Even if Russia is in decline, Putin isn't going to put his dreams of a Russian rebirth on hold anytime soon.
I readily admit, I am not up on how China is a threat to NATO. I do know it certainly looks like Putin is directing Trump to break up the alliance, which would open the door to military expansion into former Soviet Republics and satellite states.

Everybody worried about Putin, no one worried about the man who has greatly consolidated power and has a stated goal of reunifying all of China: Xi Jinping.

Perhaps it's because we economically depend on China and not Russia.

Let's look at military spending for example.

The USA spends over $600bn as part of its strategy to be able to fight two existential wars at once.

China's spend is harder to estimate but is around $200bn. This is comfortably second place.

Russia spends around $65bn which puts it fourth behind Saudi Arabia. But it isn't very far ahead of France, the UK, and Germany, or India, Japan, and South Korea for that matter.

Hypothetically, if Russia tried to invade Europe then it would have to fight against three armies each with 65-85% of its funding, plus Italy is sizeable and other countries would chip in. Europe could see the Russians off without American help. It would be a terrible war, but most of the time Europe would win comfortably. But if Russia allowed China to invade Europe, then I think the Chinese would "win" about 50% of the time unless the Europeans had help from their allies.

If you look at the economic importance of the countries then it is similar. Geopolitically, Russia has historically been a poor ally, but China is a very useful one and is earning a lot of favour with emerging economies through its generous trade policies. And of course China shares Russia's imperialist, expansionist ambitions, autocratic ruling style, and persecution of religious minorities and political dissidents.

I should be clear that I don't actually see China "overthrowing" NATO or anything like that. But I do see China expanding its influence throughout Asia and Africa and even Eastern Europe, and eventually becoming a more important geopolitical power than at least the US, if not NATO and its allies.

Nuclear weapons makes the point moot anyways. The Soviet Union strongly considered invading China in the 1970s. At the time they had several thousand nuclear weapons. Soviet leaders declined to do so because they calculated that China's 30 inferior nuclear weapons at the time would cause "an unacceptable amount of damage."
