Capitalism Does Not Drive Innovation
Yup. I'm pretty sure humanity is screwed no matter what ideology we embrace.
The problem I think is revolutions tend to lead to dictatorships. This is where I have issues with Marxist-Leninism. It's not 100% unique to communism though. The French Revolution lead to chaos, and then ended with Napoleon, who was not a communist. When you pull a system out by its roots it causes disruption and chaos, and people are willing to allow an authoritarian leader to take charge because they will choose stability over freedom if freedom means anarchy. People in the modern first world are just so far removed that they have no idea how awful things can get when government is just gone.
"If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck."
So...
If it acts like a Socialist, if it talks like a Socialist, and if it demands its "fair share" of your paycheck like a Socialist, then it probably is a Socialist.
Taxing the very wealthy is not socialism. FDR wasn't a socialist. You're helping the right when you call taxes socialism.
The issue is who are the very wealthy defined as? All to often socialists think the very wealthy is anyone who gets paid more than minimum wage.
Are there any self-avowed Socialists who have patented something useful?
(Something other than just one more method of taking money from the wealthy and giving it to the poor, of course.)
How many patents have been granted to Capitalists?

Well, Einstein wrote an article titled "Why Socialism," so I'd imagine it's a pretty good indication of his political leanings.
You can judge for yourself if he ever did anything useful.

That would make for one interesting mountain of documents to hand in to the patent office.
Socialists rarely innovate. Every socialist I meet seems to think everyone who makes over average salary does so unfairly and dishonestly and needs to be punished for it via punitive amounts of tax. They just see the end of year final salary others make and assume nothing more. They fail to realise that the person making £70k a year might have worked an extra 40 hours of overtime every week on top of their basic 38 hours.
......they want to heavily tax that overtime. They fail to realise the person making 80k a year might be removing asbestos all day every day and he/she gets paid a lot of danger money.......they want to heavily tax that danger money.
They rarely see the bigger picture and assume everyone works basic hours and in safe cushy jobs just like the typical socialists I see work. Trying to drill the fact that many working class folk make a lot of money in a year via overtime into my socialist friends head was like drilling into tungsten. She just wasn't able to comprehend that people work more than 50 hours a week and got paid for each of those hours and she always assumed they got paid more because they were men.

Google tells me he had at least 50 patents. I'd link it, but I'm on mobile.

There seem to be a lit of self-serving claims about what socialism supposedly is, and how socialists supposedly are.
It's cool that you think socialists consider anyone making more than minimum wage to be "rich" - even though socialists are also the ones fighting to raise the minimum wage, so how does that make sense - but far be it from me to drag logic into narnia - meanwhile I hear the word "billionaires" a lot. Last I checked, 80K is a long way from a billion.
Not only that, but lets do some math. Ignoring taxes completely, someone working 40 hrs a week, at $10/hr, makes $400/week. Times 52 weeks, is $20,800/yr. Taxes would make that lower. NOBODY at a pay rate of 10/hr is making 80k/yr, unless they're working 160 hrs /wk, which is insane, if not lethal. Go ahead, say "but, time and a half!" - in that case they'll ONLY have to work 120 hrs a week. Which is still 50% more than your supposed "up to 80 hours!" or w/e, and still THREE TIMES the load of a full time job. Plus, a 40 hour week is 8 hours a day 5 days a week, 120 hours of work per week would be 8 times 3, which is 24 hours. So in this magical land where people make 10/hr to earn 80K in overtime, they work 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. Sounds reasonable to me!
Oh, and that's with time and a half - at straight hours (cos nobody even pays full time, let alone overtime now) that's 32 hours of work in a 24 hour day, 5 days a week.
Making it SEEM like socialists want to tax people who make 80K "to death" is just a way to make sOcIaLiSm!! ! into the new boogeyman. BILLIONAIRES. BILLIONAIRES. Not Steve Schmidt's Auto salvage making 90K / yr. The hope is that Steve will get spooked into thinking they ARE going to come for him. BOOGIE BOOGIE SCARY!! ! THEYSA COMMIN FOR YOU, STEVE!
BILLIONAIRES. And speaking of, fun fact. Guess what you end up with if you tax the top 40 multi billionaires and take 75% of their total worth? 40 mutli billionaires. And oh how they'd suffer, STILL BEING MULTI BILLIONAIRES. Boo hoo! Think of how hard their underpaid labor force worked to earn all that money for them! Now they can ONLY buy EIGHT superyachts instead of SEVEN!
And I'm not even sorry, I don't care how "hard" you think you "worked", there gets a point where you're just being a greedy POS. That point is in the billions. No I don't "hate all billionaires". But I do dislike the ones that actively fight attempts to pay people fairly so they can keep hoarding wealth they didn't earn.
I'd like to meet these supposed socialists who supposedly want to "tax to death" people who make 80K/yr. Most times I hear "raise taxes" it's also in the same sentence with "billionaires". Not millionaires. BILLIONaires. So where are these supposed socialists who are fretting about people making under 100K?
"They're out there! Trust me! They exist!"
Cool. Anyways...
As far as "what socialists have contributed", and "not inveting anything", you're not going to find evidence of that in patents. Patents are by definition a capitalist invention. A patent is to protect an idea so ONLY YOU can make money off your idea. That's capitalism. A socialist wouldn't do that, that's the opposite. They would do like Volvo, having invented the 3-point seatbelt, INSTEAD of patenting it, they gave it away freely, in order to save lives. The capitalist thing to do would have been patent it, and charge extra for it. So smugly sneering at "how few patents socialists have made" kinda misses the point.
Capitalism does indeed drive innovation. But it innovates things like making disposable products that now have to be repurchased constantly, generating reliable revenue. Like ways to prevent or eliminate competition - the very competition that capitalism supposedly creates, that supposedly drives innovation - is actively fought in capitalism - competition is BAD for capitalism. It's called a "barrier to entry". How to push or keep people out of your gig.
Capitalism doesn't lead to competition - it leads to monopolies. And at that point the winner isn't who made the best product, it's whoever was able to drive everyone else out of business first.
But hey, at least it's fun hearing all these wacky zany strawman socialist stories, of supposed SoCiAlIsTs! who just happen to have all these funny ideas like wanting to tax middle class people more, instead of BILLIONARES.
I've been trying to find the difference between capitalism and feudalism, and other than "I have the money, so you work for me!" instead of "I am the king! (who had the money) so you work for me!" I can't seem to find the difference. Mansions instead of castles. Limos instead of carriages. Bodyguards and lawyers instead of knights and advisors. Trust fund brats marrying other trust fund brats inheriting daddy's fortune and empire, rather than neighboring kingdoms using an arranged marriage to consolidate power and keep it hoarded. Striding around telling people "do this!" or "make that happen!" and puffing about how hard THEY worked, while other people do all the actual labor.
"But, the people NEEDED the king / "job creator"! They couldn't have done it alone!" Ha, no, they didn't need the PERSON, they needed the RESOURCE. And by resource, I don't even mean "money". Land to plant food. Land to live on. Access to water and other resources. The PERSON only had value by controlling the resource. Remove the obstacle of the controller, and with the resource available, yah, the people could do it. I don't need YOU, I just need that river and those deer. But those are "YOUR" river, and "YOUR" deer. As though you MADE that river. Or MADE the deer. WORKED HARD for them, did ja? Or did you just "get lucky" and FIND a river and some deer, and say "MINE NOW!", maybe hire a few goons to defend it, and call yourself "king". Or "CEO".
But turn that around, remove the labor of all the people collectively working on things. The farm ain't gonna farm itself. The food ain't gonna cook itself. The clothes aren't gonna make themselves. Resources like land, water, and materials, exist regardless of people. Resources like labor, the ability to make things, to make new things, to make better things, to fix things, those depend entirely on people. A single person can START a company or a business, but it takes PEOPLE to make them grow into something bigger than one person working "really hard". And when it boils down to it, being more concerned with who "owns" what rather than who is actually doing the essential work, is like the guy who owns the wrench acting like he's more important than the guy who actually knows how to fix the car and does all the repairs. "But it was MY wrench!" I could have used any wrench... "But you used MY wrench! I"M a JOB CREATOR, you should be HAPPY I even LET you do this!"
Despite the rhetoric and malarky that "people don't want to work anymore", maybe it's just that people don't want to work twice as hard for half as much. Maybe now that information is recorded so thoroughly, and is so readily accessible, that we can now see over time how, despite being told that wages make things more expensive, wages barely increase, yet prices still go up, and by some STRANGE COINCIDENCE, so do corporate and executive profits. Almost as if, they COULD pay people more, and COULD lower prices, but then they'd ONLY earn 100 million dollars instead of 150 million dollars per year.
But, y'know, SoCiAlIsTs HATE THE WEALTHY!! ! Which is apparently around 80K, and not a penny more, cos they hate that income level, but not millionaires of billionaires, because I guess SoCiAlIsTs! don't know millionaires and billionaires exist I guess
The idea that "I own the means of production, so everything produced is also mine, even if your labor produced it, but don't worry, I'll give you back enough to survive, I wish I could do better, here's your pittance" sound pretty much like what soviet russia tried to sell as "communism". The only difference being, instead of the governmet owning the businesses, now the businesses own the government.
If a system "doesn't work" because greedy people subvert it, then it's not that it "doesn't work", it's that you're letting it be sabotaged. Russian wrote "socialism!" on the side of the box, but rather than being given everything, and then giving it back fairly, those in power got everything, and just kept it. Know what else that sounds like? The promise of "trickle down economics". Hey, give all the money to the rich! Then it will trickle down their lines of spending to everyone! Then we gave all the money to the rich. They kept it and asked for more. More tax cuts. More bailouts. "Trickle down", huh? Their wealth has skyrocketed. Everyone else's has stagnated and fallen behind. When does the trickle start? Know who rich people give most of their money to? Other rich people. Business to business transactions that spend millions or billions, but still only filter down to the workers as poverty wages. Money stays at the top as much as it can.
It's cool that you think socialists consider anyone making more than minimum wage to be "rich" - even though socialists are also the ones fighting to raise the minimum wage, so how does that make sense - but far be it from me to drag logic into narnia - meanwhile I hear the word "billionaires" a lot. I know a few friends who are open about being staunch socialists. They have been critical of the amount of pay some in working class receive. Not that it's too low...... apparently it's to high and they're being paid to much because of sexism and need to be taxed more.
40 to 50k (UK) a year firmly outs someone into middle class income but isn't uncommon for working class folk if they do the overtime and I don't see why they should be taxed heavily for it.
Unfortunately I've seen too many socialists brand the working class as "wealthy" enough to not alleviate my worries about middle class incomes being heavily taxed too.
How is it fair to get paid company dividends without buying shares in a company too? I noticed those keen on socialism talk almost exclusively about sharing money......but what about sharing losses? Surely if company profit is the sole responsibility of the workers in a socialist society then losses also have to be forked out by the workers too? Seems fair to me that the workers should face the prospect of bankruptcy if the losses are on their head.
Also, the vast majority of patients fail to make money so I don't understand the issues with expecting payment. It costs 4k roughly to file one with a patent attorney.

Your use if the word "apparently" and your glib self-interpretation of their reasoning (because sexism n stuff) makes it seem like you really don't listen to what they say, and just hear what you expect to hear. Kinda like how people don't seem to read the quote they're responding to, and repeat their talking points, even if they've been addressed. For example...
It seems like you didn't read where I wrote:
"Ignoring taxes completely, someone working 40 hrs a week, at $10/hr, makes $400/week. So in this magical land where people make 10/hr to earn 80K in overtime, they work 24 hours a day, 5 days a week."
Have you ever worked a 12 hour work day? How about an 18 hour workday? An 80 hour week? Nobody is making 80K a year on minimum wage only. Unless you actually think people are working 24-32 hours a day, 5-7 days a week. In case its been forgotten, a day only has 24 hours, and people generally need to sleep for at least 6 of them. And then, what, on the weekends you do all the laundry and chores and shopping and things people do to stay alive? Look how hard they work! It's literally beyond belief how hard these theoretical overtime workers work! And boy, I bet they're so glad that they make 80K at the expense of their lives, heath, and any free time at all. They can get a nice house now! They'll never be IN it cos they're at work 32 hours a day, but they'll have one!
It's still weird that these supposed socialists are so obsessed with people who make 80K a year, but don't seem to be bothered with millionaires and billionaires. I DO hear a lot of socialists talk about taxing "the rich" and "the wealthy". But the only people I hear equating "the rich" with "the middle class" are people trying to puff up the SoCiAlIsT BoOgEyMaN!! ! THEYSA COMIN FO YA MONEY, MIDDLE-CLASS STEVE!! ! Don't worry, billionaires, you're safe!
I'd be happy to explain. Especially since you're using words that you don't seem to know what they mean. First of all, if a business is failing, it's failing, and not a good business, and capitalism says it deserves to fail cos it couldn't make it. A failing business has no money, and as such there is none to tax, or to pay, as wages OR as dividends. A failing business can't employ people, so employees DO face risk, it's just a DIFFERENT risk. Unemployment AND loss of income.
Nobody is saying a failing business has to stay open and pay people heaps of money. Everyone thinks their business is their precious little baby, and don't like the idea of their business dying. If you expect employees to work poverty wages just so you can keep your business alive, that's just selfish. Period.
The BIG issue is PROFITABLE businesses with CEOs that make hundreds of millions of dollars a year, yet pay their employees poverty wages. And if you're PROFITABLE, you have PROFITS, and CAN pay dividends and wages. Therefore, there are not "losses" or "risks" to be shared, there are "rewards". So your analogy really doesn't hold water. Or make sense.
It's 4K for a patent SEARCH, not to to "file a patent". It's 4K for a patent SEARCH, cos you're PAYING AN ATTOURNEY to go dig thru the patents and see if one like yours already exists. If you went and did it for yourself, it would be FREE. The actual filing of a patent, JUST filing a patent, is a couple hundred dollars.
That aside, I'm not sure what your point is. If you have to pay for a patent even if there's a risk that it fails, and you don't get your money back, then why is it a problem to pay employees fairly just cos your business might fail. Your risk is losing money. Their risk is losing 40 or 80 or 120 (however many hours people work in your imagination) hours a week of time they COULD be investing in a not-failing company, and spending 80 hours of time doing labor, but not getting paid fairly for that time.

They explicitly said it was because of sexism. They work less than 30 hour weeks and at a push just about hit 30 on a long week for them. I said "apparently" because they're wrong in their assumption they get paid less because they're women........they get paid less because they do less hours. In reality, they get paid more than me per hour.
I worked a month of 88 hour weeks once back in late 2018. Don't take it so literally. There really are people out there doing a lot of hours on low pay and actually making above average salary. If I was to go on minimum wage I would probably make close but a little lower than average salary with the 55 hour weeks I average out on. If you ever worked in a workshop, or god forbid a steelworks, you would be getting to grips with 12 hour days 7 days a week regular as clockwork.
£4000 was full patent costs too including application. It's a little more complex as worldwide searches probably need to be made and I could end up getting myself into all sorts of trouble if no taking their advice, expecially with a world patent. As the saying goes "If you think proper legal advice is expensive, you should see the costs of free advice"
Plaid Cymru, as part of their ingenuous tax strategy wanted tax the living daylights out of the middle class and people making £50k a year or more back in 2005 and they're considered as socialist lite here.
The labour party here put forth a manifesto for property during their last election. In it they were to effectively put freezing orders on all rented houses preventing their sale and no doubt hammer the owners with rental income taxes once they were unable to sell their houses and said "It is paramount that such protections are in place before any broader housing market changes are enacted that could trigger landlords to sell"........in other words, they planned to lock landlords in a room first and then batter them senseless with taxes while they cower in the corner unable to leave. This is the type of mentality I know great deal of socialists want to enact in real life. If they do that with landlords they'll sure as hell do it with business owners or any physical asset that makes money. Very high taxes to sell a business, or even just making selling assets flat out illegal unless in implausible circumstances are met like I mentioned above is the M.O. a lot of socialists have. People who make money in a socialist world are just prisoners who serve the poor.......simple as.
Millionaires and billionaires are irrelevant. Last time a socialist government ran the UK they targeted everyone and anyone who owned a business.

Socialism is antithetical to innovation and invention. America's abundance was created not by public sacrifices to "the common good" (e.g., Socialism), but by the productive genius of free men and women who pursued their own personal interests and the making of their own private fortunes (e.g., Capitalism).
Socialism is a plan of morally sanctioned theft. It is about dividing up what others have created. Consequently, socialist economies do not work; they create poverty instead of wealth. This is unarguable historical fact; and, as we have learned from countless examples throughout history, including now Venezuela, the main difference between capitalism and socialism is this: Capitalism works.

Agreed, I was bricking myself when I read about those "freezing orders" the main opposition party has in mind for rental houses last election. Lock the farmers out of their fields, pick them clean and run off without replanting is what comes to mind when I hear of socialism. Why plan ahead for next years crop when you can cut the tree down now?

When I think of Socialism, I think of how I'm allowed to bring income to my family through SSDI. A hardcore capitalist would cut me off saying "get a job." I can't get a job. I don't trust myself to function normally in the workplace. I fear being seen as a liability as if my family isn't already driven nuts by my sensitivities on a daily bases. I'm also an easy target for workplace discrimination due to my sound allergy disorder. The likelihood of me getting fired increases as I can't handle bullying. I could sue, but workers and consumers don't have the power they used to have anymore. A rich man in bed with politicians has more power to deny my rights than I have power to stand up for myself. Every time I get paid by SSDI, I thank the mighty Tah-Um we don't live in a world where socialism is completely outlawed for now. Some socialism is good while capitalism is unregulated enough that we are staring in the face of Oligarchy.

I can't really think of any capitalist states that leave people like you to fend for themselves. Completely unregulated Capitalism will probably allow that to happen, yes, but there are pretty clear laws to prevent trampling on others and I doubt very much any such scenario of a zero welfare state will ever happen.
What do you mean by sound allergy too? Like sound sensitivity?
