Well yes if you applied trillions of degrees of heat to the million ton asteroid you would totally destroy the matter and it would not have any structure left so it would end up collapsing in on itself and form a black hole .

Remember the heat of the Sun is 40,000 times more intense at a distance of 600,000 miles and the solar panels will further concentrate the heat of the Sun .

You've just proven that you know nothing of thermodynamics or chemistry. It would certainly change phases, from a solid into an ionized gas, but destroying the asteroid and "destroying the matter" are two entirely different things.

Who is the facepalm for? Seriously, if one imparts a million degrees of temperature to a bit of matter what they are going to do is vaporize it. Even if you were to strip the atoms down to their nuclei, you'd not have a singularity. A singularity needs about ten solar masses to hold together.

I assume the facepalm is for androbot2084 given his showing a lack of understanding of the dangers of fission power as well as a lack of understanding how it is actually just a matter of economies of scale with chemical launch systems to get things into space and thus the ease of assembling a NPP interplanetary spaceship.

Cool. Hey, I wonder how many quotations it will take until the facepalm is no longer a facepalm due to word wrap and the decreasing width of the inner quadrilaterals of quotation.

Well done 'Keet, it appears that Androbot does not know much physics at all. One minor correction though, it's not that a singularity needs to be ten solar masses to hold together, it's that more that a star needs to exceed ten solar masses in order for it's gravity to be large enough to overcome the degeneracy pressure, and thus collapse to a black hole at the end of it's lifetime. The rest of what you're saying is correct.

Huh, so 10 solar masses is the amount of mass necessary for the surface acceleration across it's decreasing surface area (after a star has cooled enough to reach a certain density) to be greater than the increase in pressure due to decreasing volume?

Let me guess, you're going to say that you can make one by focusing a graviton stream using magnetic fields, a can of peas, a neutrino field, and Data's knee?

Credible but not infallible. See -The Black Hole War- by Leonard Susskind. Hawking claimed that information in a black hold can be lost forever. Susskind later showed that Hawking was wrong and Hawking admitted the same.

Are you familiar with Pauli's Exclusion Principle (the principle in quantum mechanics that says that two electrons of the same spin cannot occupy the same orbital in an atom)? Well the point is that when a light star, for example sun, burns up it's nuclear fuel, it's normal gas pressure will no be there to stop it from collapsing under it's own gravity. However, it's actually Pauli's Exclusion Principle that stops it from collapsing completely. You see, this tendency of electrons to not want to be in the same orbital with other electrons of the same spin actually behaves like a repulsive "force" in a sense (and no it's not an electrostatic force as that would be too weak). So, the net result of this is that the star will only collapse to a point where this repulsive "force" between every electron in every single atom in the star will exert an outward pressure that alone is enough to oppose the inward pull of gravity. This outward pressure is called the degeneracy pressure and the stellar remnant that results is a white dwarf. The star has to of originally exceeded a certain mass limit for the inward pull of gravity to be strong enough to overcome this degeneracy pressure. Heavier stars may that are massive enough to overcome the degeneracy pressure of the electrons but do not exceed 10 solar masses would become neutron stars and are prevented from collapsing further due to the degeneracy pressure of neutrons (neutrons also obey Pauli's exclusion principle since it applies to all fermions).

I hope my explanation wasn't too long. :)
