sword into him.
