Have you ever spent any amount of time in the American South?

Ok, so what percentage of the conservative population do you think they make up?

In the gun-toting pickup driving "Obama's a Muslim" South?
They're synonymous.

Enough to swing elections.

That doesn't make any sense.

So you're saying if its 51% voting republican than its 51% of the US population who has fantasies about a "clash of civilizations" where the US ends up nuking millions of Muslims?

Segue into Special Interest

There has only been one gay-pride parade in Serbia. According to one "participant", he said, "People came from all around to bash f******." I have the video but it has gratuitous violence so it might violate the ToS.

So the skinheads invade and start beating up people. The police came in next with their nightsticks and started clubbing anyone starting a fight. I believe there was one where three policemen mercilessly beat someone who was on the ground. Then they started throwing stuff at the police

Then there was this picture of a gang of skinheads walking down a street and some guy I thought was from the military started firing an assault rifle in the air to warn them what was going to happen if they got close enough. He even pointed it at someone. It was CHAOS...

Tech guy, I am afraid that Bethie is to a large extent right. Although there are good enclaves here where most conservatives are just powdered-bum yuppie jerks (therefore mostly harmless and at least theoretically capable of critical thinking), there are a lot of places in the South where people are a bit...out of touch with reality. Not necessarily stupid, just not altogether "with it."

Can't agree. If anything I'm just seeing more of the same here?

It's just a horrifically ignorant assertion - from the conservatives that I have encountered. Might Southern conservatives be a little rough around the edges? It wouldn't surprise me that much. However its nothing short of amazing when people take a whole political philosophy that consists of roughly half if not slightly better than half of the US population and attribute it to raw ignorance.

When I see this kind of talk coming from left of center I prefer to think its simply catharsis - that they don't fully believe what they're saying - until my bubble and perhaps need to fictionalize a 'benefit of the doubt' to other people gets burst and I have to start seriously wondering - Am I wrong? Are they being bluntly honest when they say that there's no good reason to be a conservative aside from racism, homophobia, or sheer Randian selfishness - or, nearly as bad is it being implied that such reasons might hypothetically exist in odd or extenuating circumstances but still less than 10% are conservative for those reasons and the remaining 90% are in it for the racism, homophobia, and bronze-aged book club stuff?

Quite frankly I just find it terrifying that anyone could imply that they truly believe what they're saying when they'd state that thinking conservatives who've come to their standpoint by firm analysis of reality are so statistically insignificant that they can be ignored. It makes me think - when people need to brainwash themselves - what about their own believes are they trying to paint over or run from so badly that they need to tell themselves tall tales about the other side?

In my experience, they're actually dignified and intelligent people, and I don't think you're giving them enough credit. The thing that people in your situation seem to be failing to understand about the Southern conservative psyche is that anything beyond the boundaries of their own part of the world is something that they look upon with deep and profound suspicion. They don't pretend to understand it, and they just want someone who doesn't try to double-talk them to do something to keep it from leaking over into their lives.

However, if you were to ask them about the gritty details of what happens to be going on in their particular county or anything that practically and substantially has something to do with them, they tend to be more knowledgeable than anyone in more "liberal" regions would even pretend to be. It's just our culture, and if you are going to accuse me of being "ignorant" for pretending to know a little bit about the psyche of my childhood playmates, go right ahead. See where that gets you.

A red-blooded Southerner just doesn't know a whole lot about what branch of Islam that Osama bin whats-his-name happens to be following, and they don't want to know. They see it as a waste of their time and none of their business. It's a little bit like the attitude you see in New Jersey, where people think you're being nosey if you happen to glance through an open doorway into their private rooms, just on a different scale. It's not because of being stupid, but it's just that they like their little corner of the world a lot and feel that they would be a lot happier if everyone else would simply leave them to sort out their own problems and address their concerns in their own way.

And you know, I don't always agree with or get along with them, but I think I understand the people I crawled in the sandbox with a lot better than you do, alright? When I say their "out of touch with reality," I mean that they literally don't see what is going on in Yemen right now as more relevant to their lives than dragons and unicorns up in fairy land. They literally have a sense that these places barely even exist in the world.

I know that this is a hard concept to grasp up there where you know in detail what is going on in distant parts of the globe but haven't even made a hand gesture toward your next door neighbor, but this really is how they are. They have a charming fantasy that there is a divine umbrella hanging over them that protects them from the weird, scary world outside of it. But the way they see it, you're out of your mind because of some of the ways that you think!

Here's the problem I have with all of this - none of the conservatives I know are like this. I would imagine most east coast and west coast conservatives who live in more liberal areas are quite refined because they're used to arguing, they know what they believe, why they believe it, and they do know a lot about what's going on around the world.

I'm not telling you you're childhood playmates don't exist or that I know them better than you do, I'm just sick of being told that I and quite a broad swath of conservatives don't exist because we don't fall into a clean neat intellectual pejorative that can be swept under the carpet and ignored as a sort of genetic antiquity or throwback to an earlier more 'simple' day (and in that I'm really reflecting the contempt that I see aimed by liberals at conservatives rather than stating my own opinion of them).

William...that was truly such an excellent and accurate description, and non-judgmental as well.

I hope it adds light to the conversation.

I don't remember anyone saying "Conservative" is synonymous with the demographic we've been discussing-
the only assertion I've seen made here is that that type of Conservative nevertheless numbers in the millions and has a powerful sway on elections, and due to a general extreme ignorance of and fear of ideas foreign to their immediate world, many many of them would love it if the West undertook a course of military action resulting in the slaughter of millions of Muslims.

Do you remember the shooting of Congresswoman Giffords?
I was at home visiting my parents that day, in a Bible belt town on the KY-TN border. I saw probably five church signs that said something similar to "Good riddance to the evil communist baby-killer". They live 500+ miles north of what would be considered the "deep South".
