If you're like the politicians in Los Angeles who've banned throwing footballs on beaches and are trying to actively enforce it? I'm afraid to say that that kind of logic actually does have traction for the 'intellectual elite'. They're unfortunately utopians and demanding a perfect world doesn't seem like its too far out of the question from their perspective.

Marijuana was associated with Mexican migrant workers and then also interracial relationships in the southeast US. Hence it was banned also by cultural association.

lol you'd be surprised.......but apparently in some states it was thought marijuana caused black people created 'evil', 'satanic' blues and Jazz music to seduce white females with. I forget where I found that and will have to look it up again, but yes that sort of thing does play a role.

Do you know why the first cocaine prohibition laws were passed? It was believed that cocaine would cause Negro men to lust after and ravish white women.

Not a valid argument in my opinion. Rape and murder are quite common aswell. So is pretty much all other crime....

But I agree to some extent that Cannabis should be legalised, although it's not something I'd particularly like to partake in using. But it should just be the responsibility of large pharmaceutical companies to manufacture it it a safe way so people will know exactly what they would be getting, instead of it being cultivated in someone's basement or something, with all sorts of crap added in to bulk it up etc. So maybe cultivating it and selling it yourself should be illegal, but if it's produced responsibly and carefully monitored out in the open then I wouldn't see the problem with that.

ugh, I'd rather not have big pharma in control of my buds. They would jack the price up and all that would do is maintain the black market. If it were legal, I would much rather grow it myself from seedling to full bloom, monitoring every step of the process and ensuring absolute quality

I live in an area (Humboldt County, California) where pot is a huge part of the economy but is almost entirely underground. On the one hand, legalizing pot would decrease the price and negatively impact the economy; on the other hand, taking the illegal aspect out would decrease violent crime and the growers attracted to the area would be more stable people. Also, we could tax the hell out of it, maybe get it out of the National and State Parks and onto farms.

I'd like to see pot decriminalized but heavily regulated and kept away from children and teens, along the lines of how we currently treat cigarettes and alcohol. There should be legal blood limits over which one cannot drive, etc.

I lived in Humboldt for a little bit.
Legal weed would decimate the Humboldt county economy. The only reason so much is grown there is because it's fairly remote.
But maybe that's a good thing because a lot of those black market growers just go and spend their money on speed & heroin.
Not all of them, but a lot of them. There are some real scumbags there growing weed. I for one would love to see them put out of business.

Then maybe that county can clean itself up and start a better economy based on tourism.

and another point to those talking about "taxing the hell out of it"...
If the taxes are too high, then the black market will remain.
Because of excessive taxes on tobacco in NYC, there is a huge cigarette black market there.

I'd say tax it, but not so much as to drive the business underground.
One of the main arguments for legalizing weed would be to get rid of the black market.

NO NO NO!, the pharmacutical companies better not taint the cannabis....It should be legal, and legal for an individual to grow some if they want. You really think the pharmaceutical companies are about safety? They just want money, they want people to buy their drugs regardless of all the nasty side effects many of them have......hopefully become dependent on them ect. So in short I would not trust them with marijuana, if it's legal I want to grow my own damn plant so I know that it is just marijuana.

I do not think growing for yourself should be illegal.

There is a petition in missouri (which will be due in may or so) for getting a bill on the ballot about legalizing pot. Part of what it says is someone has a need for it (diagnosed with something and pot is the approved treatment) they can grow up to a 10 by 10 foot amount of pot. The square footage they are allowed to grow I think has to be approved too

I agree with you about the pharmacies monitoring. Also monitoring how often you buy it, like prescription meds so you don't end up getting yourself in a mess addicted.
Though my comparison was a bit lame, taking drugs is only really harmful to yourself, rape and murder harms others so it makes more sense for that to be prosecuted.

Who's to say they would put the price up? And maybe you would take extra care to ensure the highest quality cannabis, but not everyone would. I really don't think most dealers give a crap about quality really, just money, and they can charge whatever they want as it's all freelance.

so true,

not to mentionm that if its legal and the restrictions on amount are realistic then there is no reason at all to cut it up,for one that in itself is extremely rare in europe anyway, never had it happen. secondly i am having troulbe seeing how one could find a material that would even be usable to cut it up since anything that might be tasteless or taste good is worth something, spices tobacco and the like, all more expensive than the weed is in production costs, anything else would probably taste so grim no one would be able to mistake it for good bud.

Your views on pharmaceutical companies seem paranoid and a little deluded. All that you said about the pharmaceutical companies should actually have been aimed at the street dealers etc. Especially the part where you mentioned them not caring about the side effects, just wanting to make money, and trying to get people addicted so they keep coming back for more. That's a highly accurate description of the dealers operating right now! Do you honestly think your average drug dealer cares about the customers wellbeing?? It just seems to me that you want to fight "da man" without actually thinking of what anyone's intentions are. It's a very biased and naive view.

Your attempt at a description of the pharmaceutical companies is actually a very accurate description of current drug dealers.

I have always always been curious as to what the stuff's like, but it's too risky in case I get caught and stuff. So legalise it then curious folk like me won't get branded as criminals from hell. Image

I'd never smoke the stuff, but I wouldn't say no to a pot cake or something, just as a one off to see what it's like.
