Jesus did not speak a word of English and Darwin did not speak a word of Hebrew or Aramaic.

Kinda would've made a conversation difficult.

If the origin of species had come out in paperback in the first centurey how would jesus have responded? What would he have told his followers.

I imagine him being like a magician whose secret is being guessed at. Changing the subject, playing coy, or returning the question. The journey in the quest for knowledge isn't the same if someone gives away the answers.

The "he" being Jesus I assume.- addressing his followers about this new Darwin guy.

Probably.

If one of his followers asked him if this new evolution thing gains traction- gets proven by evidence- and ends up being taught in schools- what do we do then ?

His answer would be to repeat his own words about "rendering unto Ceasar".

Which ( as you said) would seem to be a cryptic and coy response of uncertain meaning.

But 2000 years later the meaning ( or A meaning) would become manifest when the Kansas board of education tried to ban the teaching of evolution in that state.

Even Fundies of the present day would realize that if studying the everchanging theories of science is needed for your children (and your nation) to suceed in the realm of Ceasar then thats what to do. And that It doesnt have anything to do with the unchanging truths contained within the myth of Genisis. The two tales of origin exist on two different plains and address two different aspects of the human experience. The measure wouldve been voted down even faster than it was with fundies taking the lead in opposing the teaching of YECism.
