according to the above link, in 2004 in New York there were over 800 violent crimes per 100 000 alone.

Thats the sort of spike I am referring to.

In addition to what aghogday says, the UK figures include assaults (i.e. making people think they are going to face violence) whereas most of the countries only include battery (hitting someone).

i think it more helpful to talk in terms of fatalities rather than violence in general.

There is no evidence whatsoever that gun legality prevents more deaths than it causes. The 'Ultimate deterrence' argument is cock and bull. If guns are harder to obtain, you are less likely to be shot by one. Considering most civilised countries have no equivalent gun culture, i feel the burden of proof is on the pro gun lobby.
