What did Irish and Italians used to be before they were white?
Irish and Italian. They just weren't considered white.
I'm black Irish.
I guess because the idea of white is always exclusionary. I also consider it idiotic, but as we know some people just can't feel good unless they can look down on someone else.

Not sure what you're getting at here.
But this is the point where someone should post that scene from the movie "the Commitments"- the saga of working class Dublin Irish guys, and girls, trying to form a rock band that does American soul.
The scene starts with them studying the moves of Jame Brown on video, and the terrified lead singer mutters "arent we a little WHITE to be trying that?"
The manager leaps to his feet and announces " Doncha SEE? We Irish are the Blacks of Europe! And we southsiders of Dublin are the Blacks of Ireland! So say it LOUD, say it PROUD. Im Black and Im Proud!"
And all the members- the freckled faced red haired guy, and the blue eyed blonde girl, all solemnly chant in unison "Im BLACK, and I'm PROUD."
Except in their thick dialect it sounds more like "Im BLEHK, and I'm PRUDE!"

I'm black Irish.
If they were Catholic, it must be remembered at the time, to be truly white American was to also be a white Protestant.

As I understand it, the Protestant Irish were considered the "good" Irish. It was the later Irish Catholics who were of questionable whiteness.
The "Black Irish," as I understand it, were called as such to contrast with the fair colored people. The darker haired Irish were possibly the descendants of prehistoric immigrants from Spain, who had then expanded up the Atlantic coast and migrated to the British Isles. The fair colored Irish were possibly the descendants of Indo-European colonists who had arrived in the Neolithic and Bronze Age from the east. Even today, fair and dark colored peoples characterize the populations of various European countries, depending on geographic location. Like, south and western Germans are often dark haired and deeply ruddy, compared to the fairer, blond northerners and easterners. Or how north Italians are often fairer than south Italians, especially Sicilians, who can often pass as Middle Easterners.

Jesus was as White as the Easter Bunny that replaced him. Ishtar who came to Earth in an egg took back her festival of Spring.
White is not about skin, Irish and Italian were not considered human. The Pope's Minions, transferred from their local jails, to a ship, then released in America.
People do not turn white by moving north, all people are not of the same line, no matter what the Bible says.
For most, the Paloelithic life of living naked, always on the move, using sticks, rocks, fire, to survive, lasted till after the last ice age, and in some places in the Pacific, a hundred years ago.
There was also a Mesolithic culture, reaching from Europe to China, starting 40,000 years ago. They are the ancestors of Europe and China. Those are the ones with Neanderthal DNA.
The rest got a sudden boost out of the Paleolithic 8,000 years ago, when rising sea levels, 450 foot, and the great drying that formed the Sahara, put the two in contact in Sumner. There "The Black Haired People", learned to grow grain, and over thousands of years, quit killing each other, as much, and even wear clothes. They became the Semites.
While they did get some of the blood of the Elder Gods, "The Sons of god looked upon the daughters of man, and found they were fair." those sons were sled drivers, and not of the better lines. Trusted, educated, they three times killed all the gods and took over, now they were the gods, until another killed them, then they were god, till the old gods were begged to return, and killed again a hundred years later, then again, till the gods abandoned them, to live by the sweat of their brow. Their women would bring forth children in sorrow and suffering. In Sumner, only women were allowed to make and sell beer.
Cast from the garden they blamed the women, for listening to the serpent, who told her to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. They returned to the wilderness of the Paleolithic, for 5,000 years.
The same happened in China, where the First Emperor was a blond woman from the west, Chin Li, who taught all of the arts of civilization, growing grain, weaving cloth, making pottery, working metal, raising animals. 8,000 years ago, on the upper Yellow River.
Chinese history say, "We cut off the root, and kept the top." The Han Chinese, with Neanderthal DNA, spread down the river to the sea, and there the first ruler was The Yellow Emperor.
Going into India, The Lord of Animals says, "Do not pollute the blood" No Neanderthal DNA there.
The younger races have hardly started their first time around the circle of the Pole Star, the oldest are well into their second circle.
Since the younger races have been coming up, has been an age of constant war, fire, blood, as a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
I expect it will settle down in another twenty thousand years.
Unless someone teaches chimps to use machetes.

Very few people over the age of two in Ireland are blonde, most are blonde as babies but in the same way as you would look around a middle eastern classroom and see all black hair, in an Irish classroom 90% have exactly the same shade of mid brown hair, a few red and black and blonde but they are hugely outnumbered. Same with the rarity of brown eyes or tanned skin. I have brown eyes, called Devil's eyes or Spanish eyes, I was told it comes from the Spanish/English wars where Spanish sailors shipwrecked off the Irish coast were hidden from the English by the Irish, and ended up in the gene pool. The Irish do look a little different from the old native English, paler skin and far fewer blondes. The difference is more pronounced further west and north, less so in the mixing pot of Dublin.
So the Irish weren't considered white because we aren't also Anglo Saxon Protestants?
I would love to be darker, have skin that was tanned instead of going red and wrinkly, but the fact is that the Irish are painfully white whether we like it or not!

Yep, that was the consensuses in early America.
And while I have no doubt that Spanish sailors given sanctuary by the Irish added some flavor to the gene pool, I doubt that they had been numerous enough to have changed the ethnicity of Ireland. The much more numerous descendants of immigrants from Spain in modern day Ireland had arrived much earlier - say in the Stone Age.

I always got bar work wherever I went when I was younger, seemed to be an asset for a bar to have Irish staff for some reason. I also grow my own potatoes, but I certainly don't live on them, they just grow incredibly well despite the neglect, everything else I tried gets eaten by slugs.
I like the 8 inch high elf santa idea, that actually makes so much more sense with regards to chimneys and flying.
^^^^Both my kids had the ultra blonde hair when little, the term is"tow headed" here.My daughter stayed blonde but my sons hair turned the exact color of mid brown you are describing.I see that color of hair all the time on Irish films. He has green eyes.My coloring is like Cillian Murphy's but with more color in the skin.
I grow taters also, everyone here says to plant them on St.Patricks day.The Irish Cobbler is a great variety.

That's my coloring too, Miss Lizard. My dad had blonde hair as a kid, he's Eastern European. My mom is Irish, German, Scottish, English, and she was cotton headed and it got really dark. I had golden blond hair and now it's medium brown and highlights easily. We all have green eyes, the color of kiwis.
