I remember when conservative parents in my school district tried to 'cancel' the Harry Potter books from the library because they were 'unchristian'.

Oh good Lawd. The actress you are trying to covertly support in your post is Gina Carano lead actress in Disney's the Mandalorian.

Carano tweeted support to the MAGA rioters in Capitol riots and then proceeded to claim that MAGA rioters were being treated like Jews and she posted a now deleted tweet with an distasteful image of a woman in a concentration camp.

She was removed from Disney because
1. She has past history of being transphobic
2. She has past history of being anti-mask
3. shared an anti-Semitic image in order to lend support to criminals rioting in the capitol building

Disney were well within their rights to terminate her as she's a poor role model for children who idolise Star wars characters,. I hope they remove her line children's toys as well.

What exactly is cancel culture? Best as I can tell, it's an environment where blacklisting people because of their beliefs becomes a normal, everyday, acceptable, out-in-the-open procedure.

A culture of accepted and acknowledged blacklisting.

Is this an accurate description?

That would seem to be an appropriate way to describe it...

Oh good Lawd. The actress you are trying to covertly support in your post is Gina Carano lead actress in Disney's the Mandalorian.

Carano tweeted support to the MAGA rioters in Capitol riots

Actually, a minor correction based on my understaning of the terminology as used in the media last year, it was:
"mostly peaceful protesters" at a "mostly peaceful protest" in the Capitol...
cyberdad wrote:

Interesting misrepresentation... She tweeted about how dehumanising a group (as an example, lumping anyone right-wing\conservative\etc. under a given title (let's say, MAGA), then proceeding to encourage hatred and endorsing the use of vitriolic statements about them as a collective group) can lead to violence against them, and where that (in a worst case) can lead to.

I'll hide the words of her tweet for the "sensitive" among us:
Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children

Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?

You may even notice there was no mention of MAGA ("rioters"\"peaceful protesters" or otherwise) in her post... It is interesting that this group comes to mind with some people, and leads to the obvious question as to what information\motivation could have led them to jump to the assumption she was referring to a specific group, rather a generalised comment aimed at trying to unify people and stop the divisive attacks by either side on the other.

You mean this is "Transphobic"?

So has Dr. Fauci, but people still listen to him:
Quote:
"There's no reason to be walking around with a mask," Fauci told CBSNews’ 60 Minutes in a March 8 interview with chief medical correspondent for CBS News Dr. Jon LaPook.

“When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is. And, often, there are unintended consequences — people keep fiddling with the mask and they keep touching their face,” said Fauci at that time.

cyberdad wrote:

Any source\reference to substantiate this? I like to have factual references, not being expected to take a person's word, and couldn't find any copies of\reference to what she supposedly posted...Without that, it's just an unsubstantiated claim.
cyberdad wrote:

I suppose it depends what sort of role model you think Disney should\do have otherwise...

How about:
Quote:
Disgraced Vice President of Walt Disney Convicted of Child Rape, Gets 6 Years By Matt Agorist for The Free Thought Project

The disgraced top executive at Disney has been convicted and sentenced to nearly seven years in prison on multiple counts of sexually abusing children.

Or how about:
Quote:
Both Brian Peck and Victor Salva were convicted of several sex crimes against children—yet went on, after their convictions, to enjoy lucrative careers within Disney’s corporation. Peck, who starred in X-Men and in all three Living Dead films, served 16 months in prison and he still works with children on Disney film projects.

Or:
Quote:
Also, as TFTP reported in 2017, Jon Heely, 58, Disney’s director of music publishing, was charged with three counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child. The abuse started nearly a decade ago with the first reported victim claiming that Heely abused her when she was 15 years old, and the second victim claiming that Heely abused her from the time she was 11 years old, until she was 15, according to a report from Variety.

If you want, I can probably find a list of the numerous employees of their parks arrest on C.P. (or related) charges as well...

Interesting what you consider a "bad" role model for this company to be...

Disney are a private company and perfectly entitled to terminate her contract if her conduct tarnishes their brand. I am sure Carano knows the terms of her work contract otherwise she would be swiftly making a wrongful dismissal case against her former employer. Especially since DIsney were originally planning to create a whole new series based on her character "Cara Dune".

Nobody except MAGA sympathisers are shedding any tears for Carano as her social media posts were described as abhorrent

Honestly its a no-brainer decision and has nothing to do with cancel culture as you would have us believe.

Cancel Culture and purely business decisions to fire people not wholly separate things. Cancel Culture has expanded and changed what opinions publically expressed by employees will hurt the bottom line.

Just because one didn’t want to vote for Trump....doesn’t make that someone a leftist.

Biden is no leftist. He’s more a pragmatist. He’s a politician who wanted to stop the BS.

82 million people got sick of the BS—doesn’t make them leftists.

Rather, it makes them folks who wanted to take back the country from the MAGA contingent. Some of them are quite conservative.

In WW2 Socialism was a threat to France. In fact France fell to an invading socialist power.

France fell to an invading NAZI army whose government that didn’t have much to do with socialist principles, despite its name.

France had a president who was the leader of the SOCIALIST party.

I’m not a socialist—but democratic socialism is much preferable to a Big Brother regime.

So the Nazi's had socialist in their name but weren't socialists? How so?
Well, on second thought, names are kinda just for marketing purposes. The Democrat party is not democratic so......

The Daily Mail is a rag largely specialising in "celebrity" tittle-tattle and light "phoaaar, nudge-nudge" tit-n-bum porn, and I don't think it should be trusted any further than it can be thrown. It appears to be devoid of any meaningful editorial control, and that particular article is a not-very-well-disguised attack on "prominent intellectuals, and academics", "collection of intellectuals" and so on: red meat to the right, blue-rinse pearl clutching audience the Mail panders to.

For other idiotic nonsense it promotes, see: https://kill-or-cure.herokuapp.com/

Judging by the content and the timing of your response, you clearly didn’t read the article before posting this. I doubt you even read Brictoria’s opening post. The article is not really about any sort of socialism at all, more about modern American-style leftist identity politics.

cyberdad wrote:

You clearly didn’t read the article before posting this either.

The story is from the Daily Mail, one of Britain's more right-wing papers. They supported the Nazis prior to WW2, for example. Famously successful for "giving people their daily dose of hate".

Does the tabloid article state what, if anything, links this group of academic spokespeople together? Membership of any particular club, society, group, party, think-tank etc. etc.?

Well I have read the article, after which I spent a few minutes googling some of the people quoted.
The article starts by quoting warnings by the following French politicians about the influence of developments in American social science:

President Emmanuel Macron of the centre-liberal LREM party
Education Secretary Jean-Michel Blanquer of the centre-liberal LREM party

Academics quoted warning about developments in American social science include:

Pierre-André Taguieff - a “philosopher who has specialised in the study of racism and antisemitism”
Gerard Noiriel – a social historian, former member of the Communist Party, with a history of Marcist-influenced activism.
Stéphane Beaud – a sociologist whose work has mainly focused on the working class

I don’t know about you, but these people don’t sound “far right” to me. So I think your comments about the Daily Mail’s pre-WW2 activities are pretty irrelevant.

Modern American culture is vastly influential throughout the West. This isn’t even controversial. And nobody’s claiming it only affects France. The article was merely focusing on a specific reaction to modern Americanism that has taken place in France.

As for space lasers … well, we have these things called television and the internet that help American cultural influences rapidly spread to other countries. This isn’t the 1800s anymore.

Maybe you should stop and think about what you’re saying before directing such overblown sarcasm at others.
