But what if maybe there isn't a reason, that events are simply unfolding, like the contemporary view of biological evolution. It's noted with caution that "contemporary scientific views" have a habit of being replaced by other views, but just as an illustration.
Like the Second World War was caused by the rise of the nazi party, which was caused by the terms of Germany's surrender after the First World War, and the worldwide economic depression of the thirties, and the appearance of somebody with the personal charm of Adolph Hitler.
And each of these things had preceding causes.
A cause isn't necessarily the same as a reason. Things can have causes without necessarily having reasons.
How did I come to be in this body, in these circumstances? Is it just a "how" question, or is there also a "why."
