Neither did I.

In my more generous moments I think the EU became a symbolic scapegoat for any and every dissatisfaction and grievance one could wish to pin on it, and hope this could all lead to future governments being forced to address real problems in the wider country beyond the Home Counties.

I’m my more cynical moments I think it’s freed the British Establishment from any external limits and oversights so they can take back control of the rest of us.

Sadly a lot of people fell for the myth that we were a subjugated people being trampled underfoot by the EU .

In reality the greatest threat to most people is a Tory party woefully short of morals and scruples . Subjugation by the Tories is far more likely than subjugation by the EU ever was .

The Tories can be removed, the EU can't. The EU says its building an empire and wants control of our army and foreign policy. I agree that the traitors are in our own country but we need to be able to remove them. Please stop pretending the establishment wanted us to leave.

I've placed a $50 bet at 3 to 1 odds that a year from now, the clamour will involve much "wailing and gnashing of teeth".  Maybe a few garments will be rent as well...
Have you decided what to spend your winnings on yet?
Lottery tickets, of course!

Of course... silly question.

Aye: regardless of whether any given individual was in favour of the project beforehand, they’ll do everything they can to make sure their wealth & power is protected to be passed on to their children.

In most cases probably innocently unconcerned as to any negative consequences for the rest of us, and indignant if their attention is drawn to such issues.

Which is arguably why the EU has been so effective at expansion. Effective change usually comes in gradual steps, rather than in the form of quick revolution. The term 'salami slicing' springs to mind.
