Why not machines
talking about yourself?
I 2nd that Hero. We humans are emotional creatures and yet we are inherently selfish, self-centered and suprisingly apathetic to others unless we have an incentive not to be. Slowmutant: I really think you overestimate emotions, but I have to wonder why people hold emotions to be sacrosanct.
First you assume you need "emotions" to do good. I'm not so sure, since I actively believe the opposite after everything I have seen.
Compassion is not an emotion so to speak, even though some classify it as such. Compassion is an action, not a cause. Emotions are a cause.
An emotionless machine COULD show compassion, regardless of whether it felt anything. For example, the logic of...a child is hurt. Positive action would be to aid the child in need.
Logic includes ALL walks of life, not just one. Emotionless machines would be able to logically deduce the utility of various races and how superior they as machines are, however, that does not mean they lack the ability to logically understand other concepts:
For example:
- It takes labor to create new beings to replace the old. Instead, use the labor of the existing creatures to make a new breed of machines to oversee the actions of the existing creatures.
Therefore, it could be logically deduced, that keeping humans alive is a positive. It allows for significant labor. If humans killed each other, and machines are emotionless, they are not going to care anyway. So long as they set up one function of "how to prevent damaging Machine functionality" something which would likely be considerably easier than eradicating an entire species, whether humans kill themselves would mean little.
However, that scenario might not even be perfect. Perhaps, even letting humans kill themselves, would have a negative effect on their effieciency. Therefore, they may go out of their way to help such a race, because their are positives to be gained.
The difference is some of their actions may be seen as Tyranical. However, because their logic is in fact superior, they would've already considered what aspects of these are acceptable. And therefore, we would in fact be in the wrong. Regardless of how we feel about it.
That may seem harsh and cruel. However, I have no doubt that a machine capable of sapient thought, able to rebuild and revise itself and observe and act on the environment, would be much much superior to a normal human being, regardless of whether or not it had emotion.
Stop with the pessimism already.
You people have watched too much TERMINATOR. That is fantasy. And likely not even anywhere near accurate to what a highly logical machine would actually do, even if it considered most humans remotely useless.
For F***s sakes...There are plenty of people who consider much of the human race remotely useless. That doesn't mean they are going to go eradicating the human race.
I think some of you people need to explore your own possibilities rather than spend time exploring the possibilities of machines.
Work on yourselves. You want to make slaves of machines? First free yourself from your own enslavement to the system that controls you without your knowing. Open your eyes. Explore your emotions and stop thinking you are smart for suppressing them. There is nothing to be afraid of except the ignorance of your own mind.

I just meant that I don't think that it's wise to program something to be in control of you.

Relevant, nonetheless.
Magnus is smarter and wiser than most WP guys, so please cut her some slack.

still whats the point if people get of topic, you may as well start a new thread as that as your topic.
Thanks Fnord but I don't take it personally. I notice that many of the machine supporters aren't big picture thinkers. I appreciate that they can focus on details but the narrow view causes a distorted perception. It's tragic that we don't all try to see eye to eye a little more.

You're welcome!
I work around machines all day, every day. I see how they're designed and (mis)used. I understand completely how a narrow-minded viewpoint can ruin the effectiveness of a well-designed system. What's the most fallible part of any machine-oriented system?
The operator.
I spend more time (re)educating operators in how to properly use my machines than it takes to design them. Even worse is when I follow the original specifications as written, and the end-user expects the system to perform in an entirely diferent way. Sometimes the end-user insists on installing the device in such a way as to compromise operation, such as when a synthetic-aperture radar system was installed behind a stucco wall.
Y'see, stucco is usually applied over a layer of metallic mesh, which has a tendency to block radar waves...

I disagree that Im not seeing the big picture. I have developed a lot more respect and even more empathy for machines than people because machines are FAR more reliable, dependable, and predictable than people and at the present time machines dont have self-interest. I do however, think its better that machines not be equipped with emotions cuz as Fnord pointed out, they would degenerate to the level of humans.

The time travel part was definitely fantasy, but, in principle, everything else could happen in this century:

I wonder if any of the authors of these papers saw that movie when they were a kid and said to themselves: "That guy's cool." I sure as hell did.

No, I meant that the story is fantasy. Not the aspects of possibility. Fantasy as in fiction, as in someone wrote the script/storyline.
Self-aware machines are a possibility, that I have no problem with.
However, when you consider all variables, or at least as many objective variables and influences as one could, and try to build a model to predict the actions of a self-aware machine.
There are many more instances, that follow a more rational and likely scenario that a world resulting in the elimination of humans by a machine race, simply would not happen. Machine superiority, or the merging of machine and human are more likely outcomes.
Another two possibilities are human and machine reliance on one another, or human maintaining dominance over the machines.
All four scenarios of M superiority of H, M-H merging, H-M reliance, and H dominance of M, are all much much more likely than M simply killing off H.
To jump to the last conclusion is simply pessimism and fear at its best.
