I remember that too. Also happened in the USA when Rupert Murdoch panicked and deserted Trump when the chips were down.

I just heard the news about Liz resigning. I guess the Tories' only hope now is to call an election, get wiped out, and then wait till Starmer fails to repair Broken Britain. The (real) Tories will be back, but it might take some time. Oh, just a minute, they've decided to try and cling onto power by picking another leader. That may prove problematic for them.

Can you see the problem here??

The 'problem here' for those wanting an early election . . . is that the last one happened in 2019, and we in the UK have fixed term governments that last up to 5 years; unless the government in power decides to call an election before their allotted time is up (as Teresa May did in 2017), or there is a successful vote of no confidence in the government (with last one being held against Labour under James Callaghan in 1979 ~ as lead to the next Conservative government under Margaret Thatcher).

So the last date for an election is January 23, 2025, I believe ~ all going well for the Conservative party . . .

AFAIK the monarch can only veto things, and that's not happened in living memory. Something about causing a constitutional crisis and hastening the abolition of the monarchy I think. My own theory is that the veto is mainly there in case Parliament try to remove the monarch's wallet, or his head. Didn't work out too well for Charles I, but then Cromwell had the army so he was able to do what he liked.

I don't think the royal family give a toss as long as they don't have to suffer personally.

I think it is technically within his power to do that and more, but much like a bee that uses its sting - once he does, that's the end of the monarchy.

Apparently Boris Johnson is going to enter the leadership election to be Prime Minister again. This election will be completed within a week and voting only includes 0.2% of the British public.
