I'm ashamed of us all.
Selfishness isn't arrogant either. It involves looking after oneself preferentially, which to some extent is completely unavoidable.
Preferring to care about my own problems first, rather than some specific person on the other side of the world doesn't imply that I don't care at all about the other person, nor that I think myself objectively more important.
I guess I just have an atypical view on this issue, since my depression and self-hatred cause me to think that I really have no value at all, and others have much more value than I do. I've often wondered why I'm still alive and other, more intelligent, caring, courageous people die every single day. I mean, I'm not contributing anything to the world (nor do I think I'll ever contribute anything to it), so why do I get to keep living, but others (including children who die at a young age) don't?

You are only 23 according to your post and much too hard on yourself. I am now 84 and have not accomplished anything I can see as a worthy contribution to anybody but life is still a fascinating experience and worth the time and trouble. Insults have two ends and must be taken as possibly innocent on the giver's end even if the receiver is offended. I find most religious beliefs incredibly gullible, simple minded and profoundly stupid in the light of modern knowledge. This is taken as insulting by many believers whereas my point of view sees this as mere simple neutral diagnosis. Offense may be taken where it is not intended. I find ruveyn incredibly callous in respect to humanity in general but from his point of view only himself and his local social group deserve special consideration. This seems to me hugely narrow minded and limited but that's how he is made. I doubt anything will change him. He does seem to have a rather decent understanding of scientific concepts.

that sounds like enlightened self-interest to me, like what is being practiced by rich folk who give away most or all of their fortune. this reminds me of my time in a college psych class, where we were discussing different types of psychopathy/sociopathy, i.e., antisocial versus disocial- the former hewing to one's own selfish needs, the latter regarding larger groups of people like families, tribes, societies et al. pursuing exclusionary policies designed to block outsiders from their resources- and the prof described crime families and the upper class, as additional examples of disocial behavior in which outsiders are seen as competitors for resources resulting in the perceived need [by the disocial group] to ruthlessly deal with this outside competition.

Peaceful coexistence is impossible as long as there are people out there who are somehow able to justify the slaughtering of "infidels". If they want to put down their swords, we'll put down our own. But as long as they continue to make themselves into a threat, there can be no peace. If we put down our own, they will continue to kill in the name of their god. If they put down theirs, then there is no need to fight.

There is no denial of the Muslim concept that unbelievers must be punished. But Muslim societies have nevertheless existed where people of different beliefs were tolerated and accepted so it is evident that fanatics may not be the basic cause of the conflicts.. To assume that the present Middle East conflicts are based on religion alone is exceedingly naive and neglectful of the realities.

To assume that most of the conflicts in the middleeast have nothing to do with Islam would be naive also. There have always been wars regarding economic this or power and control that, but since Medina onward there has been religious undertones to the violence of the region. The Imperialism of Babylon, Persia, Macedon, and Rome have nothing to compare with in terms of zeal as some of the fanatics, or "extremists" if you prefer, present. What is worse for the region is when those fanatics are placed in control of a nation.

The ferocities in Israel are driven by the voracious eagerness for expansion underlined by the vile treatment of the original inhabitants. Afghanistan and Iraq are neck deep in control of the massive oil deposits.. The rest is baloney.

If Israel really wanted to expand and kill off the Syrian populace of Gaza, it could easily be done in a single day.

Not at all or just occasionally there's a murder? Turkey would have been a better example if you were going to make one, or even possibly Egypt.

The labeling of the Palestinians in Gaza as Syrians is rather indicative of a rather peculiar mindset indeed.

Such as, say, history. Yeah.
Humans will never have a cohesive "global community", because human "evolution" has largely favored these types of people.
1. Violent, gullible zealots (especially the ones who spreaded the Abrahamic religions)
2. Marauding, bloodthirsty, rapist warriors (European pirates, Vikings, Huns, and dominant tribes in Africa and the Americas)
3. Sociopaths

So, we have Christians, Muslims, drunks, pagans, and Atheists. They are to blame. Let's kill them all.
